The art of crochet often plays second fiddle to knitting, even though it's just as an engaging of a craft as knitting is. If you don't know how to crochet or you are a crocheter looking to spice up your skill set, learn how to Tunisian Crochet (also commonly known as the Afghan Stitch) with Jeanne! As always, the Queen of Craft provides easy step-by-step instructions on getting the basics of this useful stitch down and onto your hooks! Since Tunisian Crochet requires longer crochet hooks to accommodate large number of stitches at one time (more so than regular crochet hooks), Jeanne recommends the versatile Denise Interchangeable Crochet Hook Set that includes everything you need to have in order begin crocheting Tunisian style!
1. To begin, create a slip knot, put your crochet hook through the loop of the slip knot, and begin to chain (just like you normally would when beginning any crochet project).
2. After chaining the number of stitches you need for your project or swatch (remember, the loop on the hook counts as a stitch!), begin to work back across your chained stitches as follows:
2a. With the bottom "bumps" of the chain facing you, put your hook through the top loop of the stitch closest to your hook.
2b. Grab the yarn with your hook and pull it through the stitch. This creates a new stitch on your hook. You should now have two stitches on the hook.
2c. Continue repeating steps 2a and 2b until you reach the end of the row.
3. To work back across your row, chain one in the last stitch on your hook. Then, loop the yarn around your crochet hook and pull it through the chain stitch, as well as the next stitch on your crochet (through two stitches total).
4. Loop the yarn around your crochet hook and pull it through the next two stitches on your hook. Repeat this until you reach the end of the row. You should have one new stitch remaining on your hook.
5. In order to work back across, put your crochet hook through the big loop that's facing you. Wrap your yarn around your hook and pull it through the big loop. You should now have two stitches on your crochet hook. Continue until you reach the end of the row, being sure to include the last big loop along the edge of your work.
6. Woo-hoo! You've just learned the basics of Tunisian Crochet! To continue adding rows simply repeat steps 3 through 5!

Angel, Prima, and Bella
Blisstastic yarn from our favorite Debbie!
Three new yarns from Debbie Bliss have finally arrived! Angel, Bella and Prima are all versatile fibers perfect for cool weather layering, loose summery garments, and lacy accessories...pretty much anything you can dream up! All three are fabulous - you can always count on Debbie Bliss for fantastic yarn - but I am particularly in love with Angel. This baby kid mohair and silk blend is a light, ethereal fiber much like Rowan's Kidsilk Haze. Whether you're using it solo for a sheer, heavenly sweater or double-stranded with a complementary yarn for a soft, unique texture, Angel comes with plenty of color options and 220 yards of finger-pleasing deliciousness!
Bella may not be as soft to the touch as Angel is but this DK-weight cotton and silk blend will only get softer with time and the more you wear your garment. The warm, rich colors carry just a hint of silky sheen making this yarn ideal for showing off stitch patterns, cables, and/or lacy details. Each 50 gram ball has 103 yards and knits up on a size US 5 needle. Use a ball or two for a delicate neckerchief or several for a summery tank!
Last but certainly not least, Prima is a sumptuous bamboo and extra-fine merino blend. This DK-weight yarn comes with 110 yards of exceptionally soft fiber that knits up on size US 6 needles at 5.5 stitches per inch. Boasting a wide range of solid colors, the subtle sheen of bamboo and shapely drape of merino makes this yarn excellent for flowing garments that show off your curves!
We made up kits of some of our favorite designs that show off how exceptional these latest yarns from Debbie Bliss truely are! Be sure to check them out!
We couldn't just gush about these yarns without offering a few up on Wool Watcher, now could we? Keep your eyes on Wool Watcher on February 18th to catch a great deal on Debbie Bliss' Angel and Prima at heavenly prices!

Closely Knit and Knitbot
Hannah Fettig has taken the shop by storm this week! We just received her new book, Closely Knit, as well as several of her Knitbot Patterns. We are absolutely thrilled to be carrying these exquisite and distinctive designs! Closely Knit is a fabulous collection of knitted gift ideas. Geared towards the procrastinator in all of us, this book is organized by how long each project takes which allows the last-minute planners to easily gauge what they can make in the given timeframe that they have. No more of those awkward birthdays or holidays when you're giving half-knitted scarves or gift IOUs! :) Not only is the layout of this crafty book helpful but the projects are extremely versatile and fun to work up! The Rustic Tweed Vest in Rowan's Felted Tweed and Noro's Silk Garden One-By-One Ribbed Scarf are great projects for those hard-to-knit-for guys in your life. Personally, I love the Birdie Felted Patchwork Bath Mat in Cascade 220 which will make for a thoughtful housewarming gift!
Thankfully, we are not restrained to Closely Knit to get our Hannah Fettig fix! Her pattern line, Knitbot, showcases Hannah's playful and stylish designs, as well! I know Kristen snapped up the Yoke Cardigan the very same day it arrived to us and I am personally partial to the Effortless Cardigan... it would look stunning in any color of Tosh DK! If you're hoping to knit a pullover or cardigan before the weather turns warm, Knitbot Patterns is a great place to start for some stellar knitspiration!

