"Live long and prosper". If you're a fan of Star Trek from any generation, you know exactly where this phrase comes from (Vulcan!); and if you're not a fan, chances are you still know it, though probably as something Trekkies say while making a weird shape with one hand. There are several Star Trek enthusiasts here at the shop, and with the latest Star Trek movie called Into Darkness on the horizon (in theatres May 17th!!), we couldn't help but pay homage to Captain Kirk, Spock and the Enterprise crew with this Lorna's Limited Edition color way. Bold and sophisticated, Live Long And Prosper combines black with a trio of solid red, blue and gold that mirrors the three typical Starfleet uniform colors you'd expect to find on the bridge of the Enterprise. It also happens to be a stunning combo that knits up into a complex patterning of primary colors - perfect for kids clothes, afghans, and accessories of all kinds! No matter how you feel about science fiction, it's easy to feel good about this bright, versatile colorway that lets you explore all sorts of creative project ideas!
Live Long And Prosper is available in all of your favorite Lorna's Laces yarns including: Lorna's newest yarn, Haymarket, Shepherd Sock, Shepherd Worsted, Shepherd Sport, Helen's Lace, Lion & Lamb, Honor, Solemate, and Sportmate!
If your mom happens to be a fan of the Star Trek franchise (and/or is a Lorna's Limited Edition enthusiast), be sure to check out the Live Long and Prosper Bouquet -it would make a great Mother's Day gift! Featuring one skein each of all the Lorna's yarns listed above, this unique bouquet is truly one-of-a-kind. We only have a few in stock, so be sure to grab one before they're gone! | LLE Live Long and Prosper Bouquet $280.00 |

 | Well, the results are in: The Mother's Day Bouquets were a hit! The unique collection of limited-edition hand-dyed yarns was absolutely stunning, and combined with the novel idea of perching yarn "flowers" on stems in a vase just like a traditional flower arrangement. They sold out in a matter of days, and our Beans got right to work assembling, packing, and shipping them right out to their intended recipients. We've already gotten so much positive feedback; we decided to do something radical: Make more bouquets! |
While they're not identical to the Mother's Day bouquets (we're out of some of the limited-edition colors from the original arrangements, but we still have a few skeins of the Koigu, Fleece Artist, Lorna's Laces, and Malabrigo
colors in stock for individual purchase), we've put together gorgeous arrangements of some of our customer favorites:
| |
Bright and beautiful hand-painted Koigu Painter's Palette Premium Merino (KPPPM) and the new Malabrigo Dos, a premium baby merino wool yarn dyed with completely natural dyes in a muted and elegant collection of colors. Each yarn is gently formed into a flower shape and placed on knitting needle stems, then displayed in a glass vase with a pretty ribbon and tissue paper leaves. These new beauties will ship in early May, just in time for Mother's Day! |

This spring season, Rowan has really outdone themselves with some fabulous new cotton yarns! First up: A chunky version of the favorite old standby All Seasons Cotton, All Seasons Chunky is a fabulous hard-working cotton blend yarn in a gorgeous palette of colors. With a composition of 60% Cotton and 40% Acrylic, it is great for items that need to be machine washed over and over again, like baby blankets and baby items, summer sweaters that feel like your favorite old sweatshirt, or home accessories. It can be knit on big needles (like size US 10.5 or larger) and it just seems to get softer and better with age and washing! Also, don't miss the Rowan All Seasons Chunky Collection. We've created kits for some of our favorites including the Athena, Hebe, and Rhea pullovers as well as the gorgeous Selene Cardigan! Next up on the latest and greatest list from Rowan is Softknit Cotton. This is unlike any other cotton we've seen, having a chainette construction and brushed softness that feels just like your favorite fleecy robe! The yarn itself is 92% cotton and 8% polyamide to give the chainette a little bit of extra structure, but don't let that fool you - this yarn has amazing drape and stitch definition too! Softknit Cotton is also machine-washable, making it super easy to care for and great for medium weight items for babies, kids, and adults as well as accessories for summer. The Softknit Cotton Collection book was one of our favorites of the season because of its wide range of garments for both men and women. We really love the Barry Pullover, Killarney Vest, Finola Belted Cardigan and Regan Cardigan, all of which are set up as kits on our website to make shopping easy-peasy!

