How to do a Half Double Crochet Stitch (right & left-handed):

Start with a foundation chain row. See how to create a crochet foundation chain in our How to Crochet.
Yarn over, go into the 2nd stitch from hook, yarn over again and pull it through the stitch. You should now have three loops on the hook.
Yarn over again, and pull through all three loops on your hook.

That is your Half Double Crochet!

*Tip: If you want to space your half double crochets out to create a larger hole in your crocheted fabric, chain 1 between each half double crochet and skip every other foundation stitch.
