Sweet Grass Wool Mountain Silk DK Yarn Reviews

Based in Helena, Montana, Sweet Grass Wool uses the premium fleece of Targhee Sheep who are bred to inhabit the high mountains and rugged Eastern plains of Montana. Their fleece is some of the whitest and softest to be found anywhere in the United States! This sumptuous fleece is spun using a turn-of-the-century Spinning Mule in Alberta, Canada. The mill there uses a natural washing process that does not use any chemicals which creates a healthy product that maintains the natural beauty, strength and texture of the fibers.

Hand dyed in gorgeous tonal colorways, Mountain Silk DK is a luxurious blend of Targhee wool and Tussah Silk. Light and lofty, this yarn is truly a treat for your fingers and works up into a warm, deliciously soft fabric.

Disappointing, poor quality, NO redeeming features 2 out of 5 stars (2 out of 5)
When winding the 1st skein, I found 2 knots and 1 thickened place I had to cut out. I knitted for two hours and found another knot I had missed, then in the LAST 15 minutes I found TWO BROKEN STRANDS AND QUIT KNITTING. I AM GOING TO TRY TO SEND THE UNUSED SKEIN BACK.

Left Feeling Ambivalent 3 out of 5 stars (3 out of 5)
This yarn sort of pisses me off. From the colors and descriptions on the internet, as well as the price, you expect a soft, luxurious wool/silk blend. I feel that this yarn is extremely rustic and unfinished which is fine for me as I enjoy that. There's a lot of lanolin left in it, which is also fine for me as it softens as you knit. What makes me sort of angry is that the color is washed out- it looks like someone spilled food coloring on the sheep and tried to scrub it off- making the Straw colorway a dulled orange rather than the vibrant yellow you see in the picture. I think if I had expected a country knit type rustic yarn I would have been much happier with this product. If that's what you're looking for, I recommend it. For more refined, chic knits, go with something like Madelinetosh or Dream in Color and avoid this altogether.

A woolen-spun Targhee & silk blend 5 out of 5 stars (5 out of 5)
Sweet Grass's Mountain Silk DK is a bouncy, luxurious blend of 80% Targhee wool and 20% tussah silk. The Targhee doubles this two-ply yarn's terrific elasticity: woolen-spun yarn is usually very elastic, and Targhee is right up there with down-breed wool for its bounciness and irrepressibility, so there's more bounce here than you'd expect with 20% silk. Although the yarn's a two-ply, I decided to knit socks from it, and I'm so glad I did: wearing them is like being cupped in an attentive masseur's handsâ€â€my feet feel coddled! Available colors are subtle, clear, and beautiful the blend of fibers takes them up differently, so socks have something ranging from a heathered to a faintly, faintly striped but not for long appearance the effect is subtle. The yarn is a pleasure to knit with because it's so sensual. I can see hats, mitts and mittens, perhaps a chunky cowl knit from this.