Color Play Mohair Scarf and Wrap $5.00 | Churchmouse Patterns are a constant favorite here at Jimmy Beans, and we have two new potential additions to your knitting queue! The Modern Wrapper is the quintessential layering piece for these cool mornings: the oversized fit offers full coverage similar to a poncho, but the sleeves (which you can custom-fit to your arm length) allow you to keep your arms free. The Color Play Mohair Scarf and Wrap is the perfect way to play with your favorite colors of Rowan Kidsilk Haze (or your prefered mohair/silk blend) - juxtapose contrasting colors to follow the colorblock trend, hold different colors together for an ombre effect...the possibilities are endless! | Nelkin Designs Soutache Set - Velvet $30.00 | The Soutache Set is Laura Nelkin's brand new knitted jewelry design, and we are already in love with it! "Soutache" describes a flat braid traditionally used for trimming garments, but this set lets you create gorgeous plaits to adorn your wrist and neckline! Constructed of four strands of knitted I-cord into which lustrous beads are interwoven, both the necklace and bracelet are closed with snap clasps for easy-on, easy-off maneuverability. Try combining different colors in one braid for a truly unique and vibrant result! | Knitterly Necessary Cowl - Neutrals $25.00 | We've got one item that is truly necessary for every wardrobe: Necessary Cowl by Shelli Westcott! Shelli came up with the cowl to use up an overstock of yarn from her shop, Knitterly, in Petaluma, CA; the beauty of it is that you can combine any yarns (or use just one bulky strand) to get gauge, allowing you to put together endless variations and even use up some of that stash yarn! Shelli personally put together grab-bag kits in a wide variety of colors, and the yarns she used are fantastic: Rowan, Debbie Bliss, and Lana Grossa, just to name a few. Each kit includes the pattern, all the yarn to knit the main part of the cowl, as well as a small amount of accent yarn to provide a "pop" of color, all packaged in one of our cute JBW project bags! | Frog Tree Flock Wooligan Kits - Clan Windsor $32.00 | No room in your backyard to keep your own flock of sheep? Never fear - Frog Tree Flock Wooligan Kits are the solution! Knit up your own little flock of fuzzy lambs to give as gifts, use as decorations or Christmas tree ornaments, or just to keep you company by your desk or favorite knitting chair! We suspect they'd make great cat toys, too. Each kit holds enough Pediboo sock yarn to knit 7 sheep in different colors; choose between three color schemes (or "clans"), and don't overlook the adorable names for each sheep!
| Malabrigo Mecha - 877 Queguay $15.00 | You already know and love Malabrigo yarn: sumptuous, vibrant, kettle-dyed colors in a variety of delicious natural-fiber bases from lace weight Baby Silkpaca to super-chunky Rasta, these yarns have become our favorite Uruguayan export! Now we have one more to drool over: Mecha, a vividly color-saturated single-ply wool in a bulky weight! This big beauty comes in generous 130-yard skeins and best of all, it's superwash! We've already started planning next year's cold-weather knitting in order to take advantage of this amazing yarn. It would be wonderful for the Churchmouse Classics Magic Three-Yarn Scarf and Wrap pattern, for example - so let's cozy up! |

Ever since we first heard about Jul Designs - the brainchild of Laura Bellows, sister of the illustrious Nora Bellows of Noni - we've been waiting with bated breath to get the amazing products in the shop! The ingenious leather clasps, buttons, and purse handles are stylish and well-made, and you can see from just a glance that they are of the highest quality materials. Perhaps the best part of their allure is that most of them attach semi-permanently to your garment with screws to hold them in place, but the clasps still open in the middle so you can take the garment on and off with ease. When you're ready to move the clasp to another garment, just unfasten the screws and you can use it on something else! Try mixing and matching the clasps and buttons for different looks and to maximize their impact across your wardrobe! And don't forget about the leather handles and bag feet; the leather handles look great on a felted bag - and the feet keep the bottom of your bag from getting damaged. The leather clasps created quite a buzz among the Beans, but it was the Jul patterns created to go with them that really piqued our interest: They are positively unique! Take the Strata Collar, for instance; knitted side to side with simple but visually interesting ridges along one edge, it's quick to knit but makes a big impression. The Furrow is another favorite - with five different ways to knit and wear it, it's a versatile and beautiful garment. It can be a cozy oversized cowl for keeping warm on a chilly day, a stole for going out at night, a neck warmer for the office air conditioning, or even two different scarves! We also have kits for the Lava Flow Cowl (Rachel's personal favorite) and the Infinity Scarf. Any which way you choose to wear these unique knits, you can be sure that you'll be the epitome of style! |

Just in time for summer, we've found the perfect knit to complement your wardrobe! The textured Rowan Savannah yarn comes in a gorgeously muted color palette inspired by the desert, creating a wide range of neutrals that will go with almost anything. The Desert cardigan, from the Rowan Savannah Collection, is a cap-sleeved beauty with a rounded neckline and flowing shape that can be pinned closed with a shawl pin or worn open. This simple little cardigan can easily be layered over any summer top for a bit of extra warmth in the evenings, but still has a breezy and ethereal feel and a little structure, too. When you've got "nothing" to wear, this little cardi will save the day with a shape that will never go out of style and will always be an icon of comfort and beauty! | |

