It's officially fall! The leaves have started to turn, the kids are back in school, and it's almost time for Halloween! Nothing inspires costumes more than fairy tales and fantasy stories like those presented in the TV series Once Upon a Time. Many of us at Jimmy Beans love the show, especially for the frequent appearance of hand-knits, but mostly for the great storyline and frequent references to our favorite childhood stories. That is why we thought it would be nice to create an October color fit for a fairy tale! Deep, misty grayish purples, soft rose, and bright fuchsia brings to life some of our favorite moments in the show while creating a gorgeous meld of colors that will variegate beautifully together. While these colors might say more "princess" than "prince", we like to think that the color represents the magic of Storybrook (the fictional town in Maine where the show mostly takes place) perfectly. We hope this color brings a little magic to your life this October!
"Once Upon a Time" is available in all of your favorite Lorna's Laces yarns including: Lorna's newest yarn, Haymarket, Shepherd Sock, Shepherd Worsted, Shepherd Sport, Helen's Lace, Lion & Lamb, Honor, Solemate, and Sportmate!

Once Upon a Time is a variegated yarn without a lot of dramatic color changes, making it perfect for a variety of projects! If you love a good cozy sweater, then Knitting Pure and Simple's Top-Down Drape Front Cardigan is a fantastic knit for fall! For optimal drape and warmth, choose to knit this using between 4 and 7 skeins (depending on your size) of Lorna's Laces Honor, a scrumptious blend of alpaca and silk. If a slightly smaller project is what you have in mind, try Grace Akhrem's Seaweed Scarf with just one skein of the amazing Sportmate or Tiny Owl Knits' Orchids & Fairy Lights Hat in one skein of Haymarket. For your feet, be sure to check out Churchmouse's Turkish Bed Socks pattern that uses about half a skein of Solemate or Shepherd Sock (you can get two pairs from one skein!), or the Cozy Boot Cuffs with two or three skeins of Shepherd Worsted. The project possibilities are endless, and you are sure to finish with a gorgeous knit that will keep you warm all through the coming cold months! |

Each season, Trendsetter releases a unique selection of new yarns to indulge the most fashionable of knitters. This year is no exception with a collection of wildly exciting fibers and looks. First up we have Strata and Palomino. Strata is a tonally self-striping worsted weight single ply yarn with a little bit of sheen. When paired with the flirty suede-like fringe of Palomino as shown in the Trendsetter Strata & Palomino Collection, the result is a medley of color and texture. In a similar vein, the Versailles Collection using the new Versailles yarn is meld of fuzzy boucle texture with glittery glam which makes for cozy yet seriously chic knits. Up next on the new Trendsetter front is Ascot, a single ply, worsted weight machine washable yarn in gorgeous self-striping colors. The strands have a tweedy look that adds depth to each of the colors and gives interest to colorwork and simple patterns alike. Check out the designs in the Ascot Family Collection, which includes patterns for both men and women. The final new additions for fall are Illusion and Kid Chic. Illusion is a tonally colored thick and thin yarn available in a versatile range of jewel tones and neutrals, while Kid Chic is a silk and mohair blend with a bit of sparkle. Both yarns create unique pieces that shine, like the designs in the Illusion & Kid Chic Collection. You are sure to be the height of fashion this fall with any of these new yarns from Trendsetter! |

