It's getting hot in here... so pick up your needles and a fresh batch of this month's Tasty Tosh 2015 color: Roasted Hatch Chiles! A staple of New Mexico cuisine, the Hatch Chile is also a favorite in our kitchens - the subtle heat of the fresh green variety adds the perfect kick to stews, Southwestern dishes, and especially some delicious Green Chile Cornbread! Roasting brings out the flavor even more, and Madelinetosh has captured the colors of tasty roasted peppers perfectly in this month's color: shades of mouthwatering green blend beautifully with toasty browns to evoke the singular look, smell, and taste of peppers gently charred over an open flame. We can hardly wait to get our hot little hands on some! We have it in Pashmina, Tosh DK, Tosh Merino Light, Tosh Sock, Tosh Vintage, Twist Light, and TML Samples, ready to spice up your next project! | To get you as excited to cast on as we are, Kristen reworked her Cloud Forest Cowl in Tosh DK, and the leafy design looks right at home in this gorgeous green hue! It takes just one hank and knits up quickly into a medium-weight, close-fitting neckwarmer to keep the fall chills at bay. It's free with purchase of one hank of Tosh DK in the Roasted Hatch Chiles color, or just $1 on Ravelry all month long! |
To join our Southwestern celebration, Black Rock Mud has created an equally tasty-looking soap to go along with this month's theme! Valley of Fire is layered to look like the incredible land formations in the Valley of Fire State Park, a national landmark and the oldest state park in Nevada. Fittingly, the scent is peppery, musky, and like our favorite chiles, absolutely addictive!

We have not one, but two more reasons to be excited about Madelinetosh yarn this month: new Tosh colors for fall, and a brand new base! Although we're sad to see the recently discontinued colors go (we'll miss you, Forestry and Betty Draper's Blues!) we're thrilled with the new ones - all twelve of them! The photo above captures all of the new shades in Tosh Merino Light, so without further ado, from left to right we have: Spicewood, Neon Red, Prairie Fire, Penumbra, Coal Seam, Cloud Dweller, Dustweaver, Filtered Light, Birch Grey, Court & Spark, Flycatcher Blue, and Mill Pond. | Now we just have to decide what to knit! It didn't take Kristen long; she loved the Dustweaver color so much, she jumped right to her needles and created the Slippery Slope Hat, a fun and chunky hat with a slipped stitch pattern that uses just one skein of Madelinetosh ASAP. Kristen is offering this new design for purchase in her Ravelry store! |
On top of all these delicious new colors, we have another reason to shout from the hilltops: new Madelinetosh Silk/Merino has arrived! This delightful DK-weight 50/50 blend of mulberry silk and superwash merino is as delicious to hold as it is to behold - the silk gives those gorgeous Madelinetosh colors even more of a beautiful sheen and lightens the feel of the wool, making it perfect for drapey garments and soft accessories worn next to the skin.
| We're already planning projects with it, starting with one of Hunter Hammersen's Curls! The simple textured pattern in the Gridelin Curl would look fabulous in any of the striking new colorways! If you go all out and get a sweater quantity (and believe us, this is a splurge-worthy yarn!) the Knitting Pure and Simple Top-Down Trapeze Pullover would be heavenly in this soft and drapey fabric. |
Or, for a short and sweet project with a guaranteed-gorgeous result, knit the Autumn Vines Beret from Never Not Knitting - you'll be done and receiving compliments before you can say "let's go apple-picking!"! |

