This is not the first time that I have purchased Cascade Heritage Silk Yarn. Sometimes I find as do many others that the color representations that appear on websites are not always what the color is in real life. This time, I can attest to the fact that the color I ordered was the absolutely perfect color match! |

As I have said in other reviews this is my go to yarn. Since it was super wash I checked on how it reacts to flame. It burns just like untreated wool. One of the biggest reasons I won’t use acrylics or any man made yarn is how it reacts to flame. I could never forgive myself if I made a gift for someone and it caught fire. Matter of fact the military always specifies wool and not a man made fiber for helmet liners. Can you imagine a service member having his liner melt onto his skin if he gets burned. I don’t even want to think about it but my yarn must burn like regular wool. I throw everything I make into the washer and dryer so I can be sure it can be handled that way in anyone’s home. Would it be better if hand blocked. Most people have neither the time or knowledge to hand block a knitted piece. This way I know that it will come out fine. When you add this attribute next to it’s so soft feel it’s a great value. The little bit of added silk makes it so beautiful. |

I was so disappointed in this yarn. The colors are beautiful and very saturated, and the feel is soft and silky. But the dark grey and the purple pilked terribly before I even finished the project. As others have noted, there are white spots which crop up intermittently, but this problem pales in comparison with the pilling. I made a huge Claudia shawl which I intended as a gift, but it looks like I must have already worn it for years! |

I bought the cascade yarn for a top I am knitting, the yarn is a very pretty color and it is very soft. I have gotten some strange thick pieces that are white which leave bulges in my knitting, I probably could cut them out but I am not weaving in tons of ends because of it. I have to say that the thick spots and white spots are strange. They might be expected in hand dyed yarn but this yarn doesn't seem to be hand dyed so I would expect it to be dyed the same color all the way through and that it would be the same thickness all the way through. I mean I've used some red heart in my day and it never has any thick spots or spots that don't have any color. I guess I figure if I pay for better yarn then it should be better. |

This critique is NOT directed at Jimmy Beans but at Cascade. I chose this yarn based on gauge, natural fibers, color options and positive reviews. My project was a blue and white reversible baby jacket that I could knit on my Passap, all stockinette stitch. Machine knitters know that fingering weight, smooth yarns have to be flawless for stockinette stitch.
My order consisted of Navy & White. Thankfully before winding I noticed white inclusions in the Navy skeins and exchanged them for the lighter Storm Blue hoping for the best. I should have been able to finish my project with 2 skeins each, but needed 3 of each color because of unsightly white silk slubs in the Storm Blue and an abundance of delicate dark blue fibers in one skein of the white yarn, some of which I was able to pull out with tweezers. Tired of using magnifying glass and tweezers I washed one badly affected knitted section, but the blue fibers bleed into the white. In my frustration I first used BIZ and then bleach and of course ruined the piece and threw it away. One white skein also had some off-white streaks which had scattered stitches looking a little dirty, but they were not too horrible.
Too late did I discover that the yarn is now produced in China and I have to believe that the many positive reviews have been for this yarn when still produced somewhere else.
In fairness I need to add that the yarn was pleasant to wind, no knots, but after I became aware of the heavier silk slubs I wound it very slowly and found enough sections that I needed to cut out, again a big negative for machine knitting.
The jacket is now finished, but the joy of making it was destroyed and the costs unnecessarily high. I will be mailing one useless hood section with slubs to Jimmy Beans for their review and hope it will trigger a thorough inspection of this quality if all new shipments were produced in China.

Have had to postpone my project, but wound the first FLAWLESS skein: very promising! Smooth and long-staple yarn. Will report again after swatches have been knitted and tested. |
