Jared Flood's Rock Island Shawl has left quite a few knitters awed by its sheer beauty and grandeur (and non-knitters everywhere are finally taking the plunge to learn), on the other hand it has also intimidated quite a few from casting on. I confess I was scared at first - the construction looks just too complicated. However, after seeing Sandy and Jeanne cast on and knit away to their hearts' content, I wanted a piece of the action too! Meanwhile, Jeanne saw the pattern instructions as a great opportunity to teach struggling knitters out there how to yarn over at the beginning of a row, as opposed to within a row, nestled safely within other stitches. As always, Jeanne takes the complication out of the stitch and really shows how easy it is! I only had to watch her video two times to master the technique! Once you have it down, you'll be breezing through all sorts of lace patterns! Please note: Make sure to read your pattern instructions. This is for a YO, K2tog pattern, but will easily work for a YO, Knit or whichever stitch you need to do after your YO at the beginning of a row!
1. Place your right hand needle through the first two stitches on your left hand needle, as if to knit two together (for a YO, K2tog).
2. Instead of knitting your stitches, simply wrap your yarn 'over' (up and around) by bringing it through the front and around your right hand needle. This is your 'yarn over.'
3. Once you have wrapped the yarn over, you will knit your two stitches as normal.
3. You should have two stitches on your right hand needle (the yarn over and the k2tog).
4. Follow the rest of your pattern as usual until you return to the YO, k2tog instructions and do it all over again!
Yep, it's that simple! Before you know it, you'll be looking forward to these rows. I know I am as I knit my Rock Island Shawl!

Rowan Renew Snowdrop Wrap Was $99.50 to $117.45 Now from $79.60 to $93.96 (up to 20% off!)
|
The perfect winter project to get you started on your cold weather knitting is now 20% off!
I know, I know...it's difficult for some of us to even think about winter knitting now that the weather has finally turned perfect. It's cool enough to play outside without fainting from heat exhaustion and it's still warm enough to go swimming and run around in tanks and lovely dresses. Even though I still love summer, I can't wait for winter knitting - wool, wool, and more wool! Which is why we made this cozy Snowdrop Wrap the kit of the month! Knit in a lattice style cable patterning, you'll be glad you have this when the temperature starts to drop!
This chunky wrap has another great feature - it's knit in 93% recycled yarn! Now, most of us might think of recycled yarn as being stratchy and, well, not the best yarn in the world to work with. Leave it to Rowan to put aside our doubts and come out with the incredibly soft Renew that is simply a joy to handle. Available in a rich color palette, this heavy worsted wieght yarn also has a strand of polymide spun with the wool. This gives the ball a bit of an extra 'twist'.
All in all, Rowan's Snowdrop Wrap will be a lovely garment to knit and wear when the weather turns cold. Especially now at 20% off!

First up is the fabulous Shawl for All Seasons Kit! Complete with a stunning shawl pattern, one large skein of Rhapsody Glitter Light, and 4 small skeins of the Beaded Silk and Sequins Light, this kit saves you the trouble of worrying if this shade of silver will work with that shade of sage, or if this yarn will drape just right for that pattern. Available in 3 select sets, the colors in each one are made for each other and designed to work magnificently with the included pattern! Try this perfect pre-packaged project for yourself, or give it as a gift for a fellow knitter or crocheter. Yes, you read that right. The pattern comes with both a knit and crochet version!
|
You may have noticed the departure of our beloved Beaded Silk & Sequins yarn. Though we were sorry to see that line go, we didn't have to mourn for long. Boasting the same 100% silk fibers with classy glass beads and sequins in gold or silver, the new Beaded Silk & Sequins Light is a DK rather than the original worsted - with more yardage! At 110 yards per skein, you can literally take this incredible yarn farther. Wrap yourself in a shawl out of this hand dyed, silky smooth yarn and you will instantly feel (and look) like royalty. Not interested in sequins? Try the Beaded Silk Light with the same great beads and silk minus the sequins and plus an extra 50 yards!
If you prefer the soft elegance of cashmere over the shimmering shine of silk, try the new Cashmere 1 Ply. This yarn is 100% cashmere and 100% gorgeous! Each colorway is a careful combination of subtle tones that blend beautifully for optimal color effect. Each super soft skein contains 510 yards and averages 8 stitches to the inch on a US size 2 needle. If you're looking for top of the line, quality cashmere, look no further!
For a yarn that offers both a silky sheen and a comfortable softness, there's nothing better than Rhapsody Light. With 50% silk and 50% Kid Mohair, this is a yarn you just wont want to put down! The silk is dazzling in each of the ten vibrant colors we currently carry amd the kid mohair provides a soft and subtle halo effect. At 400 yards per skein, this very light worsted weight yarn will work up fabulously on a US size 7 needle. For an added sparkle, try the Rhapsody Glitter Light! With the same fiber content and a few subtle threads of either silver or gold, you will have a splendid blend of color and shine that is nothing short of magical!
These yarns look lovely in skeins, but if you really want to see what they're capable of, check out our new Artyarns pattern support! The Ethereal Cashmere Cardigan pattern with the Cashmere 1-ply creates a lightweight cardigan that adds style to any outfit from a dress to a simple tank top. Or have a look at the Boleyn Shawl pattern that demonstrates just what the Rhapsody Light can do with only just one skein! We've also added new patterns for your old favorites like the Cable Cardigan, using Cashmere Glitter and the Top-Down Roadster Tunic, knit out of Ultrabulky!
Have fun trying out these "Light" versions of Artyarns--as delicious as the best chocolate cake and with none of the calories!
P.S. Read about Iris Schreier, the creator and owner of Artyarns on our latest blog entry here. Also, one lucky winner will be able to snag her own FREE Shawl for all Seasons kit! Check out the blog for more details to win!

