Learn With Jeanne: How to Clean Your Sewing Machine
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

How to clean your sewing machine

We are all having fun learning to sew here at the shop, and Jeanne reminds us of the importance of sewing machine maintenance in her Basics of Cleaning Your Sewing Machine video tutorial. Your sewing machine is the most important tool you have, and keeping it clean and in tip top order is critical for successful, hassle-free projects. Remember to always read your manual and be familiar with your machine's abilities. Jeanne also recommends changing your needle on a regular basis and being aware of what kind of needle the fabric you are working with will respond best to. Your manual may have a needle guide in it, but if you're lacking info, Jeanne suggests using this great PDF guide by Schmetz. She changes her needle for every project; if it's a large project, she may change the needle in the middle of the project as well. When a needle breaks, it can damage your machine, as well as fly in all directions (and possibly hit your eyes, or face), so it's worth that little change to protect yourself and your machine!

Jenn Ski has done it yet again and come out with one of the cutest lines of whimsical fabrics we have seen in a while! The Oink-A-Doodle-Moo collection is taking the shop by storm and inspired some really great project ideas. Currently in the idea-o-sphere are: project bags, baby and kids' PJs, and the more complex Eye Spy quilts (quilts featuring fun novelty fabrics with cute images you can use to play I Spy with)... Fun, fun, fun!!! If you're looking for yet another idea, consider doing some pillow cases for the little one in your life. We have quite a few little sprouts around here these days, and this line adds inspiration for anything kid-like!

Sew Red Design Feature: Marcia Harmening
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

We are all "sew" excited that our newest book, Sew Red is finally here in the shop! It is causing quite the stir around here, but particularly with our favorite quilter, Gus! He has just purchased the fabric for the amazing appliquéd piece, Queen of Hearts by Marcia Harmening. Jeanne wants to make this one as well and is listening to Gus' advice - she can't wait to learn this technique. This stunning piece can be hand appliquéd, or machine appliquéd, so it's your choice.
Queen of Hearts Quilt
Gus' tip for appliqué is to use a light box and trace your appliqué pattern right onto your interfacing. If you don't have a light box (like me), grab a clear plastic container and flip it over with a light source underneath. He uses a flashlight, so how easy is that?

      The Zen Chic Comma Collection
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Comma by Zen Chic is taking the fabric world by storm! This exciting new collection features retro-modern motifs such as newsprint, asterisks, commas and everything in between. The mix of large-scale prints like the Asterisks and small-scale Periods is great for adding visual interest to larger projects. We also love the selection of retro colors that can be used for anything from home decor to bags to personal accessories. From mustard yellow and gray to tangerine and lime, the color palette is easy to mix and match. Can't decide? Try the Nigella - Multi; it's got them all!

Jenn, a self-proclaimed "grammar nerd" who works in the fabric department, was so excited when we finally received this collection and can't wait to share her love of punctuation with the world by making the one-hour skirt from Brett Bara's book, Sewing in a Straight Line! We also think fabrics from this collection would make a great school-themed tote bag from many of the patterns in Everyday Totes. Or how about the Atkinson Designs Reader Wrap pattern, featuring the Newsprint fabrics? Whatever you choose, it's easy to make a statement with Zen Chic's Comma collection.

Gus' Valori Wells Mina Bag
Gus' Valori Wells Mina Bag
Gus wanted a small quick project to work on amongst all of his big quilting projects and so he grabbed a copy of Valori Wells' Mina Bag and went to work. This bag is a gift for his Mom up in Canada, and we think she is going to be thrilled. He did mention that he adjusted the lining measurements to eliminate bunching, as well as making his straps a bit wider. He used some stash fabric for his lining and told us he would do this bag again anytime! We are all excited about this project and know his Mom will love it!
Rachel's Three-Fabric Skirt
Rachel's Three-Fabric Skirt
Rachel is proving to be quite the seamstress and was so inspired by Kay Whitt's book, Sew Serendipity, that she dove right in. We think the result is stunning! She chose the Three-Fabric Skirt on page 52, did some stash diving and voilà- Her charming skirt was born! Jeanne is so smitten with the skirt that she is considering being a copy cat and make hers using the Joel Dewberry Notting Hill collection. Rachel says that this pattern is well written and easy to follow and she can't wait to sew another one of the patterns from the book!
Kristen's 2nd 1-hour Skirt
Kristen's 2nd 1-hour Skirt
Kristen loved the first 1-hour skirt she made, so she promptly made a second one, this time out of Amy Butler's Lark Collection. This print is called Kasbah. She made this skirt slightly shorter than the first for a more spring-like look! You can find this easy-to-make skirt in Brett Bara's book, Sewing in a Straight Line. This particular pattern has been quite popular here at the shop and has become one of our go-tos when we find new must-have fabrics!

      Meet A Bean: Ashley!
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Ashley with fabric
A friendly and efficient member of our E-commerce team, we are thrilled to have Ashley as part of our family here at JBW. An all around creative and crafty gal, Ashley has been sewing since she was 8 or 9 years old. She learned mending basics from her granny and took classes at a local shop to build up her chops. Though she was a bit reluctant at first to really delve into sewing, after finishing her first functional project (a pleated skirt and vest combo), she was hooked! Right now Ashley likes to make things that fall into the category of "gypsy, hippie or flowy". Constantly inspired by all the fabrics on the racks here at the shop, Ashley has been sketching out ideas to make for her summer wardrobe this summer.
She jokes, "It's a good thing I a big closet, because I'll be adding a few skirts, flowy pants and vests to it soon!" We will be sure to keep you updated on Ashley's projects via our Projects Log.

Not only is Ashley a crafty artisan, she also has a penchant for performing! With a background in musical theatre (she started on the stage at age 9!), Ashley enjoys being in front of an audience and has no fear of public speaking. Her most recent performance skills involve fire! She has been a fire spinner/dancer for almost 3 years, having started with Poi (two balls of fire on chains), and since learned staff (a big stick on fire at both ends), hoop (just like the hula hoops we all fooled around with as children, plus fire!) and her favorite tool, the Levi-wand (a magical floating wand with fire at both ends). Knowing that, it may not surprise you that Ashley is seriously considering running away to join the circus in the future.
