There's nothing quite like sock knitting in the summertime when lightweight sock yarn is a much needed break from heavier yarns. For many knitters, however, turning a heel is the one part of sock knitting that keeps most people away. Nonetheless, Jeanne, our sock knitting wiz of the west, shows you how easily it's done in this instructional video! Turning a heel is not only used for just socks but for short row work, shaping garments, and even knitting stuffed creatures that require feet - like the fun monsters found in Rebecca Danger's The Big Book of Knitted Monsters! Here's how it's done:
1. Slip the first stitch and knit only half of the stitches on your needle.
2. Knit the next stitch, knit two together, and knit one.
3. You'll now have two leftover stitches on your needle but leave them there and turn your knitting around to the "wrong side".
4. Slip the first stitch and purl three stitches. Now, purl two together.
5. You'll have two purls left on your needle but leave them there and turn your knitting around to the "right side".
6. Slip the first stitch and work the rest of your stitches up to the gap on your needle.
7. Knit the two stitches that surround the gap together and knit your last stitch.
8. Turn your work and slip the first stitch. Purl across to the gap.
9. Purl the two stitches that surround the gap together and purl your last stitch.
You have just turned your first sock heel! Now you can knit all the socks in the world from cozy bed socks to hardy hiking socks! As always, please refer to your sock pattern as it may differ in instructions for turning your heel.

New Colors
 Magnolia Leaf Tosh DK $19.20
|
As soon as I managed to convince myself that I needed to harness more self-control when it comes to yarn, a big box of Madelinetosh arrived to the shop, full of brand new colorways in every weight. I begged Kathy to hold me back as I fawned over each color. I mean, wouldn't the Alizarin in Prairie look just gorgeous knitted up in Shetland Trader's Aestlight Shawl? How about a skein of Magnolia Leaf for a stunning pair of Oak Grove Mitts by Never Not Knitting? Churchmouse's Beaded Beret in the lovely neutral French Grey in Tosh Sock? I really can't stop myself at this point...there's too many great colors and with names like Jelly Sandals, Antique Lace, and Smokey Orchid, how can anyone resist?
|
Available in: Pashmina, Prairie, Tosh DK, Tosh Lace, Tosh Merino DK, Tosh Merino Light, Tosh Sock, and Tosh Vintage!
These new colors are slowly arriving in every weight of Madelinetosh yarns. We are still waiting on the following weights to arrive in the new colors but we expect them to be in very soon! Pre-order yours today in Tosh Lace, Tosh Merino Light, and Tosh Vintage.

Noro Yarn and Pattern Books
Bring your knitting to life with Noro! The latest additions to our Noro line contain all of the distinctive features of Noro that we've grown to love. Vivid colors, long color repeats, and combinations of unique fibers are all present in summer yarns with brand new pattern support.
I, for one, am head over heels for Silk Garden Lite, the DK weight companion to Silk Garden. With mind-boggling color arrangements, striated-dyed effects, and a smooth-to-the-touch feel, Silk Garden Lite is a Noro lover's dream. Just a tad bit thinner than the worsted weight, this yarn has the same silk/kid mohair/lamb's wool blend. This, of course, means the same rich saturated colors, the same cozy warmth, and the same haloed appearance. Silk Garden Lite is perfect for just about anything; from color-tastic shawls you'll want to wrap yourself in and never come out of to lusciously lacey cardigans that will put a smile on your face and that extra bounce in your step.
Taiyo Sock is the lovely fingering weight counterpart to its squishy big brother, Taiyo. It's a scrumptious roll of colorful yarn sushi, complete with 437 yards of self-striping goodness. Half of the fiber content is cotton while the other half is a blend of wool, nylon, and silk, making for the perfect combination of breathability, durability, and stretch. Taiyo Sock will feel smooth on your fingers and, of course, you'll love watching the colors change before your eyes. This fiber is great for energetic shawls, peppy socks, and serene tops. Wouldn't this yarn be so much fun to use for a Featherweight Cardigan by Knitbot?
By far, the most interesting yarn that's been released is Nobori. It's a heavy worsted yarn but light as a feather. It's stranded with white nylon tape but super soft to the skin. If you're looking for a superbly unique fiber, Nobori is it! What's really interesting about this yarn is the "white space" in between the color stripings (due to the ribbon) so the self-striping effect has a unique twist and eye-catching white speckles. Check it out on Knitting Fever's website here.
When you have so much lovely new yarn available, you know great pattern support isn't too far behind. The latest Noro Pattern Magazine for Spring 2011, Vol. 29 is here and full of fun and fanciful designs, showcasing these new yarns and, of course, paying homage to the classics like this Lace Sweater knit in Taiyo or this drapey Kureyon Sock Sweater (bonus! it's on sale)!
Of course, everyone in the shop has been all a twitter about Noro's latest book, Knit Noro. Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Its Noro-tastic beam of awesomeness has pulled in every knitter who has dared open its cover. Jeanne and Sandy were taken the very first day it came into the shop! No wonder, since it's full of spectacular cardigans, cozy geometric afghans, and wonderfully geometric hats and scarves.
If you haven't tried your hand at Noro yarns yet, this is the perfect time to start! As a Noro fanatic myself, however, I must forewarn you that the Noro rabbit hole is surprisingly deep but oh so wonderful! :)
Noro Nobori will be gracing the Wool Watcher stage on Friday, June 24th so keep your eyes peeled on the puppy!

