Election day in the US is quickly approaching...can you believe it's almost November already? In honor of this once-every-four-years occasion, we've created not one but FOUR limited editions colors for October! Whether you're a Republican, Democrat, Independent, or None of the Above, you now have a special Lorna's Laces colorway to express your political persuasion...but more importantly, to make something pretty! For example, one skein of Worsted is enough to make a cozy hat using Kristen's free pattern, Knitted (or Crochet) Hats for the Whole Family!
In the spirit of the election season, we thought it would be fun to run our own mock election. Each skein of the '12 October colors in both Shepherd Sock and Shepherd Worsted that sell will count as a "vote". The color that sells the most in those two weights during the month of October will be declared the winner! We will keep a running tally on our home page until a winner is determined so you can keep a close eye as our mock election progresses. These colors may be party-affiliated, but remember, it is the substance of the color that matters!
**Please note: this mock election is not affiliated with any political party and is not representative of the actual US elections - we're just having some fun! |

Rachel, Gina May, Erika and many of the other gals at the shop had a little too much fun helping unpack our latest arrival from Fyberspates. Let's just say their stashes have grown by more than a few skeins. ;) Why? A glorious box of splendiferous shop ends! You may remember Jeni of Fyberspates from the September LLE newsletter. She is the genius behind the lusciously luxurious Scrumptious yarns.
| Jeni not only offers her Scrumptious line but also a variety of other sumptuous bases she hand dyes herself! We asked her if she would be kind enough to send us all of her shop ends and, of course, being the oh-so nice person she is, she sent us more than enough for us to create some must-have grab bags (trust us, one skein won't be enough). These skeins are first quality leftovers that would love a home in your stash - or even better, on your needles! |
Grouped in seperate color families, there is a choice of Lace (includes 2 skeins), Sock (includes 3 skeins) or Super Surprise (includes 3 skeins of either Sock, DK and/or Worsted).
What could be better than these amazing grab bags? These amazing grab bags on Wool Watcher! Keep your eyes peeled Saturday, Sunday, and Monday on the 6th, 7th and 8th, as this deal gets even better at an unbelievable discount!
Prefer hand picking your hand dyes so you know what you're getting? Not a problem! The other two boxes that arrived with those shop ends contained three incredible sale yarns. Hand dyed to perfection, in a myriad of gorgeous tonal shades, these yarns are exclusive to JBW! We've only got a limited amount in stock, so if you see a color you like, grab it before it disappears. The three yarns are as follows: - Bamboozle Sock, a superwash and merino blend with 437 yards per 100g hank, this yarn practically glows in the tonal colorways.
- Faery Lace, a soft, feather weight merino and nylon blend with 1312 yards per hank - that's the same number as our address!
- Pure Silk 4ply, the perfect yarn indulgence. A light fingering weight, this delicate yarn is simply stunning (and incredibly soft!).

I have challenged myself to introduce six of the new Rowan yarns to you in sixty-six words, so here goes nothing! Yes! 66 on the nose!
And now for the fun part, what you can do with these yarns!
The most popular Rowan collection of the season so far is Purelife Wintertide. Using yarns from Rowan's Purelife British Sheep Breeds line, this booklet contains 16 traditional knits that will become a staple in your winter wardrobe, like the cozy Salthouse Cardigan! Parisian Nights, on the other hand, highlights the fashion forward potential of Rowan yarns including Kidsilk Haze, Anchor Artist Metallic and Fine Lace. These dressy knits are sparkly and stylish - perfect for a night out on the town! I can't leave out my personal fav, Easy Winter Knits. With over 20 sweater and accessory projects, all patterns use the chunky Rowan yarns: Big Wool, Alpaca Chunky and Drift. All designed by the talented Martin Story, these quick knits (like the Sushi Vest or Tala Hat) are perfect for instant-gratification projects or last-minute gifts. Of course there is always more from Rowan, be sure to check out these books as well featuring their new fall yarns!

For those who are a little weary of the politics talk by now and are more looking towards what to wear for Halloween, we've compiled a list of hand knit and sewing costume ideas! The best part? Starting the 1st of November you can absorb these garments directly into your everyday wardrobe!
If you don't have project A.D.D. and your needles are quick (the clock is ticking!), consider becoming the lovely Audrey Hepburn a la Breakfast at Tiffany's for an evening in the Audrey Coat, knit with two strands of Blue Sky Alpacas 100% Alpaca Sportweight yarn. Travel back further in time and pose as Amelia Earheart with the Bomber Jacket from Dovetail Designs. Or grab your tiara and declare yourself Princess for a day in the Evening Empire Dress by Anna Maria Horner! Other larger projects ideas could include the Steampunk-esque Versailles jacket or Churchmouse's Ribbed Pencil Skirt - perfect for being a Librarian or Professor!
Accessories are a necessity for pulling a costume together. Even if you've got your alter ego selected for this coming Halloween, don't forget those finishing touches! For all you flappers out there, check out the 1920s Ribbon Hat and Ryll Headband! Victorian era gals and vaudeville performers, don't miss out on Ysolda's Veyla Mitts and the Crochet Lace Stockings from the Fall 2012 Vogue. Witches and gypsies, the Regia Lace Shawl or Grace Akhrem's Crashing Waves Cowl are both excellent ways to ward of an autumn chill with the magic of lace!
And now for my favorite suggestions, the one-piece-wonders! For all the kids out there, these head-warmers double as awesome costumes: Spud and Chloe's Hoot Hat, Fruit Hats from Ann Norling, and our very own Jeanne's Samurai Warrior Hat (this one can be knit in adult sizes too!). Another adult costume/hat is the Deer With Antlers Hat from Tiny Owl Knits.

