August 2011 Lorna's Laces Limited Edition Release
In June, the race between The Boy Who Lived and He Who Must Not Be Named was incredibly close! HWMNBN won by a narrow margin, showing us that sometimes evil does win. However, good will not be silenced! In the wake of the release of HWMNBN, supporters of The Boy Who Lived were not afraid to let us know their displeasure through owl posts...and other methods! In another poll, asking if The Boy Who Lived deserved another chaesounding yes. So it is with great pleasure that we announce that The Boy Who Lived has indeed survived and is our August 2011 LLE colorway! Ten points for Gryffindor! :D
Whether you are a fan of Harry Potter or not, you have to admit that there is something about this series that has captured the fascination of millions across the world. From young to old, east to west, boy and girl - a love for The Boy Who Lived and his world thrives. It is a world much like ours - full of teenage angst, relationships, politics, and economics. Within this wizarding world exists a depth of emotion that has touched each of us - a bone deep weariness, side-splitting mirth, uncaring selfishness, genuine kindness and generosity, love...and hate. The complexity of this world mirrors our own, which is reflected in Harry's colorway.
Many have found the tones of The Boy Who Lived within the illustrations of the hardbound books, the burnt oranges, tangerines, amethyst purples and spring greens all come together in a way that screams "Magic!" But it could be any manner of inspiration, like the green of the Quidditch pitch, the ginger hair of the Weasley family, and goblin's blood (if goblins had purple blood, which I imagine they would!). What you see as the inspiration of this Limited Edition Color is up to you, and that is the perfection of magic. Any way you have it, The Boy Who Lived is a fantastic blend of colors destined for needles and hooks itching for a fun project to create! All it takes is a dash of magic and a whole lot of imagination, and we have something truly extraordinary in our midst.
Be sure to grab a skein or two of The Boy Who Lived in
Baby Me Boo
(I sure did!) because this is our LAST month of the epic collaboration between Misti Alpaca and Lorna's Laces. If you are looking for new Baby Me Boo colors from Misti, come back and check out our website later this month.
What about the House colors you ask?! Don't fret! Our Shepherd Sock Sorting Hat Kit is still available. There has been an overwhelming response to the colors inspired by the Hogwarts Houses, so we couldn't help but keep them on for one more month! And if you are looking for a little more hand-dyed inspiration, don't forget our catalog, the Hand-Dye Issue! We still have plenty of copies available to send out to the knitting universe, so don't hesitate to contact us for your own. |

Blue Sky Alpacas
Get ready for fall with Blue Sky Alpacas! They have just released their incredibly classy fall line - including brand new patterns and even a brand new line of yarn, called Techno. With an oh-so sumptuous blend of 68% baby alpaca, 10% extra fine merino, and 22% silk, you know this yarn is going to be squishy soft and light as a feather. Translation: an absolute dream to knit with! What you might not know about this yarn is the innovative process that is used to make it! The baby alpaca is actually blown through a mesh tube of silk which gives a wonderful halo effect to this heavy worsted weight yarn. This process also makes for fast knitting with little to no splitting! What could be any better? Well, perhaps a well-rounded color palette could seal the deal! Techno arrives in six beautiful neutral colors, as well as seven eye-popping neon shades!
Of course, there is more than enough pattern support to show off this marvellous yarn. From the whimsical Cafe Beret and modish Graphic Pullover to the sporty Metro Jacket and lacy Thea's Pullover, you'll love knitting Techno up in these modern yet classy designs!
Blue Sky didn't just stop there! They also released a gorgeous array of new knitting patterns for some of your favorite BSA yarns. Some are simple and easy to knit, such as the go-with-anything Autumn Vest while others are a bit more elegant, but dreamily designed like the Bella Wrap. Be sure to check them all out!
As many of you might already know, Blue Sky Alpacas also distributes their sister company, Spud and Chloe who also just came out with brand new patterns and colors in all of their available weights: Fine, Outer, and the classic Sweater! I particularly love the cabled socks pattern, but you know there will be something for everyone in the family!

Kollage Square Crochet Hooks Needles $13.00
We love being comfortable, especially when we're crocheting! So, of course we had to start carrying these ergonomically designed Square Crochet Hooks by Kollage! These hand-saving hooks are exquisitely handcrafted with a lovely rosewood handle and a lightening-fast aluminum hook (although not so slippery that you'll be dropping your stitches)! A few Beans in our shop have crocheted with these hooks and really do say they decrease stress and strain on those hands - perfect for those crocheters with arthritis, carpal tunnel, or just plain stiffness in the joints!
Now that you have a tool that will allow you to crochet for hours on end, why not try it out on Spud and Chloe's newest Seeing Stars Blanket!
Spud & Chloe Patterns - Seeing Stars Blanket $7.00
Although we really don't see ourselves outfitting a bed in a bowling alley any time soon--as the picture suggests--all of us in the shop absolutely fell head over heels for the hexagonal Seeing Stars Blanket, knit out of Sweater yarn. The pattern includes instructions for four sizes to fit any whim: Lap, Twin, Full, and Queen. Plus, the hexagons are joined as you go, making it a bit less of a daunting task. A good tip is to crochet over the strands as you go so you don't have to weave in hundreds of ends after you finish!

Just the other week, all of the Beans got together for our own "Harry Potter" inspired send-off for our very special Bean, Ailene (who coincidentally wrote the introduction to this newsletter). It would be an understatement to say that Ailene loves both the Harry Potter books and movies, so we all dressed up in Hogwarts House colors for a fantastic going-away party. There were cupcakes, jellybeans, gifts, and laughter as we all wanted to send off our magical, spectacular co-worker in style. Ailene will be studying abroad in China for the fall semester and we will miss her dearly! She's definitely carved out a special niche here in the shop and - not to be cheesy or anything - in all of our hearts! We love you Ailene and hope you have the best of adventures in the far East!
