Ruffle yarn seems to be all the rage this season, as many of you are preparing for the spring and summer months ahead. Although it has been snowing like crazy here in the high desert, several of our Beans have already started to bring out their lightweight yarns, in hopes of a knitting "spring dance" that just might bring out the sun! Jeanne, especially, has been gearing up for warmer days and was so curious about all of the ruffle yarn that has been flying out of our doors lately that she grabbed a skein of Katia Flounce yarn. Finding it a little tricky to knit with, she created this simple step-by-step instructional video on how to use this type of unique ruffle yarn! This knitting instructional video applies to any of our fun ruffle yarns we have to offer: Katia's Triana, Trendsetter's Flamenco, or Rozetti's Marina.
1. To begin, pull apart your ruffle yarn for about a foot or so in order to prepare for casting on and knitting.
2. Cast on by weaving your right hand needle through the ruffle yarn along the edge. You can determine the length of the interval between weaving-the longer the interval, the more pronounced of a ruffle you'll achieve. For this demonstration, Jeanne chose one inch of an interval between weavings and cast on six stitches. She cast on ten stitches for her scarf found on the project log.
3. Turn your project around to start the second row. Knit through as normal. There is no need to go needle to needle; instead, you can place your working needle in any "mesh" about an inch away from your first stitch. Wrap the yarn through and knit.
4. Since your cast-on row was woven, the next stitch will be twisted. Twist the stitch back and knit through. These twisted stitches will be every other stitch so repeat as needed. Since your cast on row was woven, you will only have to worry about twisted stitches for this row.
5. Woo-Hoo! You just completed your first two rows of your ruffle scarf! Now that you're a ruffle extraordinaire, continue knitting away until you get to your desired length.

Horizontal Rib Hat
Berroco Sox Horizontal Rib Hat Was $13.00 to $31.95 Now from $10.40 to $25.56 (up to 20% off!)
|
For most of the country, winter isn't quite over yet-no matter how much we want it to be! So, we thought this would be the perfect time to make this great transitional knit, the Horizontal Rib Hat, as our featured kit of the month! Composed of simple garter and stockinette stitches, this knit is great for any skill level. You'll have it done in no time so you can get to wearing it for these last chilly weeks ahead.
Just because its getting warmer doesn't mean you have to stop wearing this hat, either! This hat is going to be my go-to knit for all of those camping and backpack outings I have planned for high up in the mountains this summer. I can already see myself wearing this around the campfire, making myself up a bowl of chili. Mmmm... Of course, at 20% off, it's easy to think of a million and one ways I can wear this hat!

In our previous newsletter, we introduced a sneak peak of the brand new Spring 2011 Lorna's Laces colors. Now that we have all of the colors in stock and in every weight, we wanted to give them a proper introduction!
The "Shenanigans" collection is the embodiment of the careless frivolity of spring and summer-the mischievous rabbits nibbling on your lettuce, the levity of birds and butterflies in flight, and the seemingly endless capers of spring days mingling with lingering frosts.
|
|
Shenanigans is the "namesake" color of the collection. The earthy shades of dark chocolate and rich gold are making me anxious to get my hands back in the soil while the cobalt blue and dark greens hearken to tiny sprouts and the blue skies of summertime! This is the perfect color for those Knitting Pure & Simple hiking boot socks I've been planning to make for my dad for Father's Day. Especially, since only two hanks of the Shepherd Worsted will get the job done!
|
Shenanigans $23.00
|
Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock - Hullabaloo $23.00 |
Speaking of colors reminiscent of sprouts and emerging buds, Hullabaloo is next up in the new Lorna's color line-up! A spectacular arrangement of light greens, pale yellows, and just a hint of cerulean blue, this color is perfect for a whimsical pick-me-up scarf. I know I'm a wimp when it comes to indoor air-conditioning in the summertime and always have a scarf on hand when I'm going to the movies. One skein of the Shepherd Sock in Hullabaloo will be more than enough to make up Churchmouse's Barb's Koigu Ruffle Scarf, light enough to carry around in my purse when I don't need it!
|
|
Monkeyshines is a chic amalgamation of light tans and greys, stunning ivory, and elegant golds. Inspired by an emerging shift in home decor towards a more neutral palette of greys and golds, the gals at Lorna's came up with this polished and graceful color, perfect for sophisticated knits and crocheted garments to show off on romantic summery nights. Aileene loves this color in Helen's Lace and is contemplating knitting up the Wispy Cardigan by KnitBot in it! She'll only need one skein to make it, too!
|
Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock - Monkeyshines $23.00
|
Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock - Tomfoolery $23.00 |
The brightest color of this collection is, by far, Tomfoolery, designed for the "inner child" in all of us. A fantastical concoction of radiant magenta, flaring yellows, and a splash of dazzling oranges and golds, Tomfoolery is the perfect color choice for those mischievous ones in your life. I know just the girl who's going to be receiving this adorable Sundress by Knitting Pure & Simple, done with only two skeins of the Shepherd Worsted, with a little bit left over to make a matching hat!
|
|
Last but certainly not least, is Kerfuffle, a gorgeous semi-solid color of rich purple, deep grey, and just a spalsh of dark ocean blue that makes my mouth water everytime I see it. I'm reminded of those plump plums that are just waiting to be eaten off of my tree in the summer months ahead. This is the perfect color choice for light-weight cardigans and sweaters, such as the Ravinia Cardigan by Indiegirl. Shown in Shepherd Sport in the Kerfuffle color, you can see just how spectacular this blend works up!
|
Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock - Kerfuffle $23.00
|
No matter which color you choose, you're bound to find your next favorite Lorna's Laces color! Each colorway is available in the following weights:
Helen's Lace, Lion and Lamb, Shepherd Sock, Shepherd Sport, and Shepherd Worsted.

