Making your own gifts instead of participating in the frenzied shopping of the holiday season is often preferable since homemade gifts are both fun to make and fun to give -everyone appreciates something made just for them! The creators of such thoughtful presents often run into two major problems: time and money. Whether you're a procrastinator, have a ton of people on your gift list and/or are hoping to keep costs down this year, we have a couple of handy tips and project ideas that will hopefully help you hold onto some of your sanity this holiday season!
|
Size often reflects the amount of time a project will take, so it is good to stay with small things such as gloves, scarves and hats. Bulky yarn and big needles also makes things go faster! Last year I just bought a bunch of chunky sale yarn and made scarves for my whole family in a matter of days just using a pair of US 13 needles and k2 p2 ribbing. It is an easy project to modify so each scarf looks unique just by changing color, width, length and adding things like fringe or beads.
|
The Churchmouse Welted Fingerless Gloves are another of my favorite easy to knit and easy to modify patterns. These unisex hand warmers only take 100 yards of DK weight yarn such as Mirasol Samp'a, though I've found you can also use worsted as well -like Malabrigo Rios! If you have a ton of leftovers in your stash, consider making mismatch pairs for your kookier friends and family.

The Magnolia Scarf Kit
Magnolia Scarf Kit
Was $45.00 Now $36.00 Save 20%!!
|
This November's Kit of the Month is the luxurious Magnolia Scarf from Classic Elite! The scarf pattern is free on Classic Elite's website, which means all you need is a pair of US 6 needles and 5 balls of the exquisitely soft Magnolia! A blend of merino wool and silk, Magnolia is a DK weight yarn that drapes beautifully making it perfect for dressy, feminine projects!
The Magnolia Scarf is wide and long, but since it is knit in a lightweight DK, it keeps your neck toasty warm without being over bulky :) Design elements of this fantastic scarf combine simple ribbing with elegantly patterned ends and scalloped edging. This scarf looks great on everyone, so whether you're knitting for yourself or a friend the Magnolia Scarf Kit is a great choice -even more so at 20% off!

Interweave Knits Holiday Gifts 2010
Interweave Knits has really outdone themselves this winter with their Holiday Gifts issue. Over 60 fantastic projects for every level of knitting, every style preference and every age group! There are adorable hand puppets, multicolor mittens, handsome hats, lacy shawls and capes... the list goes on! While all of the patterns in Holiday Gifts are tempting to knit, we do have a few favorites we couldn't help but make into kits. The delicate Wheeling Scallop Scarf is at the top of my list -it only takes 1 hank of Manos Del Uruguay Lace Multi! Another excellent holiday project is the Bookman Blanket, perfect for curling up with your favorite holiday novel. Knit in the soft, machine washable 136 Merino Superwash from Mission Falls, Bookman can be knit as a throw or full blanket. Of course there are plenty of winter weather accessories, as well. Be sure to check out the Bohus-Inspired Hat and Parallax Hat!

New Lorna's Laces Color Commentary: Purple Mustang
Behind every color in the Color Commentary series there is a story, and Lorna's Purple Mustang, the latest edition to this color collection, is no exception.
New Color Commentary: Purple Mustang
Available in Sock, Sport, Worsted, and More.
Inspired by the founder of Lorna's Laces!!
|
Sunshine has been Lorna's '65 convertible Mustang for 9 years now, but she's only been purple for about a year. Why purple? Well, once upon a time Lorna had a crisis of color while packing for a trip and decided to downsize her wardrobe from the full color specturm (except orange) to purple and black with a little bit of denim and white. After a couple of years purple had grown to be Lorna's trademark color, and it seemed fitting that Sunshine should join her purple club!

