February is Heart Health Month AND the Release of Sew Red!
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Sew Red Book
We couldn't be more thrilled to introduce our latest labor of love-Sew Red! Available now for pre-order (we're expecting it to arrive any day!) Sew Red is the follow-up to last year's Stitch Red book, Knit Red. It features sewing and quilting patterns by over 25 celebrity designers including quilts from Kaffe Fassett, Valori Wells, Tula Pink, and Mark Cesarik, as well as gorgeous accessories and garments by Brett Bara, Anna Maria Horner, Amy Butler, Ty Pennington and so many more! We feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to work with such an accomplished crew.
Each copy purchased from Jimmy Beans Wool will be signed by the author herself, Laura Zander (aka Jimmy)! Inside Sew Red, you'll find pattern sheets, instructions, beautiful photography, heart-healthy tips and recipes, and personal stories of heart disease shared by the designers themselves. Not only that, but we also had the honor of welcoming back Deborah Norville to write the foreword for this very special book.

Since it is a Stitch Red product, we will be contributing 5% of our gross profits from Sew Red to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) in support of The Heart Truth® and women's heart health education and research. We truly hope you enjoy Sew Red!

And now, stay tuned for Crochet Red... due out in February of 2014!

      Introducing Tula Pink!
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Tula Pink is perhaps one of our most popular fabric and quilt designers - and once you've seen her work, it's easy to understand why! Whimsical prints paired with amazing color palettes round out Tula's fabric collections. Her latest book, Quilts from the House of Tula Pink includes 20 different quilt projects and home accessories using her fabrics. The book itself covers quilting techniques and includes useful information on how to design your quilt, choose fabrics, and so much more!
Quilts from the House of Tula Pink book
Not sure you're ready to dive headlong into Tula's fantastical world? Try one of her individual quilt patterns for a taste of her design style. We love the Modern Alphabet and Wind Swept quilts. Or, check out her beautiful heart quilt in Sew Red!
Tula's latest fabric collection, Salt Water, features nautically themed prints in stunning color coordinated groupings. We love them all, especially the Octo Garden, Ocean Ponies, Floaties & Sinkies, and Bubble Shells prints! Even better, she's created some stunning free patterns that correspond to these new prints! Kristen's favorite is the Tranquil Waters Quilt and Rachel loves the Coastal Cruiser Throw Pillow which is too adorable for words!
For all you longtime Tula Pink fans, you'll be happy to know that we have some of her past collections on sale right now in our shop! Select prints from the Parisville, Nightshade, and Prince Charming lines are now on sale! Kristen has fallen for the Prince Charming line and is currently using the Frog Prince and Dandelion prints to make curtains for her bedroom.

A Piece of My Heart Pincushion Tutorial with Jeanne
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Pin Cushion Kit
Jeanne here! It's American Heart Health Month, which means so much to all of us here at JBW and the Stitch Red campaign. And of course we are super excited for our Sew Red book's release!! I have had the pleasure of playing with the charming A Piece Of My Heart Pincushion pattern designed by Diane Lamphron and Michele Filon. I helped create a fun kit for this little project and have been stitching them up at every chance I get. Let me tell you, they are like potato chips, you can't stop with just one! The kits are now available on our website and include all the necessities (minus needle and thread) to sew up your very own!
I thought you might enjoy a quick tutorial on these little beauties and encourage all of you out there learning to sew with us to grab a kit and go for it! Just a reminder: Always read your pattern all the way through before beginning and gather all your tools together, so the project can go smoothly.
Step 1: Choose 2 of the fabrics (either your own, or from the A Piece of My Heart Kit) and place them right sides together. Sew a 1/4 inch seam and iron your seam open.
First Seam
Third Fabric piece
Step 2: Choose your 3rd piece of fabric and line it up (right sides together) over the ironed seam in the center of the piece. Sew 1/4 inch seam and iron this seam open as well.
Step 3: Cut your heart template out and lay it over the seams to see how you want the front of your heart to be oriented, lay your template aside and place your back piece over the area (right sides together) that you want your heart to be positioned in; pin it in place for cutting.
Heart Template
Cut and seam your heart
Step 4: Carefully cut out your heart.