Here's a tiny sampling of our handiwork this month!! Click on any of the thumbnails to take a closer look or check out all of our projects!
Tosh Chunky Hipster Hat | Kristen was so excited when the new Madelinetosh Tosh Chunky arrived that she grabbed a skein of the Filigree and cast on that very same night! She's knitting her very own design called the Hipster Hat, which you can find on her webpage! This particular hat has a few modifications, so stay tuned for the finished project! |
Jeanne's Umaro Blanket | Jeanne's daughter just got engaged so, of course, Jeanne wanted to knit a very special wedding present for the couple. Jared Flood's Umaro Blanket was just the ticket and Jeanne is knitting away. Instead of using a super bulky yarn as the pattern suggests, she chose Cascade's Eco Wool, which is slightly lighter. To accomodate the lighter weight yarn, she simply added four additional repeats and went down a few needle sizes to a US 10.75. Great job, Jeanne! |
Best of Nature Guernsey Wrap | Another beautiful Jared Flood pattern! Sharon was dying to knit with Misti Alpaca's latest treasure Best of Nature Worsted, a 100% baby alpaca yarn that's naturally dyed using plant fibers. This is, perhaps, the softest yarn we've ever laid hands on here in the shop and the colors are exquisite. Of course, once Jared Flood's patterns started to roll in, The Guernsey Wrap immediately caught her eye and, well, the rest is history. Sharon says the yarn is like butter and the pattern chart is really easy to follow - it's only composed of knit and purls! The pattern is the perfect project to try out for chart reading beginners and the Best of Nature yarn is the perfect fiber to treat yourself with! |
Seedling Slouchy Hat | I loved knitting up Never Not Knitting's Seedling pattern and love wearing it even more! I used only one skein of Madelinetosh's Tosh Vintage in the bright Malachite color way, which I loved knitting with - it's sturdy, doesn't split, and the colors are to dye for! :] The pattern contains a lot of purling, so for those who don't particularly care for that stitch, be warned! However, if you knit just a few rows a night, it'll be done in no time! I wear this hat almost every day...the seedling patterning is just so cute! |
Jeanne's Transition Gloves | As soon as the Shibui Sock arrived to our store, Jeanne had to knit with it immediately! She cast on right away and look how far she's already gotten in Shibui's Transition Gloves pattern! She's using US 1 and US 3 DPNs and chose to make the large size. I love the colors she chose! Jeanne says this is a great project for the knitter wanting to dip her hands into fair-isle - it's easy! |
Claudia's Baby Blanket | One of our online customers, Claudia from New York, sent us a picture of her latest project that she's knitting for her first grandchild! Congratulations! They do not know the gender yet so Claudia wanted a 'gender-neutral' color and her daughter chose Hullabaloo in Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted, which I think is just perfect! The pattern is one of Claudia's own - a conglomeration of a few different patterns, which you can find by clicking on the picture to the left! |
Kristen's Umaro Blanket | It seems practically the entire shop has been obsessed with Jared Flood patterns lately! Almost all of us have one of his patterns cast on at the moment and Kristen fell in the love with the Umaro blanket and knew it'd be the perfect gift for a wedding she attended for two friends of hers. She used Mirasol's Ushya which, unfortunately, we will not be carrying for too much longer. However, any Super Bulky yarn will work just fine. Try Plymouth's DeAire, Spud & Chloe's Outer, or Rowan's Big Wool! Kristen is enjoying the pattern and the blanket is already looking great - we think the couple is going to love it! |
Heartbeat Hat | Beep...Beep...Beep....Our hearts sure do beat for this darling hat that Sandy knit out of one skein of Misti Alpaca's luscious Tonos Worsted in color #11 Shaghai Wedding. She used some beads in her stash, but any nickel or glass beads with a semi-large hole will do the trick! This innovative pattern, designed by Christa Giles, is found on ravelry and it's called Heartbeat. The pattern also provides an option to use dulpicate stitch if you're not fond of beads! What's even better? If you buy a copy now, 100% of the proceeds will go to the Lustgarten Foundation, which raises awareness and promotes research for pancreatic cancer. |
Erika's 225 Degrees Shawl | Everyone around the shop has been in knitting shawl mode and it's been amazing to see how many beautiful knits the Beans are bringing in every day! Erika brought this beauty in just the other day and I love it!! She only used one skein of Madelinetosh's Tosh Merino Light, in the exclusive TML color way Home to make this exquisite shawl. The scalloped border is absolutely darling and definitely adds a nice detailed touch to the overall piece. The pattern is called 22.5 Degrees and it's designed by Martina Behm. Bonus - it's free! |
Amber's First Socks | Amber is a knitting queen and has just completed her first pair of socks! She jumped right in with Churchmouse's Turkish Bed Socks pattern and one skein of Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock and voila! They look great and she says they were a cinch to knit up and are very comfortable to wear! They look so cute tucked away in her 'Toms', too! Amber used one of the five limited edition colorways for July '11, Ambition - the 'Hogwarts House' color for Slytherin! |
