You know we're all about drama and fun, so with Halloween coming up (not to mention costume parties galore!), what would be more fitting for our Micro-Brewed Series than a Steampunk theme? In case you're not up on your sci-fi/fantasy subgenres, Steampunk is all about reimagining the future as Jules Verne or H.G. Wells might have seen it: steam-powered locomotives, a Victorian aesthetic mixed with Wild West themes, and above all (and perhaps what we value most), an affinity for anything handmade! Still not sure what this has to do with yarn? Make a quick search of "steampunk" on Ravelry, and you'll find over 400 project ideas - and counting! A couple of our faves are the Sokol Mitts and the Thrumviator Hat; even once Halloween is over, they're still perfect for fashionable winter wear! So, hold onto your analytical engines, put on your best bib and tucker, and bend an elbow for some of these refreshing brews! Full steam ahead! |

| We're thrilled to have Seattle-based indie-dyer darling Hazel Knits on tap for this month's brew session: Kristen met them at VK Live Seattle a few years ago, and has been looking for an opportunity to work with them ever since! Their drool-worthy Entice base, a delicious, fingering-weight blend of merino, cashmere, and nylon, was just what we were thirsting for, and the color couldn't be more gorgeous! Cobalt Coal is a deep and dark tonal blue that pays homage to the mother of steam: coal power! |
And this month's sister color at Loops, called Bronze Balloon, is a perfect, warm-toned partner for that cool blue! It looks fantastic in the Riverbed Shawlette by Grace Akhrem, and even better along with Cobalt Coal in the 2-color Baja Sunset Shawl - just $1 on Ravelry until the end of the month! Emma's already knitting her own version... Check it out!

| Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Solstice Yarn is no stranger to the Steampunk surge of recent years; as soon as they heard our theme, they knew what to do! They went to the dye pots to whip up a vivid and vivacious ruby-red shade called Crimson Peak, inspired by the new Victorian-era Guillermo del Toro thriller of the same name! |
It's absolutely luminous on the Etoile base, a beautifully soft blend of silk and camel fibers in a DK weight. Leanne chose it for an exceptionally luxurious Volga Cowl, and many of the Beans have been eyeing it with envy! One skein would also make a stunning rust-hued version of Chris's Elsa shawl, a FREE pattern on Ravelry! The incomparable sheen of this delicious yarn would make any project special!

| Forbidden Woolery (don't you just love the name?!?), based in Burbank, CA, came to us highly recommended by a customer here in Reno, and we're glad they did! We knew they were true Steampunk fans as soon as we saw their colorway: Midnight Spats! Dyed on the Pride base, a 2-ply fingering weight blend of merino wool and nylon with just a hint of sparkle, this deep, rich color draws the eye like a coal seam imbued with glittery diamond dust! |
We think it would be perfect for a pair of Spats Socks, a FREE pattern by Kate Poe on Ravelry or the Starshower Cowl by the Yarniad! And, in case you just can't keep your hands off this stunning color... check out the Forbidden Woolery website for more of their covet-worthy yarns!!
