This month's Lorna's Laces Limited Edition color was created by Shevawn, our resident desert explorer! She always seems to come back on Monday with some crazy tale of her latest adventure.
One of her favorite places to backpack and camp is the High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trail area in the Black Rock Desert. When she ventures out there, she rarely encounters another person but often sees wild horses! On one such trip with some friends, they stumbled across a herd of fifty while crossing a valley. In an attempt to avoid disturbing them, they moved upward to try and go around but suddenly the stallion charged her group. Shevawn and her pals had to run super-fast to get away but the stallion was right on their heels! The stallion finally backed off and Shevawn and her friends made it out safely, which earned Shevawn the nickname here at JBW (courtesy of Sandy), " Runs with Horses".
It's also the perfect name for this beautiful desert inspired color of cerulean blues, turquoise greens, dusty purples, and just a splash of heavy patina! What better way to end the summer than with a color celebrating travel, adventure, and the great outdoors!

Look familiar? "London 2012" is inspired by the Olympic rings! |
Just in case you missed our last newsletter, we have a very special colorway on top of "Runs With Horses" which commemorates the London 2012 games!
To support Team USA during their time at the Olympics, we've teamed up with Lorna's Laces to create a limited edition color inspired by the games in London.
|
It's called London 2012 and is available only in Shepherd Sock, Shepherd Worsted, and Honor. Fun, right? But that's not the most fun part! For every medal Team USA wins in the Olympics between now and the closing ceremonies on August 12th, we will drop the price of each hank, in all 3 weights, of the "London 2012" colorway!
Here's the deal:
- for every gold medal the US wins, we'll drop the price of each hank by $.05.
- for every silver medal, we'll drop the price $.03.
- and for every bronze medal, we'll drop the price a penny.
We'll be keeping track for the next two and a half weeks, bringing the price down as Team USA celebrates victory. We hope that you will join us in celebrating the games because with "Medal Madness", the athletes won't be the only ones that win! And remember, it doesn't matter how much the yarn is when you place your order - we'll adjust the price and ship it out right after the closing ceremonies. We promise!
*As you probably surmised, we will be shipping all of the skeins out after the closing ceremonies on August 12th. The final prices will be applied to all orders placed between now and then! (And remember, too, that this is a limited edition color - once we sell out, we're out!)* |

 | We've long been big fans of Laura Nelkin's work. Her beaded jewelry kits and lace patterns have inspired us to go where we had never gone before... knitting with beads! As such, we just received her two latest jewelry kits - the Mudra Necklace and the Mudra Cuff. Totally inspired, Rachel cast on the Mudra necklace right away and finished it in an evening (with a 3 yr old at home, that's just the kind of project i could handle!). When we ordered these kits, we got to talking with Laura about some of her recent adventures, primarily the class she recently filmed with Craftsy: "Knitting With Beads". The class includes three patterns and covers a variety of related topics including different techniques to add beads to your knits, placement of beads on a non-beaded piece, following charts that use beads, nupps in lace knitting, and much more.
|
We were so fascinated by her experience (i mean, who doesn't want to be a tv star?!) that we figured you might be too... For example, did you know that Laura and Craftsy filmed the intro and conclusion last? Apparently, those parts are the toughest to film, so - like us - they procrastinate until the end! Haha. Wanna read more? Check out the blog post!
Shortly after we spoke with Laura, we asked Craftsy how we could help promote Laura's "Knitting With Beads" class (after all, Laura's one of us - a designer/knitter/artist trying to make a living in the world of fiber - and we want to support our community!). And you know what? Craftsy was not only nice enough to offer to offer JBW customers 25% off of Laura's class, but they also wanted to do a special JBW-style giveaway. Here's how the giveaway works: everyone who purchases Laura Nelkin's "Knitting With Beads" class between now and Saturday, August 4th at the 25% off discounted price will be entered to win their class for free!
(And no, we're not making $ off of these classes - we just love Laura's kits and want her to be successful so she keeps making more!)

