 | Are you ready to get Downton? With the 2015 Downton Abbey Mystery Knitalong , that is! This year's pattern is a shawl (the mystery's in the knitting, not the object) inspired by the long-suffering middle daughter of the Grantham clan, Edith! Kristen will kick off the MKAL with your first clue on Sunday, January 4th, and you'll get a new clue each Sunday for the 7 weeks the show runs. |
The project will use two colors of Lorna's Laces Solemate: one skein in Edith's Secret, our December Lorna's Laces Limited Edition color, plus one skein in a complementary color - we suggest Buckingham Fountain (Kristen's pick), Old Rose, Manzanita, Grand Street Ink, or Farwell, but of course, the choice is up to you! We have kits available in the suggested pairings that include a download code for the pattern, or if you decide to choose your own colors in Solemate or Shepherd Sock, just let us know you're participating in the MKAL and we'll provide you with a code for just $3 (included with the cost of the kit). Once you have your yarn, join the MKAL on Ravelry and start getting excited!
*Please note some of the colors listed above are currently sold out, but we have more on the way! Pre-order today and we'll ship your kit as soon as these colors are back in stock, which should be here with time to spare before the MKAL! |

When knitting a gauge swatch, don't think only about stockinette - seasoned knitters know that the best way to get an idea of what your finished project will look like is to test out the pattern stitches, too (and hey, it's good practice for later!). Try this:
Depending on your yarn weight, cast on enough stitches to give you a 4-inch wide swatch. For example, if you're hoping to get 5 stitches per inch, cast on 20 stitches, plus a few more for good measure.
- Take into account how many stitches are in a repeat of your pattern stitch, and make sure you cast on a multiple of that number.
- Knit at least 2 inches in stockinette, and at least one repeat of each pattern motif. Then you can decide if you like the look of the fabric and measure the gauge in each section for stitches per inch.
- If your pattern only gives gauge for one type of stitch (like this year's Downton Abbey MKAL pattern), you only need to swatch in that pattern, but the rule for number of stitches to cast on still applies.
| |
If your project features a relatively simple stitch and you're not a perfectionist, you can use this tip from Diane Soucy Knitting Pure and Simple to achieve the right gauge once you've already begun a project and don't want to rip it out: |
- Start your project with the needle size called for in the pattern (or the size you think you'll need, based on your knowledge of how tightly or loosely you usually knit).
- After several rows, check your gauge (stitches per inch), and adjust your needle size accordingly - if the gauge is too tight (too many stitches per inch), go UP a needle size.
- If it's too loose (too few stitches per inch), go DOWN a needle size.
- Alternate the two needle sizes every other row for a few rows, and then switch over completely to the new needle size.