What's New?
We have a few new yarns, patterns, and things to update you on... we hope you find the update helpful!
Malabrigo Book Series - Book Three $19.95
|
Book Three of the highly anticipated issue of the Malabrigo Book Series went beyond all of our expectations here at the shop. From daring lace shawls to flirty pullovers, this book has it all. Something for everyone, there's OXO cablings, scalloped edgings, diamond laces, even an adorable baby cardigan! Not to mention three different patterns by Stephen West! The cozy cowls are also worth mentioning like this awesome Twisted Cowl and, of course, the cover Neckwarmer done in Malabrigo Rasta. I just finished knitting a shawl with Silky Merino so now I've been eyeing all of the pattern support for this luscious yarn.
|
Top Shelf Totes Yarn Pop - Owls Medium $20.00
|
New fabrics for Yarn Pops? Yes, please! We've added three colorful printed fabrics to our Yarn Pop collection in the medium and large sizes: all-seeing owls, graceful butterflies and a fun little family of elephants. For those unaware of the magical properties of Yarn Pops, these sturdy canvas project bags feature a zipper to seal your project inside and are made of hardy cotton canvas that's machine washable. The most genius feature is, of course, the grommets (metal rings) on the side of each bag. These rings allow you to strand your yarn through as you work on your project (i.e. no more tangles or undone balls of yarn)! The small bags have one grommet while the medium and large sizes feature two (perfect for multicolor projects and the like).
Grab a yarn pop or two at a fantastic price on Monday, June 27th on Wool Watcher!

 Interweave Knitscene Magazine - '11 Summer $7.99
|
The 2011 Summer issue of Knitscene has been one difficult magazine to keep in stock and, of course, once you see the designs, it's not hard to imagine why. In fact, almost every Bean here in the shop bought themselves a copy when it came in. Terry has already cast on her Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sport Mayville Cardigan using one of our Limited Edition colorways! With whimsical mini shawls like the Figurehead to sexy tanks and comfy tees, this issue really is a treasure for any knitter's library. I really want to make this Embassy Scarf, knit in the lusciously delicate Malabrigo Lace Baby Merino yarn! Yum!
|
Kathleen Taylor Fearless Fair Isle Knitting $24.95
|
Finally, a book that tells it like it is! Fair Isle, although surely requiring concentration and dedication, is anything but scary. Kathleen Taylor's latest book, Fearless Fair Isle Knitting, provides step by step instructions and helpful techniques to get you over the "Oh, I could never do fair isle" hump. Of course, the patterns included in this book are easy enticement enough, from beginner projects (ahem, no steeking!) like hats, gloves, and bags, intermediate designs like fanciful dresses (swoon!), to the more advanced stuff like the Mini Mochi hooded vest and socks. You'll really love the Dragon Shawl that's saved for last - it's a stranded work of art!
|
Victoria S Beaded Stitch Markers - Flag $24.00
|
Match your knitting to fit your mood with new handmade stitch markers from our very own, Victoria! She's created a wide range of beaded stitch markers to fit any mood and occasion! Sharon snapped up the adorable Panda Love set, Kathy bought Kitty Contentment and Sandy always has her Girlfriends by her side. I, for one, am still deciding between Monkey Fun and Penguin Peace...they're all just so adorable! Her latest ones are perfect for summertime knitting from celebrating 4th of July with American Flags to knitting in the garden with super cute ladybugs!
|
Artyarns Beaded Silk Light Yarn $44.00
|
More yumminess from Artyarns, this time in DK form! Beaded Silk Light is the appetizing answer to the unfortunately discontinued Beaded Silk yarn. Hand dyed 100% silk, this yarn is pre-strung with small glass beads, which makes for romantic fabrics and gorgeous open work shawls. Available in six tantalizing colors, you'll absolutely love working with this incredibly soft yarn with a wonderful drape and incredible depth of color. The bonus projects from Artyarns' website will be sure to get your mouth watering and eager to cast on!
|
JC Briar Charts Made Simple $17.95
|
For many knitters, reading charts is like reading some ancient tablet, written in a language long ago extinct. Charts Made Simple by JC Briar is the Rosetta Stone of knitting! This book will keep challenging you, no matter what your skill set, and will even help you correct somewhat bad chart-reading habits along the way. What really helped me from this book was spotting your stitches visually (what does a completed ssk look like as opposed to k2tog) so you can track your place by sight. With great visuals, simple yet thorough answers, and an incredible wealth of knitting knowledge, this book is sure to please knitters from beginners to advanced.

