Give the gift of knitting this year! Whether you're expanding your own knitting skills or helping to create the next generation of knitters, this video is a great teaching tool! In just over four minutes, our very own "knitting guru", Jeanne, reviews the simple steps of English-style knitting! As one of the more common knitting techniques, English-style knitting is characterized by carrying the yarn in your right hand and then "throwing" or wrapping the yarn around your needle to create a stitch. If you are using this video to aid in teaching a new knitter, you will probably be reviewing how to cast on. You can find a video on knitting English style (plus a whole lot more!) on our website... just in case you need an extra visual!
1. Once you have cast on, hold the needle with the cast on stitches in your LEFT hand and the empty needle and yarn in your RIGHT hand.
2. Put the tip of your right needle through the first stitch on your left needle entering from front to back.
3. Tension your yarn with your right hand. This can be done a variety of ways and depends on what feels most comfortable to you. As you can see Jeanne likes to loop hers around her fingers. I prefer just weaving the yarn between my fingers.
4. Making sure your yarn is behind your needles, bring it up, around and over your right needle.
5. Next bring your right needle through the stitch on your left needle maintaing needle-on-needle contact. This helps keep the new stitch on your right needle.
6. Finally slip the stitch you have just knit into off of your left needle. Congratulations! You just knit English Style!
7. Repeat steps 4-7 until run out of stitches on your left needle. You may have to "re-tension" your yarn several times while knitting one row, but not every stitch. This method may seem awkward at first, but once you've got it down projects will be flying off your needles!

Need some inspiration for all of the great yarn that will be up for grabs this weekend? There are a bunch of new books that have just arrived in our shop, featuring your favorite knitwear designers and Rowan yarns! My favorite has to be Touching Elegance by Kim Hargreaves! Featuring rustic, simple coloring with a defined emphasis on texture, these 21 gorgeous designs make for a unique collection of bohemian chic. Kim Hargreaves has been such a busy gal (lucky us!) that she's also released a second book, Cherished. Brimming with rural-inspired knits and catering to those of us who love cozy, comfortable, yet stylish sweaters (who doesn't?), it's no wonder this book has been flying out the door!

Trendsetter is known for their unique and funky yarns and the brand new Flamenco definitely fits the bill! By knitting along the top edge of this flouncy ribbon yarn, the net-like Flamenco opens up to about 3 inches which creates beautiful, cloud-like ruffles. If you're a fan of the oh-so-popular Cha-Cha yarn, you'll absolutely adore Flamenco! Looking for fun and trendy patterns using this delightful new yarn? Check out the Flamenco Pattern Booklet as you may just find your next must-knit project!
Full of knitting articles and fabulous patterns, the Winter 2010 Issue of Interweave Knits has page after page of knitspiration! I've already fallen in love with the casually classic Isobel Skirt knit with Manos Silk Blend...a perfect project to knit up for myself once all of this Christmas madness is over! Of course, there are also some great hats, scarves, and gloves in addition to several spectacular pullovers and cardigans for staying warm and in style during these chilly months! One of my favorite sweaters in this issue has to be the unique Prism Pullover that is knit using Bamboo Ewe, an all-natural yarn from Stitch Nation. If you need a project that only takes a few evenings to complete (last minute Christmas gift?!), try the Kinetic Cowl. This chic neck-warmer only takes one hank of the soft, self-striping Opus 1 from Zitron and is finished in a flash on size US 9 needles!
A new pattern has arrived from Never Not Knitting! The Autumn Vines Beret is a timeless design featuring an intricate stitch pattern that creates a unique relief of leafy, intertwining vines. Not only is this pattern a treat for your fingers to knit, it is a fashionable accessory and makes a beautiful gift! Knit with around 200 yards of any DK weight yarn, Autumn Leaves looks spectacular whether you use a hand-dyed fiber like Madelinetosh's Pashmina or solid colorways such as Fresco from Classic Elite.
