Like many of the Lorna's Limited Edition colorways, the choosing and naming of November's color was a team effort. This particular color combo was concocted by Sarah, one of our former shippers who moved to Idaho a few months ago. We all miss seeing her around the shop (as well as her renderings of pop songs in opera), but every time we see her colorway, it reminds us of her smiling face! Inspired by her favorite season, autumn, Sarah chose shades that reminded her of the transition from summer to winter: faded orange-red, dusty maroon, pale pink and violet. When Cheryl saw the muted, harvest hues Sarah had chosen, her first thought was "rusty bucket". A former fruit and nut farmer, and keeper of horses, pigs, ducks & chickens, sheep, cats, dogs, and any other animals the kids could think of, you'd better believe there were a lot of rusty buckets lying around Cheryl's barn! Sarah's colorway instantly conjured up the image of all those rusty buckets. Once Rusty Bucket was thrown out into the universe, the imagery was almost too perfect and the name stuck! The simple, rustic tones of Rusty Bucket make it a versatile colorway that can be used for smaller one-skein projects - like the Churchmouse Turkish Bed Socks - or larger garments such as the Knitting Pure and Simple Neck-Down Swing Coat.

Earlier this year, Stacy (of Tahki Stacy Charles) came to visit us at the shop and show off all the new and amazing Tahki and Filatura de Crosa yarns for Fall 2012. Ever since then, we've been chomping at the bit to share these fantastical yarns with you - and now they are all finally here! First up, Cora Color and Cora Naturals. This 50/50 alpaca and Corriedale wool blend is locally sourced and spun in upstate New York. Available in subtly stunning botanical shades, as well as natural, undyed hues, Cora is a warm and cozy worsted weight yarn that is just perfect for scarves, like the Sheepish Scarf, and wraps, such as the Rollie Saratoga Collection.
Bulky yarns are IT this season, so bust out your big needles! Juno, Jackson and Ringo give you three unique choices for those last minute gifts and quick knits this season. Light and lofty, Juno is an alpaca blend. The chaninette construction and heathered hues give Juno a unique, slightly tweedy look that works well for complex stitch patterns, like the spectacular cables used for the Conan Doyle Vest found in the Anthology pattern booklet. If you need a little more color to liven up the winter months, Jackson has you covered. With 131 yards per skein, you get plenty of plush wool for hats, scarves, or my fav, the Masters Cardigan! Even bulkier than Juno or Jackson, Ringo is super bulky, with a thick-thin, chain link construction. This yarn is amazing! It can be knit as a traditional yarn or you can knit in the chain links to create mesh. Check out Stacy reviewing this yarn in our Ringo video review to learn more. If you decide to give this new technique a try, consider making the DeMeurier Shrug, a stylish free pattern from TSC! Winter wouldn't be much fun if we didn't have scarves. Luckily, Filatura di Crosa has three new ruffle scarf yarns to keep you warm and trendy: Rumba, Polar and Kiss Kiss. Both Rumba and Kiss Kiss have a box or ladder construction, similar to Cha-Cha or Tundra. Rumba's claim to fame is the bobbles hanging from the ladder. Once knit or crocheted, the resulting scarf looks almost boa-like. Kiss Kiss is similar but instead of bobbles, it has a think fringe for a more feather-like effect. Stacy gave Leanne a skein of Kiss Kiss and she came back to the shop the next day with a fabulous scarf she didn't take off for a whole week! Then we have Polar. Comparable to Moda in construction, Polar has a luxurious band of polar fleece along one edge. The resulting ruffle is not only cozy to wear, it looks simply stunning! Try the 2-Ball Ruffle Scarf pattern from TSC for a truly unique scarf. Also, speaking of Moda, check out the latest Moda Lame Long Print! This classic ruffle yarn comes in 100g skeins with plenty of yardage for a smokin' scarf!

