 | If you were hoping for the second installment of Journey Of A Quilt... We are so sorry, but the quilt is on hold this month - we're still recovering from the hubbub of the holidays. Stay tuned, we should be continuing our journey in February!
In the meantime, Jeanne, who is never one for lack of projects, had fun making this adorable sewing bag inspired by the Hoopla Bag she found on the Always A Project blog and has put together an easy-to-follow tutorial for creating one of your own! |
I (Jeanne) love clever storage ideas and when I saw this charming little ditty bag I just had to give it a try! I learned a few tips that I hope will help you learn with me as we sew together. I have been saving this charming plaid fabric for a while - it's Plaid Blanket, one of the cute prints from the Lucy's Crab Shack collection by Sweetwater; I also grabbed a bit of solid linen (for stability) for my lining and off I went.
Materials:
-2 pieces of fabric cut to 14" X 22"
-6 inch embroidery hoop
-All the other sewing essentials, sewing machine, thread, iron and ironing board, pins and scissors.
Step 1: With right sides together along the 14" cut, sew ½ inch seam on both pieces of fabric, iron your seams open down the center of the tube. This shifts your seam to the middle of your piece and will place it as the back of the bag.
Step 2: Sew ½ inch seam across the bottom of your bag and lining.
Step 3: Fold your bottom up, using the width of the bag as a guide and press flat.
Step 4: Fold the tabs for your box bottom down as shown - my bag corners measure about 3 ½ inches across. Fold the second tab over together with first, and voila - they are the same width. Press them down, as you will use that line for your seaming; and off you go to seam them. I used one piece to measure the second piece, so it's simple and they are both the same.
| |
 |
Step 5: Snip the corners off with about ¼ inch allowance. I used a running stitch on my lining as shown in the picture, to lay the seam over to the inside, so it would lay a bit flatter when finished.
Step 6: Turn your outside bag right side out and leave your lining wrong side out and press everything well. Turn a ½ inch hem on the top of the bags at this point; put them together, then sew an envelope seam to finish it all off. I chose a simple zigzag stitch for my seaming, and next time I may use a high contrast thread (like black) for some more pop.

Ta-da! You are done!!! Add your embroidery hoop and a hook or a ribbon and start storing! |

Reversible Pinwheel Pieced Cap Pattern $8.95 | Looking for the perfect chic accessory for spring? Look no further! Joel Dewberry has you - and your head - covered with his Reversible Pinwheel Pieced Cap. A selection from his Eclectic Modern collection, it's a charming fitted cap with a low profile and stylish brim. We'd love it even if it were made of only one fabric, but we don't have to - it's reversible! Use a different fabric for the reverse side, turn it inside out and match a whole new selection of outfits. Check out Joel's Heirloom Fabric Collection to get some great ideas on fabric combos. As a cherry on top, you can also attach a cute fabric flower clip (instructions included) for another twist on this adorable look! | Mod Century Quilt Pattern $1.00 | Beginners and experienced quilters alike will flip over the Jenn Ski Mod Century Quilt. This ingenious, multi-colored design is made by piecing together fabric strips and using a clever cutting technique to make blocks. Each of the 63 colorful squares is completely unique, but only 13 different fabrics are used! One of our new Beans, Heather - an avid knitter but beginning quilter - is so excited about this pattern that she's already picked out her fabric. She loves the prints from the Moda Mod Century Collection, but you could use any brightly colored coordinates to make this design pop! | Twirl Skirt Pattern $3.00 | We all know little girls love to twirl...whether blowing bubbles on the lawn or floating around a ballet class, they're unstoppable! Valori Wells' Twirl Skirt is sure to please them: A full, knee-length skirt with a gathered flounce overlay and an elastic waist, this creation has the perfect amount of billow to accentuate all that twirling. It's perfect for playtime, party time, and any time in between, and looks especially cute over matching colored tights! Be sure to take a peek at Ms Wells' Wrenly collection for some whimsical prints perfect for little girls (and big ones, too!). | The Fortiny Bag Pattern $12.95 | If there's one thing we crafters know, it's that we can never have too many bags, or in too many sizes. The Fortiny Bag pattern by Tina Givens fits any bill; make the handbag to take while running errands around town, and the oversized tote for carrying your latest project to your next club meeting... or for those spontaneous outings as the weather gets warmer! The addition of D-ring hardware adds a shiny bit of sophistication. You can even customize the length of the straps to the perfect fit! | Reader Wrap Pattern $9.00 | We know many of our lucky customers got new e-readers from Santa - they were the "it" gift this season! Set yours apart from the rest and protect it in style with the Atkinson Designs' Reader Wrap. Choose a fabric that reminds you of your favorite novel, add an optional pocket for your reading glasses, and you're ready to go! Now all you have to decide - besides which book to download next - is whether to use an elastic or Velcro closure; the pattern has instructions for both! |

Grabbit Magnetic Pincushion $12.29 | Forget about your fabric pincushions - the Blue Feather Grabbit has made them a thing of the past. Just drop your pins over the Grabbit and its scooped-out bowl shape and the underlying magnet will do just that - grab them! We've all had that nightmare moment of losing a pin (or many) on the carpet. Wave the Grabbit over the mess and they're picked up in an instant. Please just try to resist testing it out on all the other small metal objects in the house! | Collins Sewing Gauge $1.79 | Measuring and marking hems can be a headache-inducing experience - just when you've got one side perfect, the opposite side runs amok! We use the Collins Sewing Gauge to keep us straight; it accurately measures hem widths, pleats and tucks as well as spacing for buttonhole and button placement making marking points a snap. It even turns into an adjustable pivoting compass for making perfect circles and scallops - and all this utility fits neatly into the palm of your hand! | Clover Chaco Liner Pen $9.50 | No more sharpening those marking pencils, or worrying that disappearing ink will fail to disappear! The Chaco Liner Pen by Clover uses a fine tip and tailor's chalk in powder form to keep your markings accurate and erasable - just brush lightly to remove. The tapered tip marks perfectly precise lines both with a ruler and when drawing curves. The pens come in four colors, and best of all, the refills simply twist into the pen tip, so you can get back to marking! |

If you've had the pleasure of visiting our fabric section, chances are Gus is the friendly Bean who helped you. Gus happened upon Jimmy Beans while with a friend who was shopping for yarn, and are we ever glad he did! He's already made a name for himself as our quilting expert - be sure to see his amazing work on display next time you're in the shop! | However, Gus hasn't always had a passion for fabric; up until about 6 years ago, his main hobby was creating stained glass art. After attending his first quilt show, he realized that he could make quilts to rival the beauty of his glass creations, and avoid cutting his poor fingers on the glass! He jumped in with both feet and immediately bought a sewing machine and signed up for classes - he jokes that in his first class, he didn't even know how to open a bobbin case!
|
But he was on his way - many of his first quilts went to charity, and as he built his quilting skills with more classes (including one from Kaffe Fassett himself!), Gus joined the Arizona Quilters Guild and became the chairperson for their Small Quilt Auction, at which he raised the most funds of any chairperson before or since. He even co-designed a quilt for their annual show in Phoenix so amazing that it ended up on the cover of a magazine!
When he's not creating stunning quilt art, Gus is spoiling his Brussels griffon, Sophie, or seeking out the next great restaurant in the Reno food scene with his partner of over 20 years. They love Reno for its changing seasons and small-town feel - and of course, for the fabric selection at Jimmy Beans! |
