We revealed to you how much we love summer with our Summer Fun Felted Bags in the last newsletter, and judging by how popular they've been, it looks like you feel the same way! That's why we think you'll be thrilled to see our July Denise2Go Limited Edition set - a mix of cool blues, teals and warm reds on a white background, it screams summer! That's why we named it Summer Parade - the fun polka dots and mod-inspired designs in Jenean Morrison's Beechwood Park fabric fabric brought to mind warm-weather celebrations and outdoor activities! And the coordinating red, white, and blue cords just add to the party. Snag one of these beauties before they're gone, and even after summer is over, you'll be knitting away to thoughts of balmy weather, fireflies, and festive parade music!
The Denise2Go set is perfect for the knitter on-the-go who likes to travel light! Each limited edition set comes with six pairs of needle tips in the most popular sizes, US 5 through US 10, three cords (14", 16", and 19" lengths), and a cord extender. It also includes two cord end caps and a handy little crochet hook! All of these knitting essentials tuck up into a charming palm-sized little bundle that fits easily in a knitting bag, purse, or pocket.

 | What goes hand in hand with winter sports better than cozy hand-knit garments? Absolutely nothing! So with that in mind, we asked 30 world class athletes including Tommy Moe, Picabo Street, and Franz Weber to name a few, what their most treasured winter garments were for wearing on and off the slopes - and then set to work recreating them! Our latest book, Stitch Mountain is part of the Stitch Mountain campaign, a joint project of Jimmy Beans Wool and Red Heart® that's supplying U.S. Snowboarding and U.S. Freeskiing athletes and their fans with yarn, knitting and crochet supplies to inspire them to hand-make their own winter gear! |
The Stitch Mountain book combines the history of snow sports with the history of knitted winter gear and highlights skiing, snowboarding and the sports' greatest athletes in a unique way. It features 30 knitting patterns inspired by top athletes (many of whom will compete at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi!) and created by knitting industry greats for knitting your own winter garments and accessories and sporting your own unique style on and off the mountain. Stitch Mountain will ship in late-November, just in time for winter! We wanted to announce the book to you now for one very important reason... We are headed this week to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association's (USSA) Partner Summit in Park City, Utah, where we are going to present the first mockup of the book to a wide audience of snow sport athletes and their fans and other USSA Partners - and wanted YOU to be the first in the know! Our hope is that our work at the Partner Summit will result in bringing knitting and crochet supplies to ski shops all over the country, so that winter sport enthusiasts can get inspired to become knitters and crocheters and create their own gear!

Berroco's fall collection is here and we couldn't be more thrilled! Their latest yarns are nothing short of amazing, and the patterns to go with them are beyond awesome! First, we should mention that Norah Gaughan broke one of her cardinal rules with her latest collection ( Vol. 13) and we are so glad she did! The entire collection features seamless designs with her signature flair. Stunning patterns like Gibson, Silverberg, Hume (her most popular new design at TNNA), and Pohl utilize two of Berroco's newest yarns, Abode and Kodiak, perfectly!
Abode is an immediate new favorite; a single ply thick and thin merino with a unique printed effect that comes in a lovely range of muted and tweedy-looking colors. The Abode collection features some equally gorgeous designs such as the Boxelder Scarf and the Erman Capelet . Kodiak, a super soft blend of alpaca, nylon and wool with a gorgeous halo effect, is a surprisingly lightweight chunky yarn. Examples from the Kodiak collection include Gazost, a stylish turban hat, and Aude, a cozy shawlette style scarf.
Also new among the Berroco ranks is Marmot, a fur-like yarn that is velvety soft. Check out the Burwash cowl and the Dalton cardigan for some cozy garment goodness this fall. If you love Boboli and Boboli Quick, you are sure to love the new and beautiful Boboli Lace! This light fingering weight yarn is perfect for shawls, scarves and socks and it is amazingly colorful with a subtle sheen. We love the Kirkham Scarf and Bleddyn Shawlette, the perfect uses for just one or two balls of Boboli Lace! Lastly, the sparkly Brio is both charming and fun all wrapped into one chunky yarn package. The fringed Barnell Scarf and sophisticated Caley Tunic are both surprisingly quick knits on large needles and are a great way to wear such a unique yarn. Overall, Berroco's latest contributions to the yarn world are sure to get you excited for fall knitting! |