The Knitter's Guide To Hand-Dyed And Variegated Yarn
And speaking of the founder of Lorna's Laces... If you only buy one more book in 2010, make it Lorna Miser's newest book, The Knitter's Guide To Hand-Dyed And Variegated Yarn. A great gift for hand dyed yarn enthusiasts and/or an essential addition to your own fiber arts library, this book is brimming with useful tips, tricks and information... not to mention several must-knit patterns! If you're thinking "Lorna, like, THE Lorna?" you are correct! Lorna Miser is the founder of Lorna's Laces and a prolific knitwear designer who is an expert in not only the art of hand painting yarn, but knitting with it as well! Each chapter focuses on different aspects of knitting with hand dyed yarn as well as an entire chapter describing and identifying the many types of variegated and hand dyed yarns out there. Many chapters also include stitch dictionaries and patterns that reflect the concepts covered in the chapter so you can practice and apply your newly acquired skills!
We've picked some of our favorites for kits like the Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted Desert Camouflage Vest, which is so versatile that you can easily knit it in the men's sizes listed or just resize a little to fit yourself. This pattern originally called for Green Line Worsted but we just loved the thought of more color options that we opted for the Shepherd Worsted. However, if you want a cheaper route, by all means-just buy the same amount of skeins listed in the kit in the Green Line Worsted! Another kit worth mentioning is the Regal Silk Green Tea Wristlets which might possibly be the softest gift you could ever make for someone! Note: For some of these kits, we substituted yarns that we don't carry for yarns that we thought would be equally as fitting for the project. We hope you agree!

 Tosh Merino Light $16.50
|
You may have noticed that we've gone a little Madelinetosh crazy lately... and the madness continues! We just received a shipment with over 140 colors of Tosh Merino Light! This delightful sock weight single ply yarn comes with a healthy 440 yards per 100 gram hank and the colorways are out of this world. Soft sultry hues, bright neons, rich shades and earthy tones fill out the wide ranging palette by the hand painting gurus at Madelinetosh.
If your infatuation with the Tosh yarns is half as intense as ours, you're probably racking your brain for a project to justify purchasing some Merino Light for your stash ;) May I suggest one of our new Tosh Patterns, the Hay Cardigan? This timeless classic takes between 3 and 4 skeins of either Tosh Sock or Tosh Merino Light. This cardigan features a simple style, scoop neck and understated trim detail that looks great on just about everyone!

|
 Trendsetter Othello $13.00
|
One of our newest yarns from Trendsetter is Othello. This alpaca wool blend has a funky boucle texture but remains incredibly soft and light with just a touch of cotton and acrylic in the mix! A chic and bulky yarn, Othello knits up quickly on size US 10 needles and makes for a uniquely stylish scarf or cowl! Be sure to flip through Trendsetter's Othello Pattern Booklet. We've also put together some fabulous kits of our favorites from this booklet like the Boxed Front Tab Jacket and Cropped Jacket.
Othello will be making an appearance on Wool Watcher soon so be sure to keep an eye out and grab a couple skeins at an unbeatable price!
|
 Girl's Ballet Cardigan $5.50
|
Knitting Pure and Simple has a great new cover-up for all those young, aspiring ballerinas out there: the Girl's Ballet Cardigan! Whether they prefer modern dance, tap or classical ballet, every little girl will love this trendy, one button cardigan wrap that will make them feel like a pro (and super cute too!). This pattern calls for a worsted weight yarn and suggests Muench Family or Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted. For those purple-loving princesses out there, consider using Lorna's Purple Mustang for a cardigan she'll never want to take off!
|
 Dolce Handknits - Victoria $5.50
|
Three fabulous new patterns are here from the always stylish Dolce Handknits!
My personal favorite is Victoria, a long casual cardigan with an empire waist and two roomy pockets (I am always in need of pockets). Summer may be gone but it will be back before you know it and when it is you'll want Mystic, a summery tank that can be knit in Debbie Bliss's Eco Baby
or any other lightweight cotton DK.
However, if you are in winter knitting mode, consider Prudence, a comfy pullover! The pattern suggests Nashua Handknits Natural Focus Ecologie Wool but would knit up beautifully in Rowan Purelife Renew or Pastaza Paints from Cascade.