You know you're an (unapologetically) addicted crafter when you plan your projects an entire season ahead... but who's judging? We're certainly not - after all, fall is the best time for knitting and crocheting fever to set in, because you can wear all of your finished objects right away (except in the Southern Hemisphere...sorry, guys, you'll just have to dry your tears on your beach towels and laugh at us up here in the cold!)!
We've got some kits all made up and ready to ship out to get you in the mood for cold-weather knitting and crocheting!
| Just as soon as Erika brought hers into the shop, we all had to have one, and you will, too: we're talking about the Churchmouse Crocheted 'Linen Stitch' Scarf and Loop! This brilliant pattern uses as special crochet stitch that mimics the look of knitted linen stitch, resulting in a beautiful, mosaic-tile-like scarf or cowl that will show off the gorgeous, hand-dyed Misti Alpaca Hand Paint Sock perfectly! |
| Right on time for choosing your take-along summer vacation knitting, we've made up new kits for Rachel's gorgeous Ripple Effect Shawl in some of our exclusive, just-at-Jimmy's Limited Edition Tosh colorways! Choose from the Tosh Merino Light Bouquets or the Yarn and Pattern Kits in Chicory, Kitten, Fir Wreath, and Turtle to sample some of the delicious past Tasty Tosh flavors! Both the bouquets and kits include the 3 skeins of yarn needed for this stunningly striped shawl, plus a download code for the pattern. |
| Who says you can't sport a scarf in summer? Inspired by the gorgeous colors of Madelinetosh Prairie Short Skeins and the look of long and loopy cowls, Heather designed the Blueshift Loop to be a light and lovely warm-weather accessory and a quick knit on size US 8 needles! Wear it long or looped, narrow or wide, with lace or without, or combine two or more cowls in different colors! The pattern is free with purchase of one hank of our Prairie Short Skeins until the end of August. |
Or check out the color combos in our Blueshift Loop kits or bouquets - two skeins are enough for a variety of fun combinations, and a download code for the pattern is included! | For a truly unique project, pick up an Artyarns Duets kit: Each kit consists of a hank of Supermerino and a skein of Silk Halo twisted together, and you need just one kit to make the included Duets Cowl pattern by Iris Schreier. The differences in texture and sheen in the two yarns make for an interesting knit and a one-of-a-kind, truly artistic look! |
| We're loving all the new crochet patterns in the shop, and one that's recently caught our eye is the Poetry in Yarn Drift Ice Shawl: It's worked from the top center outwards into a large, openwork crescent that shows off the beauty of a hand-dyed yarn like Malabrigo Sock perfectly! The shawl is lightweight enough to wear in warm weather and large enough to drape around your neck and shoulders for a spectacularly stylish accessory! |
| They're the perfect baby gift for knitters and non-knitters alike: Blue Sky Alpacas Royal Petite Knit Kits! These handy kits have everything but the needles: one ball of Royal Petites yarn, the adorable pattern for one of six different animals (each with his own little crown, squeee!), black thread for face details, and a pair of safety eyes. They're so cute, you might just want to keep them for yourself! |

We're all a-twitter over toys this summer - and we're knitting them, too! They're the perfect little projects to break the doldrums between larger undertakings, they're portable enough to take from the beach to the break room (what, doesn't everybody take knitting breaks at work?), and best of all for those of you who get the "knitting pricklies" in hot weather, they're small and finished in a wink!
Here are some of our favorite summer projects and the techniques to get you started knitting your own toys: | The Itty-Bitty Collections by Susan B. Anderson are a great place to start, or check out one of her new Knitted Doll Books - her creations are unique, gorgeously detailed, and universally loved! We also just got in an adorable assortment of her individual toy patterns that use DK- to bulky-weight yarn for quick-knitting, satisfying projects you might not want to give away! Choose from a chubby owl, a cow, a bunny (complete with carrots), a sweet sheep, or the Wee Ones 3-in-1 pattern that includes an elephant, hippo, and bunny. Just don't forget to make one for us! |
We also love the nifty little Mochimochi Land Tiny Knit Kits - they're beyond adorable! Each clever kit comes with enough yarn, stuffing, and the pattern to knit two or three Tom-Thumb-sized toys that you can turn into ornaments or pins, or just keep in your pocket to brighten your day!
Now that you've seen how adorable knitted toys are, it's time to choose your yarn! Because your toys are likely to be often-touched and well-loved, make sure to choose a sturdy yarn with resilient fibers. In the sport-weight category, Plymouth Galway Sport, Juniper Moon Farm Tenzing, Cascade 220 Superwash Sport, and for a luxurious touch, Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino, are all great bets! Durable DK-weights to consider include Filatura di Crosa Zara, Swans Island Ecowash DK, Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK, and Plymouth DK Merino Superwash. For hard-wearing worsteds, we like Plymouth Encore Worsted, Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted (we also have samples, which are perfect for small items!), Rowan Pure Wool Worsted, and Cascade 220 Superwash, and robust bulky-weights include Filatura Di Crosa Zara 14, Cascade 128 Superwash, and Lorna's Laces Cloudgate. And don't forget to check out our Yarn Samples, which are great all the little things like hair, faces, and embroidered accents!
Ready to try your hand at hand-crafted toys? Share your creations with us on Facebook, Instagram, or Ravelry! And crocheters, take note: next month we'll focus on your favorite creations - amigurumi, anyone?