Rosemary "Romi" Hill just wrapped up her 7 Small Shawls Year 3 Series - Home is Where the Heart Is with a bang by releasing a fireworks explosion of patterns in the week leading up to the 4th of July. With those patterns, she released the final three shawls in the series: River Walk, Blackjack, and Desert Peach.
River Walk is a stunning water themed shawl that uses two colors of Shalimar Breathless, while Blackjack uses Artyarns' delicious Cashmere 1, a single ply strand of light and airy cashmere in a deep cranberry and black color combo with richly colored beads along the edge. The all-over lace patterns of each of these shawls are simply elegant and gorgeous!

Desert Peach is another beautiful all-over lace shawl with a mix of lace motifs down the center, sides and edges. This ethereal shawl is knit in Swans Island Natural Colors Fingering in the lovely Raspberry shade. Each of these new patterns is available now for pre-order as a hard copy version, or you can purchase the entire collection of Home is Where the Heart Is directly from Romi as an e-book. We also offer kits for all of the shawls in the Home is Where the Heart Is collection, including River Walk, Blackjack, and Desert Peach. The E-book Collection also includes 5 bonus patterns this year in addition to the 7 Small Shawls, so be sure to check them out if you are considering buying more than one pattern. The entire collection is awesome and super fun to knit! Thank you Romi for allowing us to be a part of your collection this year! It's been such a fun collaboration and we've loved every minute of it!

Louisa Harding Grace Hand-dyed: 38% off!
What could be better than a sumptuous blend of Italian merino wool and silk in a lofty, soft single-ply? Why, make it hand-dyed, of course, and buy it on sale! Louisa Harding Grace Hand-dyed is an absolutely delicious DK-weight singles, expertly hand-dyed by Chilean artisans. The colors, adorably named after flowers, are just to "dye" for! The silk gives it an amazing sheen and the wool is warm and cozy for heads, hands, necks...anywhere you can think to put it!
S. Charles Collezione Eclipse: 50% off! Cotton chainette yarns have been gaining in popularity, and for good reason: their unique construction allows for great air movement and drape, resulting in wonderfully lightweight garments perfect for warmer weather. Eclipse by S. Charles Collezione has joined the ranks of the favorites, partly because of its bright and cheerful color palette, but also because of an added bonus: it has a strand of metallic thread woven throughout for a perfect pop of shine! This yarn will make for some memorable and eye-catching projects! Plymouth Sin City and Sinsation: 60% off! These two new sale yarns from Plymouth are flying off the shelves! Sin City is a chenille soft-touch yarn made even cozier with the addition of wool. It has just a touch of metallic shine to make it stand out in whatever project you happen to choose. Sinsation is a classic rayon chenille that's heavenly to the touch. Use it for a special scarf or for an Elegant Velvet Clutch, a free pattern on our website! Pony Pearl Circulars: 50% off! Looking to supplement your needle stash? This is the moment to stock up on all those sizes you're missing (or on ones you just want extras of!), because Pony Pearl Circulars are on sale! They're made of lightweight cellulose and are extremely durable and smooth. In sizes US 5 to US 19, you can get all of those larger sizes you may have been hesitant to buy before, as larger needles usually cost more. The cord lengths range from 24" to 40", perfect for a range of projects in circular or flat knitting! |

Gina's Hawthorne Shawl | Gina cast on for this gorgeous shawl using three skeins of Tosh Vintage Short Skeins that she had in her stash. The result is a beautiful worsted weight shawl that is perfect to wear in the winter but still has a ton of drape! We love the lace border and simple garter stitch center! The pattern is called 'Hawthorne' and it's designed by Susanna IC from the Fall 2010 Twist Collective. It can be purchased for download on Ravelry. |
Jeanne's 'Yvonne' Circular Vest | Jeanne recently bound off on her epic Yvonne project. Many of us beans have cast on for Yvonne - the pattern is by Cocoknits and it's a stunning open draped vest with a huge shawl collar. Jeanne was the first of us to finish, and the result is absolutely gorgeous! She used a discontinued Noro yarn called Yuzen (hurray for having sweater quantities of yarn stashed away!) but she says the composition is very similar to Noro Silk Garden Lite, which would be an excellent substitute. We thought this pattern was so flattering that we took photos of it on a bunch of different beans so you can see the way it works on various body types. Nice work Jeanne on your beautiful Yvonne! |
Spencer's Traveller Scarf | Spencer wanted a super-chunky, gigantic scarf to keep his neck and shoulders warm out in the chilly warehouse (and the windy Nevada winters!), so he chose the Traveller Scarf from Rowan Magazine 48 as his project for the Rowan Extravaganza. With a little help from Sharon (thanks, Sharon!), he had this bulky beauty completed in no time. He made the longer version, which uses 12 balls of Big Wool. |
Rachel's Jul Lava Flow Cowl | When we received the Jul patterns and hardware recently, Rachel simply fell in love! She just had to cast on for this fun cowl so that she would have an excuse to buy the Venetian Hinge clasp to go with it. Rachel used the gorgeous Blackstone Tweed yarn which is super soft and easy to work with. We've created kits for this pattern using Madelinetosh Pashmina Worsted. Extra yum! |