Universal & Rozetti Yarns
Universal Yarns is the latest addition to our Jimmy Beans family and we're so excited to start carrying these fashion-forward gems! Hailing from Jimmy's hometown state of North Carolina, Universal Yarns is an incredibly friendly company geared towards bringing high-quality yet affordable yarns of exceptional beauty, color, and softness. Not to mention, they have a fabulous array of fashionable pattern support to boot. Their motto is "Knit, Relax, Smile. Repeat!" and I couldn't agree more, especially now that I'm able to see and touch all of their yarns in person!
Classic Shades is a wonderful blend of acrylic and wool that is both soft to the touch and pleasing to the eye. With a generous 197 yards to a ball, this worsted weight yarn is more than enough for a fun one-skein hat or scarf. Be sure to check out the great variety of self-striping color-ways that are available. Plus, since its machine washable, how can you possibly go wrong?
Beautiful yarn is, of course, backed up by an awesome array of patterns for the entire family! The Mountain Shades Pullover is a fun experimentation with geometry and self-striping colors, while the Gatsby Gal pattern is a three-in-one hat, cowl, and scarf set with a unique cabled design featured on all three!
The really neat pattern book, Classic Shades Kids, is geared towards patterns for toddlers up to teens. The Henley Hoodie is a perfect quick knit to get off your needles and onto your favorite little one in no time! While The Cool Kid Cardi may be the answer to that fussy teenager who refuses to wear anything you want to make them! This pattern also includes women's sizing so you can make your own to match!
Aside from Classic Shades, we also have two yarns distributed by Universal Yarns from a smaller yarn manufacturer, Rozetti. Marina is the newest ruffle yarn in our line-up, offering a fun and bright palette of variegated hues. I particularly love the color Carnivale, it's just too fun not to pass up on knitting up a scarf in this colorway!
Universal Yarns has provided a great amount of free patterns on their website with this yarn and, of course, we had to make some kits up for you! Be sure to check out the One-Skein Scarf, as well as the Cakewalk Scarf for some fabulously fun ideas!
Soft Payette is another unique yarn brought to you by Rozetti. An acrylic and polyester blend, this DK weight yarn actually has sparkling sequins already knit into the fiber! All you have to do is find that perfect project and start knitting away! Of course, there's more than enough free patterns to get your inspiration rolling such as the fun and fresh Beach Sarong and the elegant Feather and Fan shawl. Be sure to check out the Seagrass pattern, as well, which showcases a few different ways you can pair this yarn with other fibers.

Prism Yarns Cool Stuff Half Hank $52.00
|
I can't help but love Prism's funky take on colors and adventurous fiber fusions so, of course, I was giddy as a schoolgirl as soon as I knew we were carrying Cool Stuff and Wild Stuff. It's hard not to feel inspired with the rotating blend of color and fiber-grab a half hank of Wild Stuff or Cool Stuff for a frolicking scarf or hat or knit up a full one for an inviting wrap that will instantly be the talk of the town. What's the difference between the two? Besides from color choices, Cool Stuff is composed of non-animal fiber sources for the more sensitive knitters, while Wild Stuff offers wool, alpaca, and mohair blends.