Rozetti Wicked Fur - 102 Tundra Wolf $12.00 | For a truly fun and furry Halloween, check out the Rozetti Wicked Fur yarn! When paired with a regular plied yarn like Universal Deluxe Worsted Superwash to give it a little structure, it's great for fuzzy hats (like the Knitting Pure and Simple Animal Hats pattern), or as a trim on legwarmers, mitts, and other accessories. Check out some of the Free Patterns using this yarn on the Universal Yarns Website. This isn't like the "fur" yarns of yore - Wicked Fur takes fur yarns to the next level with its super soft and silky feel that is amazing next to skin! | Katia Extreme - 62 $15.95 | Neon is back - and here is the perfect way to stand out in the crowd with this bright new yarn from Katia. Extreme is a super bulky acrylic yarn with a chainette construction. Whip up chunky accessories like the KnittinIt Bulky Earflap Hat on US size 17 or 19 needles in no time at all. Extreme is extra soft and has a lustrous sheen which makes it the perfect yarn for those times when you need a super unique (and bright) garment to wear for any activity. | The Unofficial Downton Abbey Knits Magazine $14.99 | Piece Work's latest special edition, The Unofficial Downton Abbey Knits, is the perfect knitspiration to tide you over until the next season of Downton starts in January. With knits for upstairs, downstairs, and the troops, The Unofficial Downton Abbey Knits magazine is chock full of period pieces that are wearable in even the most modern of wardrobes. It certainly makes you wonder if the editors over at Piece Work participated in the Downton Abbey Mystery KAL we hosted earlier this year! With knits for both men and women, as well as fascinating historical articles and essays, this issue is a must-have addition to any Downton fan's knitting library! | Reywa Fibers Embrace - Festival $39.50 | Made from 100% Yak down, Embrace by Reywa Fibers is luxuriously soft and cozy warm. Yak down blooms slowly over time, creating a lovely halo of warmth that becomes increasingly soft. Use just one skein to make Ann Norling's Cowl on the Diagonal, or splurge on enough yardage to make Adam's Ribs by Sunday Knits. Either way, you will not regret wrapping yourself in the delicious Embrace of this yarn from Reywa Fibers! PS. Learn everything you ever wanted to know about Yak Fiber in Terry's most recent post on the JBW Blog! | Half Moon Modern Zig Zags - Stone Medium $10.99/yd | Chevrons are a hot trend right now, which is why we love the new Half Moon Modern Zig Zags collection from Moda. Chevrons of all sizes and colors make this collection wonderfully versatile for garments, quilts, and any number of projects! Use it to line your next knit and felted bag, or make a cute tunic, like the Schoolhouse Tunic by Sew Liberated (check out Jeanne's, Marilyn's, Kristen's and
Sandy's cute versions on the Project Log!) or Sew Serendipity's new Priscilla Tunic, to wear with your next hand knit shawl or cowl. Either way you stitch it, Half Moon Modern Zig Zags is just that, modern, simple, and stylish! |

 | We've been noticing a fair number of trends on Ravelry that we admire, and that admiration has inspired this new monthly feature: the Ravelry Trend of the Month! Each month, we'll pick a design to feature in our newsletter and tell you a little bit about the designer and the yarn they used. This month, we've chosen Melinda VerMeer's Nymphalidea shawlette, which was in the Deep Fall 2013 issue of Knitty. To prepare for this feature, we asked Melinda a few questions, including the all-important "What did you eat for dinner last night?", to which she responded, "Roasted delicata squash picked from my veggie garden!" Yum! Sounds like a great choice to us!
Melinda tells us that Nymphalidea's mesh lace separated by solid welts is meant to mimic butterfly wings, while the colors of Schoppel Wolle Zauberball Crazy and Malabrigo Sock lend a beautiful contrast between the two stitch patterns. |
One thing we've noticed about this Portland, Oregon, native's designs is that they are often innovative yet simple, which makes sense considering she told us she gets most of her "knitspiration" from the casual feel of the Pacific Northwest!
To knit Melinda's Nymphalidea shawlette, be sure to get the free pattern from Knitty.com. You'll need just one ball each of Zauberball Crazy and Malabrigo Sock or another similar yarn such as Shalimar Breathless, Dream in Color Smooshy, or Sweet Georgia Tough Love Sock. Thanks to Melinda for humoring us and allowing us to feature her brilliant design and answering our silly (and not so silly) questions! To check out more of Melinda's work, you can check out her Ravelry Design Page.