What's New?
We've got a few new yarns, patterns, and things to update you on... we hope you find the update helpful!
 Yarn Pop - Dandelion - Medium $20.00
|
New to us from Top Shelf Totes, Yarn Pop pouches are the answer to tangled works-in-projects and rouge balls of yarn that refuse to stay wound! Available in three different fabrics and sizes, there's a Yarn Pop for every project imaginable. An innovative twist on the typical project pouch, Yarn Pops are designed to hold projects that use up to 4-5 skeins. Here's how they work: a grommet (or two depending on the size) in one side of the pouch gives you easy access to your yarn without removing the skein from the pouch or risking a runaway ball - much like the Fiberspheres but made out of fabric. Once you are done working on a project, you simply unzip the top of the Yarn Pop pouch, place your project inside along with the yarn, and zip it back up! Everything is safe in one place and you don't have to worry about drawstrings coming undone, needles and notions falling out, or nosy pets undoing your handiwork!

Knitting Pure and Simple - 115 - Top Down Swing Pullover $5.50
|
I'm in love with the Swing Pullover from Knitting Pure and Simple! Classic and sophisticated, this loose fitting sweater is extra long and looks flattering on any figure. Knit in a worsted weight yarn, it's pictured here in Plymouth's Royal Llama Silk, a yarn that drapes beautifully and is extremely soft - making for a pullover that you'll never want to take off! Llama can be very warm so if you're looking for something a little more lightweight for the upcoming spring season (can you tell we're just a tad bit anxious for it?), consider Lorna's Laces' Shepherd Worsted or Spud and Chloe's Sweater!
|

Some of our favorites here at the shop include the demure Reversible Shawlette knit in Blue Sky Alpacas Alpaca Silk and the intricate Ring of Cables Shrug shown in the ultra soft Malabrigo Worsted Merino!
|
 Tussah Silk DK - 264 Dupion $9.00
|
New luxurious yarns from Sublime! Tussah Silk DK and Baby Silk and Bamboo DK are equally sumptuous fibers that you'll love working with. Tussah Silk is a unique twist of shiny viscose with the muted sheen of silk that will create a luminous fabric for those high fashion knits, lacy wraps, and trendy accessories. Using size US 6 needles, this DK-weight yarn works up at 5.5 stitches per inch and comes with 109 yards per 50g ball. Baby Silk and Bamboo shares similar specs (104 yards per ball being the only difference) and is also an ideal yarn for upscale knitters. Soft as an evening breeze, this lightweight fiber has it all: excellent stitch definition, gorgeous drape, and elegant, understated colors with whispers of silky shimmer.
A few balls of each of these new Sublime yarns will be going up on Wool Watcher on February 22nd! Be sure to stay tuned so you try these yarns for yourself at a sublimely affordable price!

