The year of the dragon has been a tremendous year for Jimmy Beans Wool and as we continue to grow, we've had the pleasure of watching some of our beans bring precious little ones into the world (three already this year)! Designed by Kathy (one of our jack-of-all-trade employees), this month's Limited Edition color is one of good luck in the year of the dragon! So, without further ado, we present "Dragon Baby."
To honor Kathy's mother-in-law, Eliza, and the birth of Kathy's first baby, we thought it only fitting to name July's Limited Edition color "Dragon Baby." Kathy wanted to create a color to honor her mother-in-law, Eliza, who has recently passed away. Alluding to Eliza's Chinese heritage, this month's color name derives, of course, from the year of the dragon and the ferocity, determination and mystical beauty (hence the jade) of Eliza - and all women everywhere. The year of the Dragon only comes every 12 years and is the only sign in the Zodiac that is a mystical, fairy taleen as a sign of good luck.
Kathy brought together this rich color combination of red, gold, green and black to honor the traditional Chinese colors and their meanings. Reminiscent of Chinese New Year festivals across the world, "Dragon Baby" rings in luck with red, which plays a big part in New Year celebrations across the world. Blended with deep green (for jade), warm gold, and black, "Dragon Baby" embodies protection, luck, and prosperity. We hope "Dragon Baby" brings you luck in all your knitting and crocheting adventures!
Congratulations to Kathy and Mike on welcoming their first little one into this world!
'Tis the season for summer babies, so take a look at some of these wildly popular baby knits to start working on for the expecting mothers in your life!

The history of knitting in America is a rich one filled with stories of nimble hands creating garments to keep families warm over the centuries. As diverse as the Americans who immigrated from various countries, the fiber techniques varied depending on a person's heritage. Despite the incredible range of diversity, the widespread sense of American patriotism has brought knitters of all backgrounds together over the centuries through a common cause. Sock knitting efforts for soldiers goes back to the Revolutionary War and has continued in every major war since, with the largest efforts being WWI and WWII. An article on HistoryLink.org takes an in-depth look at "Knitting for Victory" that some of you might find interesting. Additionally, the book "No Idle Hands" tells first hand accounts of knitters throughout American history and is an exceptional read. (Photo courtesy of the American Red Cross.)
With this incredible history often comes the desire to support American-made yarns and knitting products. That's why we were so excited to have Imperial Yarns join
our family of American made yarns recently. Imperial Stock Ranch is a 30,000 acre ranch in eastern Oregon's high desert that uses sustainable land practices while raising sheep and cattle. Their yarns are beyond scrumptious with super-soft fibers that are minimally processed. We love the little bit of plant fiber that is occasionally found in the yarn giving it extra character and and sense of connection to its place of origin.
To try out some of these delicious new Imperial Yarns, check out the fun kits we've put together using their lovely patterns including: The Raindrop Bag, Rustic Shawl, Evening Dusk Bolero, or the Swing Cardigan. Or, just grab a few skeins and play around with some of your favorite patterns as this yarn is great for hats, shawls, scarves, sweaters - you name it! Any way you knit it, you are sure to love the naturally soft feel of this wool on your fingers!
Psst! Here are some more fun ways to try out Imperial Yarns:
1. Enter our blog giveaway for Imperial Yarn Roving and Kits courtesy of Jeanne and Dan
Carter at Imperial Stock Ranch! You have until Thursday, 7/12 at 11pm PST to enter!
2. The first 30 people who place an order for an Imperial Yarns product (pattern or yarn) and put the word "NEWSLETTER" in their order notes will receive a cute Imperial Yarn button!
3. Lastly, be sure to watch Wool Watcher on Friday, July 13th for some great deals on Imperial's Sliver Roving!
And if just knitting with Imperial Yarn isn't enough for you, there are plenty of other wonderful
yarns and knitting products made right here in the US of A! We love Swan's Island's Organic Merino and naturally-dyed wool yarns, Brown Sheep's gorgeous color palette and range of weights, and Sweet Grass Wool's super soft silk and wool blend!
When it comes to the perfect gear for carrying our knitting supplies, we turn to Chicken Boot's awesome needle cases and notions
bags with their cheery fabrics and quality construction, as well as Top Shelf Totes Yarn Pops clever designs and fun prints!

Wait...did we say sliver roving? Yep, you read correctly. Jimmy Beans Wool now carries roving yarn for all of the spinners out there! Speaking of spinning, we wanted to send a big congratulations to our very own Allison Judge!
| Allison has been with Jimmy Beans Wool for over five years and is currently our Yarn Logistics Maven, keeping our warehouse neat and tidy for our pullers, finding homes for all of our new lines (like Imperial Yarns!), and generally keeping all of us sane! What many folks might not know about Allie is that she is also an extremely talented knitter, designer, spinner, and writer often having articles and book reviews published in Spin Off Magazine. More recently, one of her designs was chosen for republication in Spin Off's e-book "8 Handspun Scarves to Felt, Knit, and Weave." Not only that, but her Ombre Silk Scarf with Beaded Fringe design gracesene Church for their beautiful design! (To see more details on the e-book, be sure to check out the Interweave Store.) |
Allie is also our resident spinner and has been giving spinning lessons to the gals around the shop. With the recent addition of Imperial Sliver Roving to our mix of fiber offerings, we've been so excited to try something new! When Allie isn't here to help, we've been turning to books like Spin Art for help and inspiration. We've been so
excited about spinning lately that Jimmy herself has joined in on the fun! She has decided to carry Schacht Looms and Spinning Wheels for early this fall (as well as hand spindles)...so stay tuned! |

| We hope those of you who ordered a copy of Knit Red are thoroughly enjoying the beautiful knits the designers have contributed! We know this book has inspired many knitting projects with the gals here at the shop. Cheryl has been itching to knit up Michele Rose Orne's Linen Stitch Blanket since she first laid eyes on this simple yet beautiful blanket. Knit out of Swans Island Colors Fingering, this blanket is warm and oh-so-cozy for the chilly winter months on the coast of Maine (where Michele is from). Made completely in the USA, Swans Island is one of the few companies who pride themselves on the organic yarns they produce. From where the yarn is spun to how it's washed and dyed, this yarn is from a certified organic mill. |
Michele lost her mother to heart disease in 1994, when her mother was just 63. At that time, there was very little attention paid to the risk of heart disease in women, and Michele's mother dismissed the warning signs. The next day a friend took her to the ER, where it was discovered that Michele's mother had suffered a heart attack. Later that night, she passed away after having another attack. The possibility that her mother's death could have been prevented motivates Michele to lead a healthy lifestyle and she hopes that Knit Red will encourage women to educate themselves about heart health.
What's a better way to get the word out about Stitch Red than to have an ad in Martha Stewart Living! One of Laura's friends was flipping through her most recent issue when she stumbled upon our Knit Red ad. Can you believe it? In Martha Stewart Living! She immediately sent Laura a text message. We still can't believe it! If you're a fan of Martha Stewart Living, check out her July 2012 issue. Not only is it full of wonderful crafting ideas, but we're in it! Kathy, who designed this month's Limted Edition color, "Dragon Baby", has been an integral part of our team here at Jimmy Beans Wool for almost three years! She
and her hubby moved here from Texas a few years ago for work and they just love living in the Reno-Tahoe area! Kathy is a talented musician and music teacher (which she used to do in her former life before she found fiber). Actually, she used to be a high school band director, which comes in handy when we need someone to keep us in line!
For the past three years, Kathy has done just about everything here from customer service to purchasing lead. While she'll be out for the next few months to get to know her new little one, we look forward to seeing her smiling face back in the office this fall! Congratulations Kathy! |