Kollage Square Double Pointed Needles $12.60 | Back in June, I was walking the floor at TNNA and stopped by the Kollage booth to say hi and see what was new. Almost immediately a pair of the new and improved Square Circulars found their way into my hands and I was instantaneously sold. Long story short, I ran back to Terry and Leanne, who were also there with me, raving, "Guys, we have to get these!" And here they are! We now have both Square Circulars and 6" Square Double Points. These needles are made 100% in the USA and expertly crafted from high grade aluminum in a bright, titanium color. The square design helps to reduce stress on your hands and also aids in keeping your stitches uniform! | Pashmina Worsted - Magnolia Leaf $26.00 | After months of waiting and just in time for autumn, Madelinetosh's Pashmina Worsted has finally arrived! An unbelievably soft merino, silk and cashmere blend, this yarn is the worsted weight big sis to the classic DK weight Pashmina. With 210 yards per 100g hank, this plush, luxurious yarn is perfect for all sorts of projects from one-skein hats such as Never Not Knitting's Seedling Beret to cozy cardigans (Knitbot's Effortless Cardi would be stunning!) and winter accessories like the Scarf/Hood and Wrist Warmers by Knitting Pure and Simple. Available in 38 of our favorite shades, if you don't see the color you're looking for, just shoot us an email or give us a call and we'll get it ordered for you! | Baby Silkpaca Lace - 809 Solis $10.80 | I'm having a hard time coming up with the words to describe the latest edition to our Malabrigo inventory. The usual "really soft" and "gorgeous hand painted colorways" just doesn't seem to cut it. All the same, here it goes! Silkpaca is an exquisite blend of alpaca and silk. A plied, laceweight yarn, each 50g hank has a hefty 420 yards for just under $11. Use just one skein to make Ysolda's Ishbel shawlette or three to eight hanks for the Featherweight Cardi from Knitbot. Craving more Malabrigo? Keep an eye out, we've got more new yarns on the way! | Wisdom Book 3: Poems Reflections $17.00 | If you aren't already familiar with her, Cornelia Tuttle Hamilton is an amazing designer who has had her hands in the hand knitting industry since the 80s. Her latest book, Wisdom Book 3, features a variety of Wisdom Yarns' self-striping Poems fibers. Of course the colorful yarns are eye-catching in their own right, but Cornelia's designs really take the bands of saturated colors to a whole new level. Some of our favorites include the Wilcox Cardigan knit in Poems Chunky and the Parker Cardigan with its textural combination of Poems Silk and Poems Chunky. | Lantern Moon Suzette Project Bag $16.00 | New from Lantern Moon, the Suzette Project Bags are a great option for housing your latest WIP! These project bags are made from transparent polka dot taffeta, allowing you to easily identify the project within. Featuring a drawstring-style closure in six bright colors, these roomy pouches have a 7 inch square base and are 12 inches tall when open, giving you plenty of space for your project and some of the necessities as well! |

| Allison is one of the veteran Beans here at the shop. A woman of many talents, Allie is in charge of Yarn Logistics, keeping things hyper-organized and making sure our warehouse doesn't turn into one gigantic pile of yarn and fabric. She also happens to be Amanda's (one of our amazing purchasing gals) mom! On top of her mad product-putting-away skills, Allie is an expert on basically everything that has to do with yarn and fiber. An amazing spinner who has been featured in Spin-Off Magazines and other publications, she recently proved that on top of being able to knit anywhere, you can also spin just about anywhere, too! Every day at our morning meeting, she used a drop spindle to spin some Imperial Sliver Roving, all the while cracking jokes and keeping up with the meeting updates - talk about multi-tasking! |
Now that she has completed spinning, she's using the scrumptious yarn to knit a hat, again, just during our morning meetings!
Also the designer behind knittinIt patterns, Allison likes to create timeless designs that can be worn season after season and that aren't too difficult, but also help you grow as a knitter. One of our favorites, and a very relevant pattern for the upcoming elections, are her Head to Head hats. One features donkeys, the other, elephants! You can see her pattern below, along with the roving she used to spin during meetings and some spinning and knitting resources she swears by!