Here's a tiny sampling of our handiwork this month...!! Click on any of the thumbnails to take a closer look or check out all of our projects!
Michelle's Cedar Leaf Shawlette | We absolutely love it when our customers share pictures of their finished projects! One of our online customers, Michelle, just sent Amber a batch of photos of all of the beautiful projects she's been knitting away at! Of course, Amber just loved Michelle's Cedar Leaf shawlette by Never Not Knitting...knit in the color Amber designed for last April's Lorna's Laces Limited Edition colorway. Shown in Shepherd Sport, Amber's 1st Kitchen! Michelle was kind enough to let us share with all of you this fantastic design! Thanks, Michelle! |
Leanne's Pretty in Misti Shrug | One of our delightful Beans, Leanne, who's been working for us over the Internet in Boise, Idaho has decided to move back to Reno! We've been so excited to have her back in person not only because her personality mainly consists of rainbows and cheerfulness beyond all possible belief but she also had a bunch of projects that she brought back to show and tell with us all! Her most stunning knit was this gorgeous shrug she made using our Misti Alpaca Landscape Collection and the free pattern on our site, Pretty in Misti. She chose Big Whiskey-cautioning that you might need two skeins instead of the one listed-and knit this up in no time! |
Leanne's Traveling Woman Shawl | As soon as Leanne saw Jeanne's Traveling Woman Shawl done in Plymouth's Mushishi, she had to have one for herself! Wanting to have the same size and look, Leanne stuck with the needle size Jeanne used but decided to use the Granite color, instead. Indeed the traveling woman, Leanne actually took this shawl with her on the plane flying back and forth from Boise to Reno to attend our annual Christmas party! Want to make your own? Download the Traveling Woman pattern found on Ravelry here: Traveling Woman Shawl and knit away! |
Allie's Orchid Thief Shawl | A few months ago, we had a knit-along for the Orchid Thief Shawl from Julie Turjoman's book Brave New Knits. Allison jumped on in and used Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light in color Terrarium. She went up one needle size in order to make it a bit bigger in size and, of course, it came out fantastic! Not only is this shawl soft because of the Tosh Merino Light but it's also intricate, exquisite, and everything in between! The design is by Ysolda Teague and she does have some corrections for this pattern that you can find here: Ysolda.com. |
Worsted Weight Boot Socks | Terry has been making these worsted-weight boot socks for her sweetheart who's been bugging her for more handmade socks ever since she made him his first pair for Christmas. Luckily, Terry loves knitting socks and says that using worsted weight yarn makes them go by in a blink of an eye! She used Knitting Pure & Simple's #998 Men's Heavy Weight Boot Sock Pattern and chose Cascade's 220 Superwash in #1945 Chocolate Tweed. Terry is knitting them top-down and two at a time so she can make them both at the same time! If you want to know more about the two at a time technique, Terry refers to Melissa Morgan Oakes' book 2-At-A-Time Socks. |
Stash Bustin' Flowers | Jeanne has been knitting up a storm lately but what else is new?, trying to use up stash yarn while creating gifts for friends and family. She found a pattern in Brave New Knits for knitted flowers used scrap yarn of Koigu's KPPPM and Rowan's Kidsilk Haze that were lying around in her stash, left over from finished projects. She stacked two of the flowers on top to create depth, sewed felted sweater bits for the backing, and topped them off with a cute button! Obtaining pin backs from a nearby craft store and hair clips from a local beauty supply store, she made all sorts of fun accessories for her friends and family to wear in their hair and pin to their clothes, bags, and anywhere else they could think of! She had tons of fun with this project while also using up scrap yarn that was just too good to throw away-perfect for stash bustin' and beginner lace projects! |
Sharon's Koigu Beret | Churchmouse patterns have been a sensation with not only our customers but with everyone on the staff! About everyone here has knit themselves the Annabella's Cowl and now everyone seems to be moving on to the Koigu Beaded Beret. Basically, once one gal knits up a pattern, everyone falls in love with it and has to have one for themselves!! The Beaded Beret is no exception! Once Sandy made up one for her daughter and did a show and tell, Sharon jumped on the wagon! Using only one skein of Koigu, Sharon knit this cute hat up in no time! She decided to not use any beads for a simple look....I love the sand dollar design in the back! Now, I'll need to knit this up...hmmm.... |
Nicole's 1st Anniversary Potato Chip Scarf | Another fantastic Potato Chip Scarf knit by Nicole-my, she's been on a roll lately! This scarf shows how handpainted variegated yarns can really make this scarf pop and show off all the colors in the skein! Nicole chose to use Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sport in the color she designed for January 2011's Lorna's Laces Limited Edition color. Her color was so popular that several of the weights in it sold out but you can see why-it's gorgeous! But really any of the Lorna's colors are going to look amazing in this scarf!! |
Sharon's Bone Yard Shawl | We weren't kidding when we said that we were all in love with Madelinetosh yarns! Sharon wanted a simple fast shawl to knit up and found a free pattern on Ravelry--boy, do we love Ravelry too! You can view and download the pattern here:Boneyard Shawl. A simple triangular shawl, you can knit it big to double it up on your neck as a shawlette or wear it as an oversized wrap on those particularly cold days! The original pattern calls for a DK weight yarn but since Sharon wanted hers a bit smaller and, of course, to knit with the ultra soft and squishy Tosh Merino Light...she used a fingering weight yarn and went down to a US 7 needle, instead of 8. This is such a versatile pattern that you'll want to experiment with different needle sizes and yarn gauges to make a shawl of every size and color! |
Stained Glass Afghan | One of Jeanne's regular customers, Sharan, has been stocking up on Lamb's Pride Worsted to make this amazing conglomeration of cabled celtic squares. She was kind enough to share pictures and links with us and, of course, let us share it with everyone! She's about finished with knitting all the squares and now she just has to sew them all together....we can't wait to see the finished project! You can view all of the pictures of the progress of the blanket-as well as cute pictures of her cat cuddling up with the squares- on her ravelry page: Stained Glass Afghan. Sharan obtained the patterns from a designer on Ravelry, Dorota, who posts not only intricate celtic motifs such as the ones seen on this blanket, but also gorgeous cabled ponchos, wraps, and scarves! You can view her work on her Ravelry page here: Devorgilla. Enjoy! |