Yep, November is here, which means ski season and a slew of holidays are nearly upon us. Time to get crackin' on those handmade gifts! If you're lacking inspiration (or like me, motivation), check out some of these tried and true -as well as new- gift ideas! Some take an evening to finish, others a couple weeks. Regardless, you still have plenty of time to get the ball rolling!
For those who have a lot of gifts to make and not much time, you can never go wrong with Churchmouse's Welted Fingerless Gloves. One skein of Tosh DK, Malabrigo Worsted Merino or Rios, or Manos Silk Blend will give you enough yarn for a pair and half (2 skeins gives you 3 pairs!). Another simple knit is Kristen's Hats for the Whole Family pattern -a free pattern on our site that can be knit or crocheted for any size head! Use the suggested Swan's Island Natural Colors Worsted, or mix it up with Classic Shades, BSA's Worsted Cotton (great for those who aren't fans of wool), or Cashmerino Aran. Other favorites include Ann Norling's Multi Directional Scarf and the Mukluk Slippers from Knitting Pure and Simple -pattern available for both kids and adults!
If you aren't as pressed for time (yet), or looking for just the right gift, these projects may take a little more time, but the results are well worth the effort. Several of the gals at the shop have made the Brooklyn Tweed Umaro blanket and fallen in love. Umaro uses super bulky yarn such as Big Baby, Magnum, or DeAire and knits up on US 15 needle. For those with a nose for fashion, the Andora CapmyBeansWool.com/knitting/yarn/ImperialYarn/Columbia2ply.asp">Columbia 2-ply, or the Churchmouse Easy Folded Poncho using Felted Tweed are sure to be a hit -we hear ponchos are making a comeback this season! Another popular pattern this fall so far has been Isolda's Peak's Island Hood. Knit in Berroco Elements, this hood is great for layering and staying warm as the temperature drops. |

Kollage Stitch Red Square Needles $16.50 | Red needles? Could it be?! YES! We at Jimmy Beans have partnered up with the folks at Kollage to bring you these fabulous Stitch Red Square Needles. Available as circulars and double points, the needles made their debut last weekend at VK Live and were a huge hit! Exclusive to Jimmy Beans Wool (they even have our name on them, and the Stitch Red logo!), 5% of the gross profits from each pair sold will go to the FNIH in support of The Heart Truth® and women's heart health education and research. With all the holiday and winter knitting ahead, we strongly recommend these needles for your next project. Not only are they pretty and support a good cause, but the square shape reduces stress on your hands and helps to keep your stitches nice and even. |
Silk Pearl - 182 $44.00 | Artyarns Silk Pearl yarns are here! The original Silk Pearl is a gorgeous 100% silk DK weight yarn. With its unique chainette construction, this yarn is light, yet drapes beautifully and has a muted silky sheen that gives the fabric a surreal glow. Ideal for knitters and crocheters who love Artyarns but prefer a more substantial yarn, we also carry Silk Pearl in the Beaded and Beaded with Sequins bases! Available in some of the most popular tonal and variegated colorways, if you don't see what you're looking for, just shoot us an email or give us a call and we be happy to get it on order for you! | Panda - Lady Fern $22.00 | Sharon's favorite animal of all time is a panda, so when Wool Creek Wool's Panda yarn arrived last week, she was really besio, bambo rayon and nylon blend is a fingering weight gem. The wool component is from Targhee Sheep, bred in Montana's high mountains. This breed is known for some of the softest wool found in the United States! On top of that, each gorgeous color way is hand-dyed to perfection -I'm having trouble choosing my favorite one! This yarn is not only perfect for cozy socks, but would be a stunning choice for silky smooth shawls and fantabulous lightweight cardigans! | Bamboo Bloom Book 1: Backyard Blooms $14.25 | Backyard Blooms is brimming with fun and fabulous patterns using Universal Yarns gorgeous Bamboo Bloom and Bamboo Bloom Handpaints. The multi-textured thick and thin quality of this yarn is perfect for simple pullovers like the Weekend in the Country sweater and elegantly unique wraps such as the Sugared Vines Stole. We also like the Morning Market Tee, pictured on the front cover of this book! If you're looking for a colorful project and inspiring yarn to work with, Backyard Blooms will get your creative juices flowing! | Better Buddy Case - Pumpkin Spice $20.00 | The Better Buddy Kit from Namaste is, well, better than ever! An upgrade from the original Buddy Case, these small, stylish cases are made to hold all your necessary notions so you can have them anywhere you may need it...be it the living room, on the bus, in a waiting room, at the airport, craft night... you name it! Internal magnets keep metal notions such as snippy scissors and tapestry needles in place so they don't fall out. A removable divider helps maintain order, and the strong snap clasp ensures your Better Buddy cases only opens when you want it to. | Bambino - 802 Candy Pink $12.00 | Be Sweet's Bambino yarn is the same super-soft cotton bamboo blend as their self-striping Bambino Taffy yarn, just in solid colorways. Whether you prefer plant fiber to animal fibers, or are just looking for a plush, lightweight yarn, Bambino is it! Not to mention, it's also machine washable, making it great for cozy baby knits as well! | Pam Powers Knits - Cowboy Cowl $7.00 | On top of all this new yarn for fall, we've got plenty of patterns coming in to support it! Pam Powers Knits has been stealing the show recently with her stylish Cowboy Cowl. Shevawn fell in love with this pattern the moment she saw it, and knit one up in Tosh Merino -it really is stunning! If you are in need of a flashier neck warmer, check out Pam's Ruffled and Rouched Scarf or her Challah Infinity Scarf. Both use worsted weight yarn. Use your favorite, or try some of ours like Malabrigo's Worsted Merino, Manos' Maxima, Misti's Best of Nature Worsted, or Be Sweet's Bambino! And don't forget to take a peek at her sweater designs! Setsuko is both sweater AND cowl and Devonshire is a timeless, classic cardi. |

