When Kristen set out to create her next free design with the Shibui Linen yarn, she knew whatever she would make would be light, airy, and drapey. After weeks spent anticipating her finished design, we are excited to introduce July's Free Pattern - the Shibui Linen Vest! This vest is knit using one main color for the body and three contrasting colors for the stripes along the top and bottom. The pattern provides directions for two sizes, along with tips for altering the pattern to best fit your shape! We hope you love it as much as we do! Now, you may be wondering about the yarn Kristen chose for this month's design. Well,
Shibui Linen is one of Shibui's latest creations. It's 100% linen, which is a super-strong but incredibly lightweight fiber made from the flax plant.
| |
 |
Linen is well-known for its ability to keep you cool in hot weather and for softening up when worn. Shibui Linen's chain construction make it perfect for those lightweight tops, summer scarves, and shawls. It creates an ethereal fabric that moves with your body and flatters everyone! |
Because linen creates such a drapey fabric, as shown in the Shibui Linen Vest, it is best used for items that you want to have a free-flowing shape. Its fibers are not nearly as elastic as wool tends to be, so using it for the correct type of project is very important. Allie, our Yarn Logistics Maven, is currently using the Shibui Linen to knit a Color Affection Shawl (one of the most popular patterns on Ravelry at the moment). This is the perfect kind of project for a linen yarn because it will create a lovely draped fabric.
If Linen isn't quite your thing, we just received two new-to-us yarns from Shibui! Staccato is a fingering weight blend of merino wool and silk that creates just the right amount of drape while providing a subtle sheen! The Baby Alpaca DK is a stunningly soft collection with luxurious colors and a generous amount of yardage! Either of these exquisite yarns are sure to find a place in your stash or in your next project! |

We have so many new patterns and books it's hard to choose just a few. Here are some of our favorite things...
We've always had a soft spot for Jared Flood and who can blame us? We can't resist his trendy, yet simple designs, so it should be no surprise that we have anxiously awaited new patterns. One of the latest patterns we brought on is Quill which instantly caught our eye. Flood modeled his design after a traditional Haapsalu shawl but added his own modern twist. Hap's were traditionally worn by the working women of Shetland during the cold, harsh weather of the Northern Scottish Isles. Dress it up or down and you'll have a new favorite hand knit!
If you love the simple, rustic feel of Jared Flood's patterns you will adore the Inversion Cardigan. Interestly enough, this cardigan can be worn right side up or upside down! We also love the fact that this design will fit all shapes and sizes. With an open front, this cardigan will certainly flatter any shape. We recommend using Imperial Yarn Columbia 2-ply to create a hand spun, natural feel to a rustic-chic cardi!
Hannah Fettig of Knitbot is another one of those designers we just can't get enough of. Many of us at Jimmy Beans Wool agree that simple and classic elements make for the perfect garment. Of course, the small details are what blow us away so, of course, we can't help but love our latest Knitbot pattern additions: the Spring Ribbed Cardigan and the Breezy Cardigan. Both are simple but absolutely timeless! To the left of each pattern are the yarns we suggest to use if you'd like to knit up either of these gems.
In addition to gorgeous new patterns, we also have some new editions of our favorite publications!
The bright cover of the Premier Issue of Noro Magazine Fall 2012 instantly caught our eye. Bright striping and unique designs flood these pages, captivating us in the mastery of colors Noro is known for. We especially love the crocheted slippers in Kureyon and the toe up crisscrossing cable socks in Taiyo Sock. We've also added 25 essential projects to our queue from the newest Knit Wear. This issue is all about simple garments with small details that bump an otherwise basic knit to the next level. We just love it!
As if that's not enough, one of our favorite magazines, Knitscene, has not one but two brand new issues: Accessories and Fall 2012. Accessories is full of small knits and great stash-busting ideas for one to two skein projects. Although it seems crazy to start a sweater project when the entire country is sweltering in 100 degree heat, we'd like to wear our finished products in the appropriate weather. So, we dove right into the Fall 2012 sweater-tastic issue!
What's also really neat about the Knitscene Fall 2012 issue is it includes a wonderful design called the Terra Linda Cardigan by Rosemary (Romi) Hill, an up-and-coming knitwear designer residing in Gardnerville, Nevada (just a short ride from us)! We've been in awe of her Shawl Series since her patterns hit our shelves! If more of Romi's Designs are what you seek, be sure to check out her 7 Small Shawls Series "Home is Where the Heart Is" which is now available for pre-order as an eBook! We've collaborated with Romi to bring you the yarns you need to create these projects so check out the Shawl #1 kit where you can pre-order the yarn and hard copy of the pattern! We are so excited to be working with Romi!

