| Have you ever wondered what it would be like to knit with a particular yarn before choosing it for your project? Buying yarn online can be tough enough, but even in the shop you often can't knit with the yarn before you have bought the whole skein, wound it, and taken it home. Well, we've come up with a fun new way to "taste" a yarn before you buy a full skein allowing you the chance to try before you buy! |
These charming little "Cascade Cupcakes" are 12-20 yd. mini-skeins for you to swatch or knit small projects with! Each bakery box comes with a dozen yarns for you to try in carefully selected "flavor" groupings. Choose from Luxury, Stash Staples, Washable, and Socks and Shawls to try a variety of Cascade yarns suitable for a range of projects. Also included are two exclusive patterns (one of which is the Scrappy Cowgirl Bandana shown here) designed especially for this collection, as well as links to an online key for every yarn in the collection.
With these mini cupcakes to "taste" ahead of time, you'll be prepared with the knowledge and experience you need to choose a yarn quickly and easily for your next project!

Kristen's latest free pattern is the perfect pair of fingerless mitts for fall! Named for a type of cloud formation that is common in the Eastern Sierra Mountains, lenticular clouds are known for their layered, circular, UFO-like shape that often looks as if they were stacked on top of one another. Kristen was inspired on a recent walk where she noticed a lenticular cloud formation where the play of light and shadow on the cloud layers gave her the idea to create these slouchy, color-blocked mitts! This simple mitt pattern, knit in Cascade's Lana d' Oro yarn, a blend of 50% wool and 50% alpaca, can be done in as many colors as you like. While the tri-color combo shown here is classically straight forward, they could easily be knit in just one shade, or a whole rainbow of fun colors!
|
Basic stockinette stitch in-the-round makes this a project suitable for beginning knitters, refreshing your skills, or that no-brainer project that is perfect for relaxing with. Be sure to download the free pattern to get started right away, add it to your Ravelry queue for later, or grab one of our kits in one of six custom color combos chosen by Kristen herself! The Lenticular Mitts are written for adult sizes small through x-large, making them a great pattern for your holiday gift knitting!
Be sure to keep your eyes on the Wool Watcher on Monday, September 23rd for some awesome deals on Cascade Lana d'Oro yarn! |

As we start moving into the cooler fall months we wanted to give one last hurrah to summer with this month's Denise2Go, Tiptoe Through Tulips. Using the fun and bubbly Moxie Fabric Collection by Erin McMorris, the limited edition case this month is super cute! Buttercup, the outside fabric, is a geometrical flower print in a lovely mix of orange, pink, teal and purple. The inside cheerfully greets you with the coordinating Talk fabric that is printed all over with the word "Hello." The needles are all light grey, with teal cords that perfectly match the fabric. Denise2Go Needle Sets are great for the knitter on-the-go with six pairs of needle tips in the most popular sizes: US 5-10, three cords (14", 16", and 19" lengths), and a cord extender in every set.
It also includes two cord end caps and a handy crochet hook! All of these knitting essentials tuck up into a charming palm-sized little bundle that fits easily in a knitting bag, purse, or pocket. |

Folks have been buzzing about the newest Schachenmayr original yarns, and for good reason! Their latest batch of yarns are wonderful for creative young knitters and crocheters and go along perfectly with their My Mountain Campaign, which was created to encourage active people to knit and crochet their own accessories and garments to wear while doing the activities they love! Their new yarns are perfect for items that will sustain hard use on the slopes or in the backcountry and are super stylish to boot. Boston and Boston Style are a chunky weight acrylic and wool blend yarns with tons of great colors and versatility. Lumio is a bulky acrylic yarn with reflective thread running through it, making it perfect for people who love to be active at night! Lova is a wo that is super light and lofty with intermittent color splashes throughout. And finally, the Bravo Big and Bravo Big Color yarns are bulky, soft and high-quality acrylic that creates bulky projects quickly. All of these yarns come in a range of fun colors (including neon) and look awesome knit up! | To kick off their My Mountain Campaign, Westminster Fibers and Schachenmayr hosted a hat design contest and our in-house designer Kristen, was selected as one of the finalists! Her hat, the Sugar Bowl Hat, actually doubles as a cowl and is knit in Schachenmayr original Lova yarn. She would love to be voted into the top five and we were hoping you could help her out! Voting takes place on the My Mountain Facebook Page and ends on September 23rd. If you are a fan of Kristen's Free Patterns that you see in our newsletter each month (like the Lenticular Mitts above), help to show your support by taking a second to vote! |
Once the contest wraps up, The Sugar Bowl Hat/Cowl will be available on the Schachenmayr website as a free pattern, and we'll be sure to let you know when it's available. However, if Kristen's design can somehow garner the most votes, her pattern will be available as a paid download with the proceeds going to the charity of her choice. If she wins, Kristen wants her design to benefit the Stitch Red Campaign in support of The Heart Truth! You can read more about Kristen's design and the contest on the JBW Blog.

New this fall from Noro, we have several lovely yarns to share with you, Cyochin, Shiro and Obi. Cyochin is a single-ply worsted yarn in gorgeous shades that are a little more muted than usual, but will self-stripe beautifully. With a composition of 86% wool, 7% mohair and 7% silk this yarn is perfect for warm and cozy winter garments! Shiro, a DK-weight blend of 40% wool, 30% cashmere, and 30% silk, is a gorgeous luxury yarn with a soft color palette. Obi, the final new addition to the Noro lineup, is also a single-ply yarn, but has a bright and cheerful color palette! It is a blend of 55% wool, 35% silk and 10% mohair, which gives each skein a subtle sheen and drape. At 3.5 stitches per inch, Obi will knit or crochet up into a warm and luxurious finished piece! Any of these new yarns would be perfect for Ann Norling's new Cowl on the Diagonal pattern or any of the patterns in Noro's latest booklet Sweet Winter. Obi - 02 Jade, Red, Blue, Turquoise $22.00 | Cyochin - 05 Jade, Green, Pink, Brown $20.00 | Shiro - 09 Purple, Rust, Green $25.00 | Obi - 07 Pink, Lilac, Black, Sky $22.00 |
In addition to the two new yarns from Noro, we also have gorgeous new colors available in our favorite standbys Silk Garden and Kureyon. In both lines the newcomers are a little darker, with beautiful jewel tones providing the pop of color, making them wonderful for the coming cooler months. We just love the Spoked Cardigan from the cover of the 2011 Weekend Knits special issue of Interweave and think it would look absolutely smashing in one of the new colors of Kureyon! |

We couldn't be happier to help crafty students pay for their higher education through the Beans for Brains Scholarship Program.
