Springtime is finally here and I know that I'm one to become distracted by pretty flowers, warm weather, and careening butterflies dancing outside my window, so much so that knitting is almost put on the back burner-at least concerning my concentration. Warmer weather for me means missing subtle pattern changes, twisting yarn loops, and the even deadlier dropped stitch routine (*gasp*). For the longest time, a dropped stitch for me meant incredible amounts of frustration and, I'll admit, the occasional tear. Until, Jeanne, our knitting heroine of the day, came along to erase my frustrations with a delicate flick of her knitting needle wand. In this instructional video, she shows you all you need to know, step by step, on how to pick up those pesky dropped stitches. Before you know it, you'll be dropping your stitches on purpose just for the fun of picking them back up again.
1. Take a crochet hook and insert it into the stitch from front to back.
2. Grab the strand and pull it through, keep working up the rows and then put it on your needle.
3. For the next stitch , insert the crochet hook from front to back and grab the next strand higher up and pull it through and pop it on your needles.
Tips to remember:
When picking up a dropped purl stitch - the horizontal bar is in front and you work the crochet hook from back to front.
When picking up a dropped stockinette stitch - horizontal bar is in back and you work the crochet hook from front to back.

Cashmere Beret
Artyarns Cashmere Glitter Cashmere Beret Was $100.00 to $105.00 Now from $75.00 to $78.75 (up to 25% off!)
|
Okay, so if you've been reading our newsletters or our project logs, you've probably caught on to the fact we're just a tad bit obsessed with two things right now: Churchmouse patterns and all things European (Royal Wedding...Stephen West...the new line of Rowan yarns...). So, of course we wanted our kit of the month to be a combination of both of our recent shared loves while offering up a great knit to get your spring knitting buds awakening. Lo and behold, Artyarns' Cashmere Glitter arrived to our doorstep and we immediately had a winning combination: Churchmouse's Cashmere Beret!
This beret is the epitome of classic European fashion (one of Churchmouse's friends went to Europe wearing his and was actually mistaken for a local) while being lightweight enough to wear in any weather. Knit in the incredibly sumptuous Cashmere Glitter, this hat has just enough softness and glitz to be worn everywhere you go, from family BBQs to vacationing in Europe.
|
Now at 25% off, the compliments that you'll receive from this hat alone will make this knit worthwhile!
P.S. Jeanne just came back from a weekend fair-isle workshop with the friendly folks over at Churchmouse and shared with us a bit of what happened. Check it out on our blog here! I know...we've been pretty jealous, too! Although, she did bring back some of their tasty tea to soften the blow so I guess we can forgive her this time!

Exclusive Tosh Merino Light Color-Ways
Tosh Merino Light seems to be the darling child of Jimmy Beans Wool, gracing the stage with its enduring delicacy, exiting with its soft halo of rich color, and leaving the unsuspecting knitting audience stupefied. Suffice it to say, we were a bit beside ourselves when Madelinetosh sent us "mistake" skeins. Although, in their eyes, a "mistake skein" really only meant a Tosh Merino Light skein accidentally dyed in a variegated color-way, previously only meant for Tosh Sock. We were hooked and the skeins disappeared within the weekend to find a new home in our stashes..for safe keeping, of course. To indulge our newly found obsession, Madelinetosh obliged us by sending more and we now offer over 30 colorways, exclusive in Tosh Merino Light. It's too good to be true, we can hardly believe it. Not sure which colors? Almost all of the fun variegated colorways are the blends you can only get in the Tosh Merino Light base from JBW!

Misti Alpaca
We've brought even more handpainted yarns into the fabric of our family with new fibers from Misti Alpaca! Now presenting Best of Nature Chunky, Best of Nature Worsted and Tonos Carnaval!
First up is Misti Alpaca's brand new organic line, Best of Nature. Organic alpaca, natural plant dyes, and the signature detailed handiwork of hand dyer extraordinaires, both Best of Nature Chunky and Best of Nature Worsted are truely yarns to behold!
I know what you might be thinking...alpaca blends in springtime? It may sound counter-intuitive but somehow the incredibly soft feel of this yarn is what draws me to its summertime appeal. Soft as a cloud, delicate as a dew on a blade of grass, this yarn emerges from Misti's rich history of natural alpaca fibers to bring you a knitting masterpiece on your needles. I can almost picture it now as I wrap myself in a scrumptious afghan on the back porch of a woodsy cabin, listening to the songs of frogs at night and gazing up at the stars. Okay, maybe I'm just a hopeless romantic but I simply can't help but let my imagination run wild from the irresistible pull of alpaca.
|
 Tonos Carnaval $21.20
|
Of course, Misti loves the feel of fingering weight yarns on your lap in the summertime just as much as the next knitter and, to celebrate, offers up a festive blend of superfine alpaca, merino wool, silk, and just enough nylon for stretch with Tonos Carnaval! With subtle tone on tone variations and an oh-so-soft to the touch feel, you'll be able to bring the party wherever you go, whether its in the office or a Saturday night celebration. Your toes will be relishing in this scrumptious yarn. With 436 yards a skein, there's more than enough to make a pair of socks or a medium sized shawl!