Step 5: Seam a 1/4 inch seam around your heart, leaving about a 2 inch opening on one side, I recommend making this opening about 1/4 inch up from the tip of your heart, as it will be easier to manipulate as you stuff your heart and make a cleaner finish.
Step 6: Clip your corners and the tip of your heart for easier turning. Turn your heart right side out and press. A quick tip: I use a bamboo paper folder for this process, and the rounded end works very well for the top of the heart, while the point pushes the tip of the heart out to a nice sharp point. I have also used a blunt paint brush in a pinch. I recommend pressing your opening area with your 1/4 inch seam turned under, as this makes things so much easier when it's time to sew this closed.
Pressing your Heart
Stuffing
Step 7: Stuff your heart starting with the top and work your way down. I like to stuff it well and push the stuffing away from my opening, so it's easier to sew closed. Don't worry, you can smoosh it all around once it's done!
Step 8: I used invisible thread for the heart pictured here, but caution you that it can be a bit of a challenge, so make sure you are working in a well lit area. I am doing the blind stitch to close the heart, you can see that I am coming up from the inside, through my ironed seam, then I move to the other side, coming up from the inside; I continue in this manner shifting about a centimeter or so every stitch. Don't pull your stitches too tight, or they will pucker.
Closing the seam
I hope you are enjoying learning to sew with us - and please don't ever be afraid to ask questions!

      Kaffe Fassett's Paperweight Collection
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

When we added Kaffe Fassett's colorful prints to our ever-growing fabrics inventory, we all went a little gaga! Here at the shop we have been in love with his creative colorways and designs in the knitting world for years, and now we have his fabric at our fingertips, too. One of our particular favorites is the Paperweight Collection - with its whimsy and color, who wouldn't fall in love? The collection reminds us of millefiori-style Venetian glassware. Millefiori is Italian for a thousand flowers; mille meaning "thousand" and "fiori" meaning flowers. Kaffe's exceptional color know-how and fabulous eye for design make him a winner for any project. How about grabbing 3 contrasting colors and whipping up some pillow cases to cheer up your bed's wardrobe, or maybe even a fun skirt to brighten up the dark days of winter? Whatever you choose, we know that you won't be disappointed in Kaffe's Paperweight Collection!

It's a shirt... it's a tunic... it's a dress... it's Amy Butler's The Liverpool! Versatility is this garment's middle name - work it up in light cotton or heavier home decor fabric, customize the length, hem style, and sleeves, and wear it with anything! The oxford collar looks great on anyone, and the covered buttons add an extra bit of charm that set this pattern apart from other run-of-the-mill shirtdresses. We can't wait to make one in the Rowan by Amy Butler Lark collection; from vivid florals to vintage-inspired prints, this line has something for everybody!
Chateau Rouge Quilt
Chateau Rouge Quilt

As beginning quilters, we have big dreams - but somewhat limited abilities. As our fabric guru Jeanne recommends in the Meet a Bean section below, it's best if we can rein in our ambitions and stick to simple projects at first! But luckily, simple doesn't mean boring, as proven by the French General Chateau Rouge Quilt! In bold, vibrant fabrics, this design turns humble triangles into a work of art, and best of all, the pattern is made up of simple strips and straight lines -perfect for a beginning project!

The patterns are straightforward and effortless, and all of the templates come in a handy pull-out pocket tucked inside the book. The hardest part is choosing which one to do first! Kaffe Fassett Wovens: 47% Off! Kaffe Fassett is renowned and revered by quilters for his use of bold colors and striking design elements to create truly unique fabrics. We love the unexpected turns he sometimes takes, like in creating his Wovens collection; in an intriguing contrast to his bright florals and graphic prints, Wovens uses toned-down colors and retro checkered and striped patterns to make a more subdued but beautifully chic statement. Perfect for smart and stylish masculine garments and accessories, Wovens would also be great for multi-purpose home items like placemats, dinner napkins, or even a classy picnic blanket!

      Meet a Bean: Jeanne!
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Jeanne
If you know Jimmy Beans, you know Jeanne - one of our very first employees, her magical hands have helped build this company from the beginning. Although we might know her as a fiber nut and fabulous knitter, Jeanne also learned sewing from her mom at an early age and hasn't stopped since! She started out making and embroidering her own clothes, and now she's on to quilts, bags, pajamas...you name it! An artist and seeker of color in all aspects of her world, Jeanne likes to choose simple but well-made pattern designs and then let the fabric do the talking in her creations.
Some things you might NOT know about Jeanne... She's one of a rare species: the native Nevadan! She loves to explore our beautiful state by hiking, fishing, hunting, and practicing valuable survival skills learned from her dad. You can also find her on her motorcycle, rain or shine (she even has electric gloves for those chilly days!), digging in her vegetable garden, hanging out with her awesome husband and kids, or trying to keep her dog and cat from eating each other. Sometimes, we even catch her telling jokes! Her favorite? "Why can't you trust an atom? They make up everything!!"
Jeanne again!
For many of us here at the shop, Jeanne is one of our go-to knitting and sewing experts. Some of her sage advice: "Start with the basics and know your sewing machine inside and out. Clean it often and it will purr like a kitten. Change your needle often and be sure to use the right needle for the project. Most importantly, don't be afraid to set goals for that tailored jacket, or king size quilt, but start at the beginning. Everyone has to start there and work their way up to the tough stuff, but don't give up! No matter what, always have fun!!"
