Beginning a new knitted project can be intimidating, especially if it's something you've never tried before. But starting new things is how we beef up our skill set, set new challenges for ourselves, and increase our confidence as knitters. Here are our Top 3 Tips for starting that new project off on the right foot!
1. Consider your yarn choice carefully. Want to show off that gorgeous hand-dyed color? Choose a stitch pattern that isn't too complicated - cables and lace might not show up like you want, and a simpler pattern will let the dyer's hard work really shine! Using a self-striping yarn for a garment? Remember that the striping sequence will show up differently on parts of the garment that are different sizes, such as the sleeves. If this is an issue for you, consider choosing a yarn with a more muted palette or even a heathered or tweedy yarn, which both have color interest but will look consistent throughout the garment.
 |
2. Choose your tools! Needle choice can make your project a pleasure or a purgatory. Does your pattern include lots of increases (knitting more than once into the same stitch, or making stitches between other stitches)? Make sure you choose pointy needles - they'll make getting into those tight spaces much easier! Knitting with a slippery yarn? Bamboo or wood are more likely to keep those stitches where you want them - on your needles.
|
3. One cast-on method does not fit all. You may have one that's your favorite, but your project might be better served by a different method. Sometimes you need a neckline with more stretch, an edge that looks good with cables, or even a circular cast on! Same goes for casting off - there are many different methods out there that will really put the finishing touch on your work. | |
Check out some of our instructional videos for help in choosing the right cast-on and bind-off methods for your project, from top-down sweaters to picot edges! We hope these tips will help you feel armed and ready to tackle any new project that comes your way! Have tips to share? Let us know! |

Jill's Fur Snood With A Twist | Jill is a beginning knitter but she proves that even with limited skills, you can make something fabulous and fun! For her first shop knit, she chose the Erika Knight Fur Snood With A Twist, and she did an amazing job! This simple Möbius strip cowl gets plenty of interest from the Erika Knight Fur Wool Yarn. Jill loves purple, so she chose the gorgeous Mulberry colorway. She says the super-bulky yarn weight helped move this project along quickly, and the fur texture hid any mistakes she might have made. We call that a win-win! |
Leanne's Cocoknits Yyonne Vest | Leanne has had her eye on the beautiful and stylish Yvonne Vest by Cocoknits ever since we got the pattern in stock. Equally entranced by the Jimmy Beans Exclusive yarn Koigu American Merino, she hurried to cast on and was rewarded in next to no time with a cute vest to help her complete a layered look! Leanne is a purple lover (to put it mildly), so she chose colorway JB477. She said the Yvonne was a fun knit and she wouldn't hesitate to do it again! |
Gus's Woven Technicolor Dreamcoat Scarf | Gus had a great time weaving this colorful scarf - don't they just keep getting more and more beautiful? The luxurious Tosh Vintage yarn was brought into a dream state in the vibrant 1st Exclusive Tailor-Made Tosh color, 'Technicolor Dreamcoat', and looks fantastic paired with the gorgeous shade of blue Cascade Pure Alpaca Yarn!!! Gus used his Cricket Loom for this project. He says he can't wait to pick up one of our new Cricket Loom Stands as soon as they come in! |
Monika's Branching Out Shawl | Monika loves bright colors and shawls, so for her the Tin Can Knits Branching Out Shawl in one skein of Fyberspates Gleem Lace in the color Sunshine was a match made in heaven! The yarn is a well-balanced blend of Bluefaced Leicester wool and pure silk, so it blocks really well and has fantastic drape. With over 800 yards to the hank, even a larger shawl like this one took only one skein! The pattern is chart only, easy to follow, and used less than the one skein required. |