At the end of March we welcomed a new friend to our Lorna's Laces collection: a new yarn we had been anxiously awaiting from the moment we heard Lorna's was planning it. Solemate and Shepherd Sport came together to create this phenomenal weight so without further ado, we're proud to announce the arrival of Sportmate!
Lorna's love for Solemate and sport weight yarns sparked the inspiration to bring Solemate's sibling into the wonderful world of yarn, and boy are we glad they did! This new kid on the block comes in 100 gram hanks of 270 yards of pure superwash merino wool and Outlast Viscose that is sure to leave you stunned! You might be wondering to yourself right about now, "Outlast Viscose?" We were a bit confused at first too, so here's what we found in our internet surfing. The Outlast Viscose was originally developed for NASA to help regulate temperature. This cutting edge technology changes materials that absorb, store and release heat for maximum thermal comfort. We like to think of it as the "Goldie Locks" technology - it helps to keep you not too hot, not too cold, but just right. P.S. Outlast is also the material that gives Solemate and Sportmate the elegant sheen that we love so much.
While we're introducing newbies, we also wanted to share with you the brand new Fall 2012 Lorna's colors! Welcome Gentleman's Frippery! Apart from the names of both the collection and colors - which we absolutely adore - we are beside ourselves with the new semi-solid and variegated color-ways. From the deep, sophisticated teal of Waistcoat to the tonal greens of Ascot, we can't resist this new collection. In the favorable chance that you've already fallen in love with Sportmate, Gentleman's Frippery is available in this fresh Lorna's addition! |

All this talk of adventures and travelling had us all thinking about our favorite knits to take with us when we're on the go. The one thing we all seem to have in common is that we bring our knitting and crochet (even spinning) projects with us when we go! All of our beans agree, knitting and crochet projects are essential when traveling, just be sure to pack something small and light!
- Always make a copy of your pattern. On her latest camping trip, Shevawn forgot to and, boy, did her hard copy of Jared Flood's Juneberry Triangle get destroyed. Want extra piece of mind? Chicken Boot's hand-dandy pattern holders are perfect for storing your pattern and for tracking your place. Plus, these holders fold up into a triangle for easy reading - it's perfect for airplane tray tables!
- Ziplock baggies are your best [reusable] friend. Throw your stitch markers, cable needles, highlighter tape, etc. all in one spot and close it up! Want something more colorful? Check out the brand new eggplant color of Namaste's Oh Snap pouches. I'm also a big fan of their Small Pouches which boast the three "C's": cheap, cute, and colorful!
- Carry a few different small but fairly easy projects. That way, if you finish one project - you have the supplies to start a new one. Also, smaller projects like socks and hats are easier to carry around than say a sweater or an afghan! I took a trip to Seattle and was able to not only start but finish my Seedling Hat over the course of a weekend.
If you travel a lot with your knitting, you already know that the right accessories are important for conserving space and weight! Here are a few more items that we love to have when we're on the move!

 | "Runs With Horses" was designed by Shevawn, whose three-year anniversary with Jimmy Beans Wool is later this month! She's done just about everything here from writing and designing newsletters to being our Backorders and Inventory Lead. Shevawn started working here after coming back from a six month stay in India living and working on a farm. She just can't say no to an adventure! As a new feature of the "Meet a Bean" section, we asked Shevawn what a few of her favorite things have been for the month: |
"First of all, I love, love, love Tiny Owl Knits, especially her Deer with Antlers hat pattern. I just adore whimsical knits and her patterns take the cake! Speaking of whimsical, I'm also loving the latest trend of animal motifs like the Nocturnal Pullover from Knitscene Fall '12. The front features an owl motif created from simple yarn overs. Clever!
Of course, I am obsessed with robots and monsters so the Cloud 9 Monsterz fabric is just about the cutest thing I've ever seen. Last but certainly not least is "Runs With Horses". Lorna's Laces did such a fantastic job with the color combination I chose - I'm in love. I already bought a skein of Lion and Lamb to knit up Kristen's Donner Pass Cowl. I'm loving it!"
