In my first few years as a knitter, I was terrified of seaming. I mean, if it can be done on circulars or double points - why knit any other way? Of course, that notion didn't last too long, especially when so many beautiful patterns that are knit flat started to show up on my door. It also doesn't help if you have fabulous co-workers on your side to teach and encourage you every step along the way! Hence, Jeanne once again came to the rescue with this fabulous instructional video on how to do the mattress stitch (a.k.a invisible vertical and horizontal seaming on sockinette stitch). Although Jeanne used the fabulous Churchmouse Turkish Bed Socks as the shining example in this video, you can apply this stitch to any stockinette style garment, including sweaters, hats, and gloves!
1. Start with both of your blocked pieces lying side by side.
1. Begin with the purl section of your work and pull your yarn through a few of the purl bumps.
2. Turn your piece around and go back the other way through the same purl bumps which locks in your end.
3. Now, place your tapestry needle through one of your corners in your knitted vertical piece and pull your yarn through.
4. Turn your piece over and start at any end you feel comfortable with (or what your pattern calls for).
5. Place your darning needle in at the corner which joins the two pieces together and pull your yarn through.
6. Weave the yarn through one stitch down, grab the two vertical 'legs', go up one row and reach in between the two stockinette stitches.
7. Grab the bar that is in between the stitches and pull through.
8. Keep working back into the bars, pulling your yarn through which creates an 'invisible' faux stockinette!
How cool is that? You now have mastered the invisible mattress stitch! Now, go on and knit some bed socks, sleeves, and anything else your stockinette heart desires! |

 Frog Tree Pediboo $14.40
|
Are you an environmental and socially conscious knitter? Then our newest yarn, Frog Tree's Pediboo, will be right up your alley! Pediboo is a delightfully squishy and soft yarn made from 80% Merino Wool and 20% Bamboo. Processed in the viscose method to give this yarn strength and durability, Pediboo is a wonderful choice for more hard-wearing garments.
Not only are we super excited to start carrying such a beautiful sock yarn (that's machine washable!) but we're also very excited to start working with Frog Tree, a family owned and operated business since the 90's. One of the more unique aspects of this company is that they are a non-for-profit business that is geared towards supporting fair trade organizations. So not only are you buying beautiful yarn, you are also supporting a great cause!
|
You'll love the look and feel of this yarn, with its silky softness and sheen and its lovely color palette. One skein of Pediboo will make a pair of women's medium socks and two skeins will knit up larger sizes. Not a sock knitter, but dying to try out this yarn? No matter, I'm actually looking at this yarn myself for a lacy shawl...or perhaps even a featherweight cardigan!

Tough Love Sock Yarn
As our love affair with sock yarns continues to grow, we couldn't just stop at Pediboo, could we? SweetGeorgia Yarns is another company we've just started a great friendship with! Felicia Lo, the owner of SweetGeorgia Yarns, actually had an educational background in pharmaceutical science, communication design, photography, and textile arts - talk about being well-rounded! Hailing from Vancouver, Canada, this spectacular artisan yarn company individually dyes their yarns by hand - creating color blends with personality, boldness, and "unapologetic color". As you can see, the color-ways speak for themselves, but we did want to briefly introduce the first line we have started to carry from SweetGeorgia...

Here's a tiny sampling of our handiwork this month!! Click on any of the thumbnails to take a closer look or check out all of our projects!
He Who Must Not Be Named Cowl | Sharon was so excited about July's Limited Edition colorway, He Who Must Not Be Named, she nabbed one skein of the Lion and Lamb and cast on that very same night! Two days later, she came in with this lovely Donner Pass cowl, designed by our co-worker Kristen. I love how this color way scatters all of the different colors - it looks amazing! Although most of this color-way is now sold out, Baby Me Boo would be the perfect substitute for this cowl! |
Kristen's Larch Shawl | Here is Kristen's finished shawl of our first JBW Knit-A-Long! Thank you to everyone who participated! Be sure to send us your finished project picture! We'd love to see how it turned out! For this KAL, we chose Tinks and Frogs Rue Larch shawl pattern, found on ravelry - using only hank of Shepherd Sock. This KAL was to commemorate our 10th year in business, so Kristen used the limited edition color for June - Endless Possibilities. This color is no longer available, but the color way Rainbow is a great alternative! |
Bethany's Larch Shawl | Bethany also participated in our first Knit-a-Long! Here is her beautiful Larch pattern! Using the same needle size as Kristen, Bethany's shawl turned out a a tad bit larger since she's a very loose knitter! This was Bethany's first shawl - believe or not - and she did a fantastic job! Way to go, Bethany! |
Sandy's Dragon Shawl | Sandy, always the intrepid knitter, has cast on her fair-isle dragon shawl from Kathleen Taylor's new book, Fearless Fair-Isle Knitting. She chose to substitute the yarn that the pattern called for with Cascade's 220 Heathers. This is going to be absolutely gorgeous and Sandy has been grazing through! More pictures to come to show her progress throughout! |
Henry the Kureyon Hippo | Sharon has been on a stash-bustin' mission lately and had to use up some leftover Kureyon from her Painted Diamond Bag she knit up last year. After searching on Ravelry, she found this oh-so-cute hippo hippo hippo and went to town. She said it was super easy to crochet up and made a perfect project to finish in just a few hours. Instead of stuffing, Sharon chose to use rice and leftover silk yarn to fill the body and legs to make it more bottom heavy. So cute! |
Aestlight Shawl | Sandy's good friend Barbara knit up this elegant Shetland Trader's Aestlight Shawl. She used a yarn that we no longer carry - Fleece Artist's Merino 2/6 but any fingering weight yarn will work just fine! I'd try Madelinetosh's Prairie or Hand Maiden's Sea Silk. This is so gorgeous and I love the panelled section at the bottom! |
Goodale Cardigan | It's finished! Leanne completed the Goodale Cardigan for Bethany, who absolutely loves it (who wouldn't?)! Bethany looks adorable in it and I love the color she chose! Leanne knit this cute little cardi up in Classic Elite's Magnolia yarn! The best part? The pattern only called for five balls for Bethany's size! |
Leanne's Effortless Cardigan | Everyone was simply head over heels for Leanne's Effortless Cardigan, knit in Green Line DK. It's comfy, warm, and stylish - everything you want in a cardigan! She can leave it open for the fall and cool summer nights and close it with a shawl pin for more colder days. The big surprise was how soft the Green Line DK came out to be after blocked! Unfortunately, this yarn is being discontinued, but Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sport will work just as well! |
Leanne's Top Down Mitts | Leanne's been on a knitting roll lately, what with her Effortless Cardigan and Bethany's Goodale Cardigan all finished! Now, she's working on her top-down mitts from Kristina McGowan's book Modern Top Down Knitting! Using four balls of Be Sweet's lusciously soft Bamboo yarn, she's almost done with her first mitt already! Leanne absolutely loves working with this yarn - she says it's smooth to the touch, oh-so-soft, and a joy to knit with. |
Jeanne's Liesl | How beautiful is Jeanne's latest knit from Liesl pattern by Cocoknits? This spectacular knit kept Jeanne sane and calm through a tough time, which makes this even better! Plus, she looks awesome wearing it! Jeanne used seven skeins of Louet's Euroflax Sport but recommends any hardwearing DK yarn such as Elsebeth Lavold's Hempathy, Tahki Stacy Charles' Cotton Classic or Blue Sky Alpaca's Skinny Cotton. |
