As we've been taking a trip down memory lane for our big birthday this year, we've been reflecting on all of the brilliant (and even not so great) ideas Team Beans has had over the years! To celebrate our birthday, we want to re-introduce one of our sharpest and most memorable "Aha!" moments! While on a trip to India in late 2017, Jimmy realized she forgot her tape measure. Luckily, with a Sharpie, a ruler app on her phone, and a brilliant idea from our general manager, Shannon, they turned Jimmy's knitting needles into a tape measure with marks at every inch. Jimmy said, "Dang! That's smart!" And SmartStix were officially born in 2018!
To put it plain and simple, Jimmy's SmartStix are a knitting needle and tape measure in one! Not only will these handy needles measure your progress, your gauge, and even your wraps per inch, but more importantly, you'll be able to measure the time and energy saved looking for a tape measure! These aluminum needles range from circular to double points and interchangeables!
So what makes these needles so SMART? Save Time - Stop wasting time looking for your tape measure! Measure Stuff - Measure your sweaters, cowls, or even when your toddler grows 2 inches! Assess Gauge - Now you have no excuse for not checking your gauge! Reduce Clutter - The less space our tools take up, the more space we have for yarn! Test Weight - You can easily find out the weight of your yarn by measuring wraps per inch directly on the needle!
Plus, as an added bonus, Jimmy's SmartStix are color coded by length so you never have to sift through your case! (16" circulars are red, 24" circulars are blue, 32" circulars are green, and 40" circulars are pink!)

2022 has flown by already! We're now deep into summer and before we know it the leaves will start changing color and one of our favorite events of the year will be here! The Sierra Nevada Yarn Crawl is happening September 15-18, and to kick-off the fun, we're getting started on a pre-crawl Make-Along!
With patterns for knitters and crocheters alike, you can join in with your fellow fiber artists to make some stunning pieces to adorn you while you crawl! Shawl we get started?!
Knitters: Inspired by the breathtaking Fallen Leaf Lake in the Sierra Nevadas, Afifa Sayeed incorporated an intricate repeating lace pattern to mimic the action of leaves falling into her Fallen Leaf Wrap! With buttons on opposing sides, this versatile shawl can also be worn as a shrug, poncho, cardigan or cowl, making it the perfect accessory for your fall afternoon walks among the colorful leaves! To make this shawl ultra-plush and cozy, we recommended knitting this up using Malabrigo Caprino yarn.
Crocheters: Featuring a simple and elegant lace motif of small leaves, the Leaves of Tahoe Shawl designed by Linda Dean, transports us to the beautiful water of Lake Tahoe in the autumn!
This show-stopping five point shawl is not only stylish but super comfortable! This project uses two balls of the soft and bold Scheepjes Whirlette yarn!
Ready to get making? Sierra Nevada Yarn Crawl is hosting two Zoom sessions to check in with your progress and get encouragement on 7/20 and 8/17! You can also head over to Ravelry and join the MAL group to get tips and share your projects!