Introducing...Fall Wrapped Up

Fall Wrapped Up
by Debbie Swartzel
Uses 6 hanks of the Landscape Collection
|
Fall Wrapped Up takes 6 skeins of the delectably soft, bulky Hand Paint Chunky yarn from Misti Alpaca, an excellent fiber for cold weather knits. As she states in her pattern description, this luxurious wrap is "like wrapping up in your favorite blanket on a cool day, but so stylish you don't have to leave it on the sofa when you leave the house"! Fashion blankets you can wear anywhere? I've got to knit me one of those :) Any of the 12 hand painted Landscape Collection colorways (dyed exclusively for Jimmy Beans) compliments the original cable and stitch patterning of Fall Wrapped Up. A stunning winter accessory, this wrap not only wards of the chill but captures the aura of timeless beauty as well.

Here's a sampling of our handiwork this month... !!
Eye of Partridge | Our favorite sock knitter Mary can't be held back! She grabbed 2 hanks of the November Lorna's Laces Limited Edition Caramel Pumpkin Latte in the Shepherd Sport and this is what she came up with! Using US 2 and 2.5 needles she cast on 52 sts worked a 2X2 rib for the cuff with stockinette for the leg. Then, using the Eye of Partridge heel flap carried that through the bottom of the foot for a sturdier sock. She used a basic sock pattern and you can see this sock and her other designs on Ravelry, just use the people search and type in "Hobbit"! |
Welted Fingerless Gloves | Leanne needed some warm hands as she typed up her wonderful product descriptions for us, so she chose the Churchmouse Welted Fingerless Gloves pattern! She also had to use the new Malabrigo Rios (so soft and machine washable!) and even though the pattern calls for a DK weight she said that the Rios worked up perfectly!! Now all the gals at the shop have jumped on the band wagon are working on their own mitts now...what fun! |
All Day Beret | Beret's are all the rage this season and this one will be sure to turn heads! Made from the new Stitch Nation Bamboo Ewe, the pattern itself is free, so what's not to love?? You can find the pattern on their website and I can tell you the yarn is super yummy! |
The Orchid Thief Shawlette | Lace shawls are making a real come back and boy you can't stop Sandy when she has knitting on her mind! Since her friend Julie Turjoman's book, Brave New Knits, came out she has been knitting away! Brave New Knits features patterns from all over the blogosphere and it is so just much fun! This particular pattern is by the fabulous Ysolda Teague! Please be aware that there are some corrections, but it is worth the effort. You can find the corrections on Ysolda's website. |
Beatnik sweater | Jeanne is in love with the Beatnik from Knitty.com and has decided to cast on for a long term knit! Of course it's not like she doesn't have anything to work on, but if she doesn't get going it will never get done. The beautiful cables and wonderful boat neck are right up her alley, so here she goes! She will be making it in size 40 and is getting two extra balls of yarn just in case. She should have it done by spring and just in time for the camping season! The Berroco Remix yarn is so amazing to work with and you can find the pattern here on Knitty.com. |
Alpaca Hug Cowl | Amber is a knitter! She worked up the Alpaca Hug Cowl in our lovely Landscape Collection yarn and even modified the pattern, clever girl! She used 20 stitches less and only one hank of yarn, as this is a gift for her Mom who is cute and tiny, so shhhhhh! She followed the pattern exactly and said it was pretty easy for her. All that's left is to block it and wrap it up! Good work Amber! You can find the pattern here on the Free Patterns Page of our site! |
November Beret | The stylish November Beret is amazingly easy and Jeanne worked hers up in no time. The lovely cables create a fantastic effect and will have people asking where you got it. Jeanne's is worked up in the medium size and she used one of her favorite yarns: Debbie Bliss Luxury Tweed. If you like what you see, you can get the pattern here. |