Here's a tiny sampling of our handiwork this month...!! Click on any of the thumbnails to take a closer look or check out all of our projects!
Rock Island Shawls | Jeanne and Sandy are having such a great time knitting their Rock Island Shawls by Jared Flood! The good Joes that they are, they split a hank of Lorna's Laces Helen's Lace in Jared Flood's Commentary color, Grand Street Ink, since the pattern only calls for 600-680 yards of fingering weight yarn. How cool is that? They are trying their hands at different needle sizes because of gauge - Sandy went with a US 6 and Jeanne with a US 7. They are almost done with the edging and then they will pick up their stitches and start the body of the shawl. I can't wait to see the finished pieces! |
Amber's Shapely Cowl | Amber got a jumpstart on her winter knitting and finished this lovely Shapely Cowl by Indigirl, using only one hank of Misti Alpaca Tonos Worsted. The subtle tone on tone variation of the Tonos Worsted is simply gorgeous and the simple lace pattern is stunning to match. And, of course, Amber looks as cute as ever with it on! |
Bethany's Hug Monster | This little monster is as nice as he is cute! Bethany whipped this little guy up in no time in two different colors of Blue Sky Alpaca's super fun Multi Cotton yarn! Her good friends just had a baby so this rambunctious creature was made to keep him snuggly and warm in his crib. Always the creative one, Bethany knit him as she went along so there is, unfortunately for us, no pattern! However, if you like super cute monsters with tons of personality, be sure to check out Rebecca Danger's The Big Book of Knitted Monsters, which has more than enough knitting patterns for creatures of all shapes and sizes! |
Jeanne's Looking Glass Sweater | Jeanne's knitting skills never cease to amaze me! She just completed this absolutely gorgeous Looking Glass Sweater, designed by Kathryn Ashley-Wright and, boy, do I want to knit one for myself now!! The top is adorned with four rows of little windows that show off Noro's Silk Garden beautifully and give it an amazing 3D effect. Jeanne used one of her stash yarns for the body, Rowan's Cashsoft Aran but recommends Debbie Bliss' Cashmerino Aran as a suitable substitute. This project is the perfect way to show off fun variegated yarns like Noro or Lorna's Laces against a solid backdrop. Jeanne rocks! |
The Dudester Scarf | Ailene knit this lovely classic scarf, the The Dudester Scarf for a surprise gift for her uncle. This scarf pattern is so cool! It's very manly - but could easily be worn by a gal, too - and designed to be extra wide so it can be worn flat or tucked away in a coat or suit. It's dressy with formal work clothes but can be easily worn with any casual wear. Ailene chose Lana Grossa's luscious and soft Carezza yarn which she loved working with! Here's Bethany holding it up for us! The dude abides... |
Malabrigo Ostrich | Amber has been on a fiber stuffed toy kick lately, making up all sorts of cute little creatures in zero time flat. This little one is found in Malabrigo's latest pattern book, Book Three, and takes two different colors of Worsted Merino. An ostrich that is oh so adorable - not to mention oh so soft, Amber had a great time knitting him up! |
Veyla Mitts | Everyone in the shop has fallen head over heels for these fingerless gloves Jeanne knit for her daughter, Shelly. They are so feminine and classy that they can be worn anywhere from having your morning cup of coffee to dining at a fancy restaurant. The pattern is from Ysolda Teague's Whimsical Little Knits Book 2 but it is also sold as a separate pattern called Veyla. Jeanne used one skein of Madelinetosh Tosh Sock in the color Filigree, which looks absolutely gorgeous! I'm so jealous that I'm already looking over a copy of the pattern for myself... |
Erika's Amigurumi Dolphin | Another adorable amigurumi creation, this time done by Erika in Stitch Nation's Bamboo Ewe. This little guy was also made out of Aba Paula Rimoli's Amigurumi Toy Box, like Amber's Narwhale! So cute! Here he is swimming through the air and hanging out with his best buddy, the Unicorn. |
Amber's Magical Unicorn | Yay! Unicorns!!! Several of us in the shop are a bit obsessed with unicorns. They're just so magical and majestic! So, of course, once Amber spotted this pattern out of Ana Paula Rimoli Amigurumi Toy Box, she just had to make it...immediately. It turned out ever so magical and awesome [like Amber] and everyone has been trying to sneak away with this guy for keeps! |
Savannah Dune Wrap | Rowan sent us a trunk show of the latest knits from their spring/summer 2011 collection and we couldn't be more thrilled! Sandy and I had a great time trying the garments on and modeling away, even if some of them weren't really our size! However, this drapey cardigan, found in Rowan's Savannah Collection book, is meant to be a bit oversized so you can wear it pinned up or open. I love how the Savannah yarn felt on my skin and it looks awesome knitted up! I'm in love! |