 | Cascade is one of those yarn companies that we turn to when we need a yarn that is going to perform with the same consistency every single time while being beautiful as well! What you may not know about Cascade is that beyond their 220 line - and hundreds of color options - they are a unique company with a wide range of yarns that will amaze even the most experienced knitter! There is something to be said for tried and true, but its not usually as exciting as innovation and creativity. Well, Cascade has both of those things! From a stunning array of free patterns to compliment their yarns to their recent crop of new fibers, Cascade never ceases to impress us!
|
Recently, Cascade surpassed all of our other yarn lines as the #1 seller with 220 Superwash leading the pack- probably for its generous yardage, beautiful color range, and awesome price! Their newest additions, Casablanca and Sitka are truly stunning yarns that are perfect for fall and winter knits! Casablanca is a stunning self-striping merino, silk, and mohair blend. Rachel loved it so much that she had to cast on right away for Tanis Gray's newest free pattern featuring this yarn - the Urban Lace Infinity Scarf (shown above). Sitka is a stunning single-ply merino and silk blend that boasts just the right amount of sheen and softness. We also just started carrying the Cascade Greenland, a superwash Merino aran weight that is perfect for a variety of knits, especially those that need to be durable and washable!
If you aren't ready to start knitting with wool quite yet, there are several lightweight Cascade yarns on sale! Both the Cotton Rich DK and the Pima Tencel are amazing yarns for summertime projects but, sadly, they are being discontinued to make way for other brand new yarns for Fall. However, because of that, they are both available at 50% off in our sale outlet! The Pima Tencel is perfect for the charming Anouk baby jumper (a FREE pattern from Knitty) and the Cotton Rich DK is great for the summer weight Mie Sweater from Knitscene magazine!
And if Cascade isn't already awesome enough, they are offering a $5 off coupon for those of you attending the Stitches Midwest market! We'll be at the market with a booth for the Stitch Red campaign! Booth #'s 207 & 209! Please stop by and say "Hi" to Jimmy, Casey, and Sandy if you are in the Chicago-land area! |

 | Health-conscious Brooklyn Tweed blogger and designer, Jared Flood, has created one of the most popular patterns in Knit Red called the "Multi Pattern Mittens" - with over 220 likes on Ravelry! In fact, one of the first Knit Red designs the ladies here at Jimmy Beans Wool made were these exact mittens!
Not only an entrepreneur and trendy knitwear designer but also an extremely active guy, Jared Flood recently changed his dietary habits significantly and asserts it was one of the best choices he has ever made.
| He now prepares about 90% of his meals at home so he knows exactly what is in them. This gives him a great excuse to hone in on his culinary skills, too! In addition to his daily fruit smoothies and effort to eat as much fresh fish as he can, Jared makes it a point to go for a run three to four days a week. He sure is setting a fantastic example for knitters nationwide!

Cherie's Wedding Shawl | One of our Beans, Cherie, is getting married this July. Cherie really wanted to make herself a wedding shawl, but between working at the shop and planning her wedding, she couldn't find the time. However, one of our other Beans, Gina May, offered to knit a shawl for her as a wedding gift knowing how much it would mean to Cherie to have one (how sweet is that?!). Gina May found the Rosewood Shawl by Silvia Bentancur on Ravelry and used the Audrey yarn by Schaefer. Even though we no longer carry that yarn, Madelinetosh Prairie or Hand Maiden Sea Silk are wonderful substitutes. |
Shevawn's Thendara Shawl | In her continuing quest to knit all the patterns out of Westknits Book 3, Shevawn cast on the wonderful Thendara Shawl. She can't even express how much she loves this pattern! It's easy to follow and the triangular shape lends itself to drape correctly on the neck. She also likes the fact that once you get to the last section of the pattern, you can keep knitting/increasing until you run out of yarn. So, you can make it as big (or as little) as you want or as your stash dictates. |
Jeanne's Turkish Bed Socks for Bethany | We can't believe this is Jeanne's third pair of Turkish Bed Socks she's made - and she already says that she's planning to make more! As many of you know, Jeanne is our resident sock knitter - she loves the feel of hand-knit socks on her feet. She loves how super quick this pattern is to knit up and gives this project a triple thumbs up! |
