Noro's newest batch of yarns is pure joy in color form! First up is Kama, a sumptuous blend of wool, silk, kid mohair and angora, which makes for a winning combination of softness and warmth! Since it's a heavy worsted weight, Kama is perfect for winter sweaters and coats as well as quick small accessory projects. We really love the gorgeous vest in Noro Volume 32, which features a boxy fit, v-neck and cabled collar and front panel. Simply stunning!
Next up on the new Noro list is Kirara. This yummy blend of wool, cotton, silk and angora makes for a sturdy worsted weight yarn -perfect for multi-season cardigans and pullovers. We really love the tunic length sweater in Noro Volume 32 which has textured patterning on the sleeves and in a triangular shape on the front, creating a unique and interesting knit!
Lastly, we have Slouchy Shrug is a beautiful cable knit garment that is fun to wear both out on the town or snuggled up at home by the fire. |

Amoroso $12.50 | If there is one yarn we're all crazy over, it's Malabrigo Lace Superwash! A versatile heavy lace/light fingering weight, this yarn is machine-washable and comes in a huge variety of colors (including new ones that arrived just last week!). The Lace Superwash is a special "test yarn" currently only available at Jimmy Beans. Kristen loves it so much, she designed the Truckee Shawlette pattern to feature it! We love helping customers coordinate colors for the stripes in their own Truckee Shawlettes - the Marte and Aguas combo is my personal favorite! | Sew Red by Laura Zander $22.95 | Most of our knitting customers are familiar with our first Stitch Red book, Knit Red. We had such a positive reaction to the book, and such a fantastic response to last year's decision to carry fabric, that we decided to create a similar volume for our fabric lovers out there. Enter Sew Red! More than 25 of your favorite designers like Kaffe Fassett, Amy Butler, and Denyse Schmidt share not only beautiful patterns, but also their personal tips on keeping fit and fighting heart disease. And each copy will be personally signed by yours truly! The book will be released in February, but if you just can't wait, Sew Red is available now for preorder! | Italian Fringe Bag $8.50 | Felted purses have come a long way from those lumpy, misshapen bags with uneven handles we all made in high school home-ec class. Don't believe me? Just check out some of Noni's creations! The Italian Fringe and Ridge purses are the height of fashion in classic hobo shapes with elegant detailing and sophisticated hardware. The Lipstick and Change bag is the perfect size for those little items you can't go anywhere without, and charming to boot! And best of all, you'll be proud to say, "I knitted AND felted it myself!" For felting, we like using the classic Cascade 220, which comes in just about any color you can imagine, or Lamb's Pride Worsted!
| 08 Olive $12.99 | Many of you have already been entranced by the beauty of all the subtly self-striping yarns out there, but do we have a surprise for you! Knitting Fever's Painted Desert yarn is destined to become a new favorite - constructed of three plies (or strands), each of a different color, this fingering-weight masterpiece softly fades from one shade to the next in exquisite, muted colorways. We think it would be fantastic for the Churchmouse Classics Diagonal Lace Scarf and Wrap!
| Asterope Shawl $7.50 | It's hard not to fall instantly in love with Romi Hill's patterns - her sweet shawlettes are universally flattering and never fail to elicit compliments! And her designs are diverse, from simple stripes in Taygete to an eye-catching lace panel in Asterope. We've been bowled over by her Home Is Where the Heart Is series; each new reveal is more beautiful than the last. Rachel couldn't wait to get the Carson shawl on her needles, and the result was stunning! The newest installment (shawl #3 of 5), Coyote Trail, just came in - happy trails to you! | Medium Walnut Drop Spindle $28.50 | Not only beautiful, but also functional, Wool Tree Drop Spindles have everyone at the shop interested in learning to hand-spin their own yarn! Terry and Allie tell us it's easier than it looks, especially with these handy tools - they're made of premium maple and walnut woods and are perfectly balanced to ensure smooth spinning. With three sizes and two shaft choices, you can customize your selection to fit your needs. And for those of you who live close and would like some help spinning your own yarn, we now offer a hand-spindling class at the shop! |