Mirasol's Ushya is my kind of yarn! Splendiferously soft and super bulky, Ushya knits up in no time on size US 15 needles. The finger-pleasing merino and nylon bnge of projects. Use one 100g skein (114 yards) for a chunky hat, scarf or cowl -the ideal choice for quick gifts! Ushya comes in a friendly palette of classic solids that will compliment any winter outfit! If you're searching for the perfect project using Ushya, be sure to take a peek at the Ushya Pattern Book from Mirasol! I can just imagine curling up with my knitting during a winter storm wearing either one of these snuggly sweaters!
Best-selling author, Vicki Square, pays special tribute to the ancient Japanese aesthetic of Kimono design and colorwork in her latest book, Knit Kimono Too. Traditionally, kimonos are designed to act as a reflection of nature, which is achieved by layering specific patterns and colors found in the natural world. Square does a fantastic job of retaining these Japanese design principles to the foundation of her pieces, while adding her own modern twist, creating truely unique and fascinating pieces! This book features over 20 patterns of not only kimonos but lightweight tops, tanks, tunics and more! The book also includes an instructional DVD featuring Vicki Square demonstrating everything from surface embroidery to two-stranded colorwork. Whether you're hoping to pick up a few tips or take your knitting to the next level, Knit Kimono Too is an excellent resource!
New from Ilga Leja, the Tundra Cowl pattern looks spectacular and keeps your shoulders, neck and head warm too! Here are a few of the colors we have in stock this week:
The Madeline Tosh yarn has caused a real stir around the shop and Sandy had to jump in by knitting up the Poet Society Tam out of the Tosh Vintage yarn. She said the pattern was super easy to follow and the yarn was scrumptious! She used 2 special buttons from her button collection that have acorns and oak leaves on them which finished the tam off perfectly. The design looks more challenging that it really is and you can wear this tam with everything in your wardrobe!
Bethany is one of our newest knitters around the shop and she is amazing! Her regular mode of fiber consumption is with a crochet hook, but she has taken to knitting really well! She does have an interesting style as she knits from left to right since she taught herself to knit and is a true lefty! She has learned during this sweater project that she twists her purl stitches, but it is so lovely that she decided to continue doing so throughout the project as her special design element. She is working up a small for herself and vows to make one for her sweetie George soon!
Amber would tell you she's not really a knitter, but I beg to differ as she is currently working on 3 knitting projects at once and is doing a wonderful job! This is her All Day Beret project and the color in the Stitch Nation Bamboo Ewe yarn she chose is amazing (5520 Eucalyptus). The yarn of course is super yummy and she says that the pattern is very easy to follow and of course it can be found for free on the stitch nation website!
One of our great in-store customers, Jana, has been knitting up a storm and she wore her finished 34 Raglan Jacket from the Winter 08/09 issue of Vogue Knitting Magazine and all we could say was "Wow"! This great jacket works up on super big yarn and she used the pattern suggested Soft Chunky Twinkle yarn which worked perfectly. The project uses US 15, 17 and 19 needles so what's not to love? The yarn is wonderfully soft and Jana said the pattern was a dream to work up. Her sweater is a small size and we all think the color is an excellent match for her bubbly personality!
Sandy is naughty not nice and so she decided she would knit up a hat that reflected that, ha ha! Okay Sandy is really the nicest and the hat Knotty But Nice is a lovely free pattern from Knitty.com! She is using the Cascade 220 super wash yarn and we are all really impressed with the results! Sandy says that the pattern is very well written and is working up quickly. You can find the pattern at knitty.com!
In search of a quick holiday gift Jeanne jumped into the One-Skein Wonders 101 Designer book for these adorable fingerless mitts! The pattern is super easy and clear cut and she is using some sock yarn from her stash to work these up. She decided to make her finger ribbing a bit longer than that pattern calls for and also did so for the thumb. Jeanne says this pattern is a dream come true for that last minute gift that we all have to work up from time to time!
Christmas is coming and Sharon is in love with the Stitch Nation 100% wool Full O Sheep yarn. She wanted to work up Knitting Pure and Simple's Stocking pattern, 277 and it is coming along wonderfully! Since this is a worsted weight yarn she is using needles that make the project just fly and is almost ready to turn her heel! Way to go Sharon, this is going to be a great gift!