Cottonspring and Cashmere Glitter
We still can't get enough of hand painted yarns so we brought on some great new summer fun from Artyarns!
With much wondrous drape and softness, Cotton Spring is happiness in the making. This delicious cotton yarn is spun with a strand of wool to make a twizzly fiber that will create the most lovely lightweight shawls, whimsical children's cardigans, and snuggly crib blankets. Arriving in fantastic colorways from lovely pastels to rich muted tones, Cotton Spring will have you wishing it's springtime all year long! I especially love this simple baby blanket knit out of Cotton Spring, perfect for those spring babies out there. Plus, you should have enough leftover to make a matching bib, durable enough for those mishaps in the kitchen. I want to make this suitably light top down tee as a birthday present to myself..after all, I'm a spring baby too! Not only is this yarn great for the summertime but it's the perfect option for those who can't wear or work with wool!
For many of us, what comes to mind with metallic glitzy fibers is a rigid, cold finish. Not so with Artyarns' Cashmere Glitter. I mean..it's cashmere, how can you possibly go wrong? The delicately thin metallic strand woven into the cashmere provides the just the right amount of oomph to make that cashmere shine and sparkle under the right light, without being too overwhelming. Gor for a fun variegated skein or dive into a more subtle tone on tone variation - any choice will be sure to add that extra spring in your step. Try it out with the kit of the month, or grab some skeins for a pair of glitzy socks or a bliss inducing shawl.

Here's a tiny sampling of our handiwork this month...!! Click on any of the thumbnails to take a closer look or check out all of our projects!
Sandy's Kerchief Shawl | Wowza! Sandy is at it again with this breathtaking shawl knit out of Zauberball Crazy and two colors of Elsebeth Lavold's Silky Wool for the fair isle row. She bought Kieran Foley's Kerchief pattern and started almost immediately...look how far she's come already! I love, love, love this shawl and its going to look absolutely amazing once its done!! More pics to come! |
Barb's Jitterbug Ruffle Scarf | Sandy's friend Barbara knit this cute little scarf up in Colinette's fun sock yarn, Jitterbug, using only one skein! Using Churchmouse's Barb's Koigu Ruffle Pattern [perhaps the name alone is why she chose this pattern!] and some US 4 and US 6 circs, Barbara had this done in no time and Sandy, the good knitting friend she is, blocked it for her! Here she is modeling this whimsical scarf for us! |
Victoria's B-day Hat | A little while ago, Victoria's husband held a surprise birthday party for her and we were all invited! Sandy whipped up this gorgeous hat for Miss Vicky [as she likes to call her] in Berroco's gorgeous self-striping Ultra Alpaca Tonal. She used the pattern, Constance [little did we know at the time that Victoria's grandmother's name was Constance], found in Louisa Harding's Knitting in the Details and some matching beads to make the tiny hearts that align the columns. Victoria loved it and she looks absolutely gorgeous wearing it! |
Botanic Hat | Shevawn finally finished up the Botanic Hat for her sweetheart late last night so here are the final photos! The Botanic Hat by Stephen West was a really fun project to knit up with a skein each of two different colors of the Malabrigo Rios [machine washable! warm! soft! She loves this yarn!!!!]. Fairly simple to knit with-alternating two colors and slip stitches throughout-this hat was a cinch. |
Ines' Bellini Cardigan | One of our international customers, all the way from Germany, has sent us a ton of pictures of all the beautiful garments she's been knitting up using Lorna's Laces yarns. This is one is knit in Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted in the Sherbet colorway. She tweaked a design found in Jane Ellison's book Pure Noro and actually changed the pattern rows provided with the daisy stitch pattern we used on our free pattern Scarves to Throws Month 5. I know...we're impressed, too! |
Erika's Mara Shawl | Another gorgeous Mara Shawl-a free pattern on Madelinetosh's website-knit by one of our super-fast shippers, Erika! She chose to use Malabrigo's luscious Worsted Merino in colorway Nostalgia and it's coming out spectacular! This is going to be a very warm gift for a family member of hers who lives in a particularly cold climate. Great work, Erika! |
Sharon's Springtime Bandit | Sharon whipped up this gorgeous shawl in zero time flat! I really don't know where she finds the time...I think she's knitting in her sleep! She found the pattern for free on ravelry, Springtime Bandit, and chose to use Berroco's recycled fiber Remix in color Bittersweet. She can't stop raving about how great this yarn is to work with from its versatile wear from winter to summer to its incredible drape and softness! Of course, the shawl is stunning and we're all starting to look for projects to use the Remix... |
Bunny Hop | As soon as the latest Knitting at Knoon's Bunny Hop pattern arrived to our shop, Jeanne couldn't resist how adorable these bunnies are and cast on almost immediately! She's now been parading this little guy around the shop and unsuspecting customers have all been seduced by his irresistible cuteness! Just in time for Easter, this will make for a wonderful adornment for Jeanne's house! She knit the sweater out of Green Line DK which won't be around for too much longer...Shepherd Sport will be a good substitute when the DK runs out. The sweater pattern is from an online doll pattern...any of the ones found here should work just fine: Doll's Clothes. Just keep trying it on your bunny until it fits! To make the tail, she used Rowan's British Sheep Breeds DK in Ecru. |
Floret Blanket | Sharon finally dipped into her Berroco's Comfort Knitting and Crochet: Afghan book and picked out the Floret afghan. She substituted the Comfort for Madelinetosh's Tosh Vintage and will need about twelve skeins. She's planning to have this blanket done in about a year since it's not so much money if she buys one skein each month. The first square is done, knit in the color Ophelia, and wow! I can't wait to see the finished afghan. Sharon's going to pull out her quilting skills for the backing, as well! |
Amber's Happily Ever After Mitts | Amber just finished one of these super cute fingerless mittens done up in Cascade 220 Superwash Sport. She used a free pattern on Spud & Chloe's website, The Happily Ever After Mitts which originally called for Spud and Chloe's Fine. I absolutely love the colors she picked out! I want to make myself a pair before it starts turning warm again--which might not be for awhile anyway! :] |