Fur, ice, net, scandals?! Plymouth definitely went all-out this season in the ruffle department! We'll start with the scandal... Scandalicious is ten yards of texture-tastic color-mazingness. Constructed similarly to Rowan's Kidsilk Creation, Scandelicious is a pre-knit tube. By knitting or crocheting along one edge you can make a voluptuous scarf in no time! Similarly constructed, Passion Nette has a finer weave and results in more delicate ruffles. We love the fun, whimsical colors and drape of this cotton-acrylic blend. Jenn recently succumbed to the ruffle craze, and has fallen for Passion Ice. The glitz and glamorous fringe on this ruffle yarn (similar to Plymouth's Joy Rainbow yarn) is hard to resist, and the sparkly colorways are stunning! Last but not least, Passion Fur is truly one-of-a-kind. The body of this ruffle yarn is an open, multicolor nette with thick, cozy faux fur running along one edge. Of course Plymouth is about more than just ruffles. Their latest yarns include Baby Alpaca Aire, Europa Tweed, Gina and Sakki! From last to first, Sakki is, you guessed it, a sock yarn! Hand dyed in South Africa this merino, mohair and nylon blend is great for durable, comfy socks that will keep your feet warm and dry. It is also perfect for shawls like the Sakki Crochet Scarf! Another multicolor yarn this season is Gina. A self-striping single ply, Gina is 100% wool and comes with 109 yards per 50g skein. This versatile yarn can be used for just about any project -6 skeins is all it takes to make the popular Side to Side Vest! And now for the thick, quick-knittin' yarns. The bulky Europa Tweed knits up on a US 10 and comes in 7 gorgeous marled colorways. To make a pair of mittens and a hat (like the ones from the Europa Tweed Hat, Mitt and Shawl Set) it only takes 4 balls total (2 balls for each project)! Lastly, Baby Alpaca Aire. Ridiculously soft, this is one of those yarns you have to feel to believe -and once you've got your hands on it, you won't want to let go! This heavy worsted weight yarn is perfect for sweaters, vest, hats and cowls! |

Just two contrasting colors of Tuhu's rainbow palette, a pair of US 6 - 16" circulars (not included in the kit), and the free pattern for this stylish cowl are all you need to start knitting! A great project for those interested in exploring multi-color knitting, it is easy to find your rhythm when working on this cowl. Cheryl celebrates her one year anniversary of being a Bean this month! A hard working, joke-cracking go-getter, Cheryl started out pulling orders and is now one of the lovely ladies in customer service answering phones and responding to emails. If you couldn't tell from her intro at the beginning of this newsletter, Cheryl has some experience with animals. She raises puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind, something she started doing with her kids over 20 years ago when they were in 4H. Now her grandkids help raise the pups! Hana, her current charge, is the 17th puppy they have raised. | |
Hana comes into the shop every day with Cheryl and is a model employee. She shows up on time, keeps quiet, causes no trouble and is a calming influence for all the other beans. While Hana may not contribute to the bottom line, she is always willing to be petted, kiss people and try to climb in their laps. It's a great arrangement we have with Hana; we reap the benefits of her cuteness each day, and she gets exposure to all sorts of experiences that will help her to be an exemplary Guide Dog! Having spent a year here at JBW continually inspires Cheryl, a life-long crafter, to stay creative and learn new things. Her latest endeavor has been spinning, which she is learning from Allie. A fan of everything from Imperial Yarns, she has been honing her new skills using the Sliver Roving. She's also back on the sewing bandwagon after a 20 year hiatus (with all this amazing fabric on the shelves, it is impossible not to be!), and is planning several quilts -the hard part is finding the time! Of course there is knitting too. Cheryl has fallen in love with every design in Laura's Knit Red book, especially the Swans Island blanket. Really, any excuse to use Swans Island yarn is a good excuse! Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted also holds a special place in her heart. It was the first yarn she ever used to knit a sweater for one of her grandchildren! |
