As soon as I saw this Blackforest Naturwolle yarn by Muench in the Wattenmeer color I knew I had to make something for my younger brother Jonathan in it.
He's a really special kid, a soon-to-be Captain in the Army and just
returned from Iraq in September, so I wanted to make him something
really special. He spent a year in Germany as an exchange student when
he was in high school and speaks fluent German. I knew he would
appreciate yarn that was hand-spun in Germany. I thought this yarn
would be perfect in a subtle cable pattern to give it a little more texture. I raveled this pattern, Wavelet Hat by: Sami Preuninger from her blog Delinquent Croissant because it looked easy, fast, and well written. The hat knit up beautifully and I was able to finish it quite quickly. It only took me two evenings of knitting, probably 4 hours total, to knit up on US size 10 dpns. I altered the pattern a bit to fit a man's head, the original is for womens hat on the smaller side. It calls for size 10.5 needles and only casting on 56 sts and then increasing to 72 sts after the ribbing. I cast on all 72 sts to start so as to make sure the hat would fit and I also knit an extra repeat in the wavelet pattern so 5 full repeats or 40 rounds in the pattern to make it a bit larger to fit a man's head
even though in my mind Jon is still the little boy we used to call Mr. Hulu. Overall, the hat turned out beautiful and Jon truly appreciated his thoughtful gift.