| US needle sizes can vary in actual metric size depending on the brand. In addition, you can't always assume a pattern lists needles in your country's size scale. The best way to get the right needle size is to use the metric measurement if it's listed in your pattern.
A great example of this discrepancy can be seen in comparing the US size 2 needles that we sell: Addi Turbo US 2 measures 3.0mm, but Clover, Crystal Palace and Knitter's Pride US 2 are all 2.75mm.
|
To make sure you have the right needle size, you need to look at your pattern: do you need a 2.75mm needle or a 3.0mm needle? Addi makes a 2.75mm and some of the others brands make US 2.5 (3mm) needles.
While not all sizes are different, some of the following sizes can differ based on the company that manufactures them:
-US 6 can be 4.0mm or 4.25mm especially if they are older needles or Crystal Palace
-US 17 is 12.0mm but Clover's are 12.75mm
-US 19 is 15.0mm but Crystal Palace's are 15.6mm
If you are having trouble, double-checking your needle size is a good first step. Be aware that the needle gauges made by each company reflect these size differences! Also pay attention to the slipperiness of your needles. Tight knitters might switch to slippery needles to "loosen up", and loose knitters can try less slippery needles to help make their knits a little tighter.

Marilyn's Sanagi Dress | Marilyn fell in love with this stunning multi-functional dress after it made a big splash on Ravelry. Shortly afterwards, we began carrying Olga Buraya-Kefelian's (also known as Olgajazzy) patterns and she knew she had to knit it! We think it turned out wonderful and looks so great on her in the Elsebeth Lavold Hempathy yarn!We love the color too, as not many of us can get away with wearing yellow and look so hip doing it! |
Rachel's Truckee Shawlette | This was Rachel's sample for the Truckee Shawlette Free Pattern. Rachel knit her shawl using 1 skein of Malabrigo Lace Superwash and 1 skein of Malabrigo Baby Silkpaca. She used a US size 3 needle. She loves how long the shawl turned out to be, and wears it around the shop all the time - making all of us want to knit one, too. Get the Free Pattern for the Truckee Shawlette on our Amanda's Deer With Little Antlers Hat | When we received this adorable pattern from Tiny Owl Knits Amanda just knew she had to make it! Not only that, but she finished it just in time to wear to the Reno Santa Pub Crawl so that she could go as Rudolph... We love how her antlers are just slightly floppy for an extra cute look, and the hat is so soft and warm, Rudolph is probably jealous! |
Kristen's Peavine Hat and Cowl Set | This was the sample set for the Peavine Hat and Cowl Set. Kristen designed this hat and cowl, which was inspired by chilly and windy winters in the high desert and is currently coming in quite handy for its soft warmth, as it has been quite cold in our area recently. She used 2 skeins of Tosh Merino DK in Filligree and 2 balls of Debbie Bliss Angel in Teal. Get the Free Pattern for the Peavine Hat and Cowl set on our Lace Superwash (her only impulse yarn buy EVER), Knitter's Pride Dreamz Circular Needles, and Tiny Owl Knits Patterns. (She recently knit herself the Deer with Antlers hat and it turned out SO cute!)
| When she is not helping feed your fiber habit, Amanda spends time with her two horses, Comet and Denver, who keep her busy with all of their horsey antics. She is also a certified Equine Therapist and while she doesn't work in that field any longer, she still finds time to volunteer at a local therapy center. Needless to say, horses are her first love. Last summer, Amanda gave Huck a riding lesson on her horse Comet - which was the perfect photo op! How adorable is this photo? Amanda comes from a family of fiber lovers, as both her mom Allison (Allie) and sister Phoebe have both worked at Jimmy Beans at various times throughout the years. |
Allie is still here and is our resident spinning and weaving enthusiast! What a fun mom and daughter team; we are so lucky to have them both as part of the JBW family!