Every so often (actually, pretty often!) a project comes along that inspires several of us to pick up our needles at the same time, and we're always thrilled when that happens - nothing's more fun than knitting along with a friend, and tackling a pattern together and seeing the diverse results as we each interpret it in our own way keeps things interesting! Last year, three Beans (along with hundreds of knitters on Ravelry!) knit up Rachel's Out-Landish Shawl and made it their own; check out their different versions - maybe you'll be inspired to knit one of your own after you see it through their eyes! | Rachel used the Lorna's Laces Limited Edition colors Fraser and Beauchamps in Shepherd Sport, and her version reflects her vision for the design: Two strong colors that play off each other and marry well into a beautiful shawl. The colors she chose are multi-hued, but they blend together perfectly and provide an extra bit of visual interest! |
Erika decided to go for a more subtle color approach for her Shawl. She chose Shepherd Sport in two solid shades: a neutral (Kerfuffle) and a bright contrast color (Farwell) for a visual pop! We love how the colors play off each other, and the pink and gray combo is so stylish. She also slightly elongated the mesh edging to make the shawl a bit larger and get the most out of her skein.
| |
| Jenn is a Madelinetosh lover, so she knit her version out of Tosh Sport in Penny Loafers and Esoteric, two understated shades that create a truly sophisticated look. She also used 2 skeins of each to make the shawl larger - it's like a warm, cozy blanket! The Tosh Sport is a little heavier than the yarn originally called for, so this knit will keep her warm into the winter! Do these projects have you itching to knit a Shawl of your very own? Pick up a kit for a Shepherd Sport Shawl or a Tosh Sport version, and show us your take on it! |

For the second year in a row, JBW was the proud sponsor of the Women's Day Luncheon at the Barracuda Championship, a PGA level golf tournament held here in the Reno area. And for the second year in a row, we had a blast! | The event kicked off early for Bethany, Terry, Marilyn, Sandy, Jeanne, Dianna, Leanne and Jimmy (aka Laura): they arrived at Montreaux Golf Course at 8:30am to help put a beautiful yarn bouquet of Rowan Pure Wool 4ply on every table for the luncheon, then cast on 165 pairs of needles (at 5 stitches per pair of needles, that's 825 stitches!!). |
Why so many stitches? Well, the plan was to teach all 165 attendees how to knit in 5 minutes or less - and it was a success!
Jeanne led the chant of "Stab! Wrap! Pull it through! Pull it off!" while the rest of the Beans ran around helping the ladies learn the basic knit stitch.
| |
For a larger-than-life demonstration, Jimmy was on stage knitting with a pair of golf clubs and some super-di-duper bulky yarn (aka rope) so everyone could see. Because knitting on golf clubs can be tricky for a beginner, attendees were using Knitter's Pride Trendz needles and Rowan Pure Wool Worsted to get their knit on. A big thank you to Rowan and Knitter's Pride for donating the yarn and needles for the event and helping us to inspire a room full of women to pick up one of the best hobbies on the planet (tied for first place with crocheting, of course!). | Other highlights from the afternoon included a scrumptious lunch and dating game entertainment ('60s game-show-style) complete with yarn roses (knit by Jeanne!) for those bachelors lucky enough to win the affection of the bachelorettes, as well as tips from golf pro Lisa "Longball" Vlooswyk, and a putting contest using a ball of yarn from JBW! |
If you like the bouquets from the event, we've got them for sale here at the shop! Each arrangement comes with 5 skeins of Rowan Pure Wool 4ply - enough yarn to make a delightfully stripey pair of knee high socks. A link to download the pattern is included with each bouquet, and for those who prefer just the basics, kits including the yarn and pattern are also available!
