Heather knit these team-spirit themed socks for her brother-in-law, who, like Heather, is a UNC Chapel Hill grad (go Tarheels!). She used a basic top-down striped pattern with a 1x1 ribbed shorty cuff for a man's size Large, with 4 stripe repeat at the top and instep and 5 stripe repeat closer to the toe. She designed the heel flap on graph paper and knitted it using the intarsia method, while continuing the stripe pattern on the instep of the sock, and reversing the colors on the second sock. Try the
Knitting Pure and Simple Beginner's Lightweight Sock Pattern, shorten the cuff and add stripes for a similar effect!
Heather used Louet Gems Fingering yarn in Teal and Natural. A good substitute would be Shibui Sock in 5483 Rapids and 7501 Natural - you'll need about 120-150 yards of each color.