Jenn's Belle Cable Hat | Jenn made this cute hat using one of her favorite yarns, Rowan Lima! She chose this pattern because she really liked the cables and style of this slouch hat. The hat pattern comes from the Rowan Winter Warmers book and uses two balls of Lima. The only deviation Jenn made from the pattern is that she started the crown decreases at about 20cm (earlier than the pattern calls for) since she knew Rowan Lima tends to grow, and she wanted her hat to be slightly less slouchy. She definitely recommends checking your gauge, since the alpaca in this yarn will make the hat "relax" quite a bit! If you are just a little loose, definitely go down a needle size or two. |
Jeanne's Stroma Legwarmers | Jeanne knit these Fair Isle legwarmers in delicious Rowan Felted Tweed, and they are super gorgeous! She found the pattern on Ravelry--it's free from the Rowan Website. The pattern is called Stroma. Stroma is featured in issue #52 of Rowan Magazine as well. Jeanne says not to be intimidated by Fair Isle! You can do it, and it's WAY easier than it seems! |
Marilyn's Gypsy Petticoat | Marilyn is our resident super-knitter! She whips out projects SO fast, which is why we were not surprised that she finished this in about 10 days! This pattern is by Tiny Owl Knits (Stephanie Dosen) and was published in Knitscene Magazine- Fall 2012. The pattern is called 'Gypsy Petticoat' and is a duster style vest with ruffles, made to layer over a dress, skirt, or flowy pants. It uses Rowan Purelife Revive and is absolutely stunning. Nice work Marilyn, we can't wait to see her wear this! |
Monika's Coddle Hood | Monika's latest project is absolutely gorgeous and the envy of every bean here at the shop! This hooded poncho from the Rowan Winter Drift book is perfect for layering over winter sweaters and coats for just a little bit of extra warmth. The hood is nice and long and also folds down to create a big cowl neck if desired. Monika chose a gorgeous shade of Drift in a deep eggplant purple color, which gleams against her beautiful red hair. We just love how this turned out! Nice work Monika! |
Jenn's Noelle Cape | Jenn is so quick on the needles, she knit two projects in Rowan Lima in about a month! Like her Belle Cable Hat, this adorable and cuddly capelet comes from the Rowan Winter Warmers book, and Jenn made it in the same color of Lima (882 Chile) to match! Size shown is Large, which uses 6 balls of Lima; smaller and larger sizes are available with the pattern, using 5 and 7 balls, respectively. Jenn would remind anyone working with this yarn that the alpaca causes it to 'grow' or stretch quite a bit during and after knitting, so please take that into consideration when checking your gauge and choosing a size. |
Sandy's Rowan Lima Dolinar Cowl | Sandy just loves Rowan Lima (as do many of us at the shop, can you tell?!), a buttery soft and cuddly baby alpaca blend! She wanted to make something cozy to be worn next to her face and neck, and the Dolinar Cowl by Stephen West was the perfect choice. It's a free Ravelry download, but also appears in Westknits Book Two. Sandy used color 883 Titicaca, which we no longer stock, but color 882 Chile would be another beautiful green to use! |

 | You've probably noticed that we don't have many guys working here at JBW; it takes a strong man to march fearlessly into a close-knit group of women! But ask any gal here and she'll tell you, Spencer is our guy - even though he's only been here about 3 months, he's made himself right at home on our E-Commerce team. And while many of us would never admit that it's nice to have a man around to help us with the heavy lifting, Spencer always offers. :) He's also learned to knit on both a loom and needles - way to go, Spence! He'd better get to knitting, though; next year he hopes to go to Antarctica to provide support for research expeditions, where he'll need plenty of woolens to keep him warm! |
A student at TMCC, Spencer plans to major in either English or Journalism to satisfy his love of reading and writing. When he's not hitting the books or slinging yarn, you can find him scaling walls, boulders, and cliff faces doing what he loves best: Rock-climbing! His favorite places to practice his craft are the River Rock area of the Truckee River, the Washoe Boulders, and the Keystone Boulder right here in town. He also loves to skateboard (he uses an old-school longboard) and juggle fire. Yes, you read that correctly; he purposely sets batons on fire and tosses them expertly around in the air! They're called "Devil Sticks" - go figure. That might be fun, but I think even Spencer would agree that juggling yarn is softer...and doesn't leave scars! |