When knitting circular projects with the Magic Loop method, there are two things that I do to prevent ladders in my work.
The first is that I work close to the tips of my needles so I don't pull against the stitches trying to maneuver my needles. I have the stitches waiting to be worked on my left needle sitting just at the beginning of the taper to the point. Using my fingers to control the stitches, I allow only the stitch I'm about to work to move out onto the needle point. This allows me to work with little to no tension on my working stitches.
The second and more important thing is that I tighten up the first stitch each time I switch between needle tips. To do this, start from the Magic Loop home position, where the stitches are up on the needle tips (half on each tip), with the working tips are held one in front and one in back with the working yarn coming from the needle tip in the back, and the tips are pointing to the right. Pull the back needle tip out and to the right, inserting the point into the first stitch to be knit. Before you complete the stitch, gently pull the yarn so that the stitch that is now resting on the cable in the back closes up around the cable. Don't pull it too tight, just enough that there is no slack around the cable. Don't strangle the cable. Now complete the first stitch. Work the second stitch and tension the yarn firmly. Finish working across the remaining stitches tensioning normally.
For a better visual on this technique, feel free to watch this video where I demonstrate exactly how I do this.

Happy Knitting!
Terry

 | On Saturday, July 6th, we hosted a Grand Re-Opening party for our newly refurbished retail space! We've been working hard on the new look for this space for months and it was so exciting to finally share it with our local customers. We commissioned Shelli, owner of Knitterly, a fantastic yarn shop in Petaluma, CA to come and help us with our vision for the space. |
With her help, we created an amazing new shop that is twice the size of our old store and now features fabric and sewing inspiration as well as yarn.
The party was a blast! We had all kinds of activities including a sewing a project bag on sewing machines powered by bikes (courtesy of one our employee's-Skye, and her friend Andrew, who call themselves Cyclectric), tours of the new space and the warehouse, a scavenger hunt, snacks, and tons of giveaways (courtesy of Moda and Westminster Fabrics) including grabbing yarn from the Yarn Hot Tub! In all, the day was utterly fantastic and so much fun. We hope everyone who attended enjoyed themselves as much as we did! | |

We're thrilled to have celebrated our fourth year of the Beans for Brains Scholarship Program, and to have been able to award scholarships to five creative students around the country! With the help of our partners in the fiber arts industry, we have been able to award over $30,000 over the last four years to students who maintain above-average grades and who knit, crochet, or sew. This year's choice was particularly difficult, as we had a record number of qualified applicants. Thank you to everyone who applied, and to our generous sponsors for making the scholarships possible! This year's recipients were:
- Jessica, an Environmental Studies major at the University of Denver, is an accomplished sewist who made an extraordinary cocktail dress which she designed herself.
- Madison, a Pre-Med student at The Ohio State University, is both a knitter and a talented sewist - she made detailed dolls based on Greek mythology.
- Omar, a Columbia University student and decorated US Air Force Captain, taught himself to crochet and knit while deployed overseas and made a crochet baby blanket for his niece.
- Cassie of Harvard College, loves costuming and created a one-of-a-kind Disney Little Mermaid princess dress.
- Farah, our local Reno/Tahoe recipient who attends the University of Nevada-Reno, created a beautiful crocheted blanket with yarn she collected from friends and family.
Check out Kristen's blog post to see pictures of all the projects and learn more about the winners and the sponsors!
