July is the perfect month to celebrate all things American with the 4th exclusive color in our Tailor-made Tosh series, Americana Style! You may be wondering, just what is Americana style? Well, we think it's the kind of style that makes Americans unique from one part of the country to the other. For some, it might be a plain white tee-shirt, Wranglers, and your favorite dusty pair of cowboy boots, for others it might be cut-offs, a tank top, and flip-flops. Whatever your Americana style, one thing is for sure, there is nothing more quintessentially American than wearing a bit of red, white, and blue!
This colorway features a muted (think vintage US flag) palette of this trio of colors in all of your favorite Tosh yarns! To go along with this colorway, Spark has created a special Americana set of stitch markers in red, white and blue with a cute little star charm to round out the collection. Celebrate America, and the unique styles that go with it, with this month's Tailor-made Limited Edition color from Madelinetosh!

With this weekend's Stitch Mountain Rowan Retreat kicking off on Friday, we couldn't help but take a little time to wax poetic about one of the first brands of yarn we ever carried! In fact, Rowan Big Wool is the first product group we ever added to our inventory system, and it's still active to this day! So without further ado, here are the top 5 reasons we love Rowan!
- Rowan yarns are eternally classic, which explains why so many have like Big Wool, Kidsilk Haze, Felted Tweed, and Handknit Cotton (among others) never seem to go out of style.
- Rowan yarns are super high-quality and make great stash staples. Over the years, many of us here at JBW have kept a healthy dose of Rowan in our stashes - often a sweater's worth or more! Even after these colors and yarns are long discontinued, they continue to be some of our most coveted favorites (and often elicit stash-envy from others).
- Rowan designs are timeless. From Rowan's twice-yearly magazine to their spectacular collections of pattern books (like the popular new Windswept Collection!) released bi-annually for Spring and Fall featuring designs from greats like Kaffe Fassett, Sarah Hatton, Martin Storey, and Marie Wallin, you are sure to find something you'll love!
- Rowan's color palettes are simply stunning! From great basics with broad color palettes (like Pure Wool Worsted or Kidsilk Haze) to seasonal yarns with tighter yet versatile palettes (such as All Seasons Chunky or Lima), their colors span a range of shades while still creating a cohesive collection.
- Rowan's commitment to tradition is unwavering. While constantly innovating and outdoing themselves, Rowan stays true to its roots. Their traditionally spun tweeds (like Rowan Tweed, Rowan Tweed Aran, and Rowan Fine Tweed) are produced in one of the few surviving mills in Yorkshire, and their British Sheep Breeds yarns (available in DK and Chunky) feature undyed fiber from strictly British breeds of sheep!

Venezia Worsted and Venezia Sport are both a lustrous blend of merino wool and silk that yields a soft texture with great stitch definition, an elegant sheen, and a graceful drape. The patterns in 60 Quick Luxury Knits take advantage of these amazing qualities, transposing this scrumptious yarn into shawls, hats, gloves, mitts, cowls, scarves and more! | Rauma Finullgarn - 484 $8.50 | Love a good sheepy yarn? Then Rauma Finullgarn is for you! You might recognize this beauty from the Rauma Flower Pots... And now you can get it by the skein! This sport weight Norwegian wool is pill-resistant, has a firm hand, and is great for knitting or felting. However, Rauma's defining feature is its versatility for colorwork. Available in a range of colors, there's bound to be a palette for your tastes. Grab a copy of Fair Isle Style and jump right in to all the wooly goodness Rauma has to offer! | Francine Toukou Patterns - Sage & Beige $7.00 | Crocheters, take note of these fabulous designs from Francine Toukou! With their classic aesthetic and vintage feel, this line of patterns is chock full of everyday basics from slippers to scarves. We particularly like the versatility of the Little Red Riding Cowl and think it would look great in one of the gorgeous reds in Tosh Vintage (we like Tart or Scarlet, or Sun Rose for something truly unique). Or work up the simple yet sophisticated Chillmark Scarf in your favorite cozy worsted weight yarn. It's a quick project featuring classic rib stitching that resembles knitting. Grab your hook and get crocheting! |

This month, we wanted to highlight some great new kits using free patterns from the Rowan website in some of our all-time favorite Rowan yarns. Topping the list of favorites is Rowan Lima, a squishy sofks gorgeous in the all-over texture pattern of the Biscay cardigan. Pure Wool Worsted is another perennial favorite because of its easy care and full range of colors, making it a no-brainer for a variety of projects. Everything from home accessories like the Diamond Cushion to fashion accessories such as the Boyds Bag look great in Pure Wool Worsted, not to mention machine washable baby garments like the Buckthorn Cardigan! Not to be outdone, Cocoon's subtle halo from the wool mohair combo leaves us breathless. Crocheters will love it in the Crochet Cowl Neck pullover and its interesting waist detailing, while knitters will fall for the all-over cable patterning of the Wight pullover. Another favorite in the shop is Felted Tweed, beloved for its rustic texture and varied color palette, both of which are shown off beautifully in the fair-isle Stroma legwarmers. Too warm to think about knitting sweaters and wooly socks? Look no further than Kidsilk Haze, which is a great choice for lightweight accessories like the airy Adele Gloves. Whatever the season or project, we've got tons of Rowan kits to keep your needles and hooks busy! |

Sara's Hitofude Cardigan | Sara saw our post about this pattern on Facebook and immediately brought her gorgeous finished cardigan in to show off! She knit her version in Tosh Mo Light in Jade (Tosh Mohair Light, a special edition only available directly from Tosh, similar to Tosh Merino Light but with a little mohair added in), and since the original pattern calls for Tosh Merino Light, it was a perfect fit! For a summery version, you could also use Tosh's new yarn, Dandelion, which has just a touch of linen. Sara said that the pattern is really well written and has a unique and intuitive construction that allows for knitting the garment all in one piece! The Hitofude Cardigan pattern can be purchased as a PDF directly from the designer on Ravelry. Nice work, Sara! |
Jenny's Baby Lush Cardigan | Jenny recently knit the baby version of the Lush Cardigan from Tin Can Knit's Handmade in the UK book. Here is what she said about the project:
"This was a really quick and satisfying knit. I couldn't be happier with the way it turned out! The pattern was very well written and easy to follow, resulting in an adorable wee cardigan for my friends little babe. Tosh DK is, like always, a dream to knit with and Courbet's Green is the perfect springtime/summer colorway. The Dragonfly Buttons are from Renaissance & Blue Moon Buttons and they just arrived to the shop this past week or so. They have a silver finish and they are just perfect for this sweater, and just in time, too! No modifications to the pattern. I used regular t-pins to block the lace panel and I cast off all of the edges with size 5 needles." |
Baby Olive's Yoked Cardigan | Kristen's mom, Ellen, made this Knitbot's Yoked Cardigan was knit with just one skein of Tosh Merino in Napoli (a discontinued color that is similar to Citrus.) The cute vintage turquoise colored buttons came from Kristen's personal button stash. Ellen says that this little knit was a fun and quick project that is super simple for an advanced beginner level knitter! |
Baby Olive's 'In Threes' Cardi | Diana knit this adorable little baby cardigan in Tosh Vintage for Kristen's impending arrival, Olive. She made it to match Kristen's Tea Leaves Cardigan that she knit in the same color of Tosh Vintage several years ago. The result is absolutely adorable, and Kristen can't wait to wear her sweater to match with Olive's this coming winter! The In Threes Baby and Kids Cardigan can be purchased as a PDF directly from the designer on Ravelry. |