Here's a tiny sampling of our handiwork this month...!! Click on any of the thumbnails to take a closer look or check out all of our projects!
Chunky Scarf | Once Prism's Nobori for a deliciously striped scarf! Sandy used her own pattern: Cast on three stitches, increase right and left until it's the width you want. Knit straight for length and decrease at the beginning of each row! |
Sandy's Wild Stuff & Touch Me Shawl | Sandy was more than happy to model her Wild Stuff and Touch Me Shawl for us the other day! She used one full hank of the Wild Stuff for the body and one ball of Muench Touch Me for the fringe and this eye-popping shawl was the talk of the shop for the entire day! With Wild Stuff's fun rotation of different fibers such as mohair and wool and the variegated nature of the color blends, Sandy had a blast knitting this shawl up! She used her own pattern but no fear! It was really easy: Cast on twenty stitches. Increase the 1st stitch on each side as you go until you run out! With the Touch Me, she did the crab stitch around the top and added fringe at the bottom! |
Kathy's Annabella's Cowl | Kathy made this gorgeous Annabella's Cowl for her mother-in-law and it turned out great! She actually finished this cowl up at our team meeting last week and we had to interrupt Laura in the middle to applaud her efforts! :-] Kathy doesn't think she's particularly creative but I think her unique combination for this cowl proves differently! Using one hank of squishy Lorna's Laces Honor in Charcoal and one ball of Lana Grossa's Chiara in Lime, this cowl is super soft due to the Honor and full of glitter and shine because of the Chiara! She also shortened the length of the cowl so it wouldn't be too droopy! |
Zapata Hat | One of our customers from New York, Claudia, made this gorgeous hat for her significant other, Barry. The pattern is called Zapata and it is found in Jenny Watson's book Mirasol Designer Mini Knits. What a versatile hat that could be made for any gender or age! Using only two hanks of Mirasol's Miski, Claudia knit this cabled beauty up in no time! I hope Barry appreciates it just as much as we do! |
Botanic Hat | I found this really neat reversible beanie to knit for my boyfriend by none other than Stephen West and bought a skein each of two different colors of the Malabrigo Rios since its machine washable. When I downloaded the pattern, I kind of thought it was going to be above my skill level but so far it's very simple! You just alternate the colors every row and slip a purl stitch on the CC color to make the ribs pop on the outside. |
Fair-Isle Kenning Mitts | Once I saw these fingerless gloves, I immediately fell in love! I've never even done fair-isle before but once I cast on I realized how easy it is-as long as you pay attention that is! The pattern originally called for a DK weight but since I LOVE variegated yarns, I thought it would be really neat to have the leaves and flowers as a color changing yarn. Plus, I have freakishly small hands. I chose two colors of the Mini Mochi by Crystal Palace paired with a Mini Solid in white. I decided to stay at a US 2 since I do have such small hands-so I'd suggest going up a size or two if you want to use a fingering weight yarn. |
Mara Shawl | It's finished! We've all been admiring Kristen's latest creation that she's been wearing around the shop. The Mara Shawl is a free pattern found on Madelinetosh's website and Kristen switched out the Tosh Worsted for Tosh Merino Light instead. She used the color Posy and US 5 circulars and...wow! I keep thinking that Mother's Day is coming up and I know my mom would love one of these in Wisteria! |
Amber's Helmet Liner | Once Sandy showed up to work with one of these Helmet Liners that she knit for Nicole's husband, CJ who is in the army, Amber knew it would be the perfect gift for her now fiance! She was finished in no time at all and this helmet liner has kept him warm even on the coldest of nights while he's jetting around on his scooter. A free pattern found here: Knitted Helmet Liner, you could make one for those who ride bicycles, ski, or any outdoor activity that will keep his/her head warm since it fits both genders just fine! Or, make a few and send to the address listed on the site to give to much deserving soldiers! |
Waves of Leaves | Victoria has done it again! Falling in love with the February Lorna's Limited Edition color, Festival of Love, she grabbed two skeins of the Honor and started knitting away. She chose the Waves of Leaves shawl pattern found on Ravelry.com and wow! It's one of the softest shawls I've touched and the design really makes the colors pop! |
Sawyer's Hat | How adorable is this?! This pictures goes to show that Huck's More Than One Size Earflap Hat is truely a design for all ages...from adults to itty bitty babies! One of our customers, Dorothy, sent us this oh-so-cute photo of her finished Huck's Hat for her grandson, Sawyer. She knit this hat up using only one skein of the Misti Alpaca's Landscape Collection, in the colorway Pride Rock. |
