Give the gift of knitting this year! Whether you're expanding your own knitting skills or helping to create the next generation of knitters, this video is a great teaching tool! In just over four minutes, our very own "knitting guru", Jeanne, reviews the simple steps of English-style knitting! As one of the more common knitting techniques, English-style knitting is characterized by carrying the yarn in your right hand and then "throwing" or wrapping the yarn around your needle to create a stitch. If you are using this video to aid in teaching a new knitter, you will probably be reviewing how to cast on. You can find a video on knitting English style (plus a whole lot more!) on our website... just in case you need an extra visual!
1. Once you have cast on, hold the needle with the cast on stitches in your LEFT hand and the empty needle and yarn in your RIGHT hand.
2. Put the tip of your right needle through the first stitch on your left needle entering from front to back.
3. Tension your yarn with your right hand. This can be done a variety of ways and depends on what feels most comfortable to you. As you can see Jeanne likes to loop hers around her fingers. I prefer just weaving the yarn between my fingers.
4. Making sure your yarn is behind your needles, bring it up, around and over your right needle.
5. Next bring your right needle through the stitch on your left needle maintaing needle-on-needle contact. This helps keep the new stitch on your right needle.
6. Finally slip the stitch you have just knit into off of your left needle. Congratulations! You just knit English Style!
7. Repeat steps 4-7 until run out of stitches on your left needle. You may have to "re-tension" your yarn several times while knitting one row, but not every stitch. This method may seem awkward at first, but once you've got it down projects will be flying off your needles!

(Rowan, Noro, Nashua, Araucuania, Regia, and more!)
Wool Watcher
If any of you are in the same predicament that many of us Beans are in-scrambling around at the last minute to find and make Christmas gifts-we may have the perfect solution you need for a stress-free weekend! Take a seat and relax in front of the fire-with your laptop at your side- because we are putting on a fantastic Wool Watcher holiday weekend extravanganza (yes-we are really that excited)!!! And, how can we not be when we we offering up some of our all-time favorite yarns at amazing prices?
Starting on Friday, we'll be purging the shop of some pretty amazing yarns - all at 40-60% off (or more!).
Below is just a Tiny-Tim taste of what we are going to be offering this weekend. We're sure you'll be able to find something for everyone on your list-whether you are looking for a few balls of luxury yarn for your favorite knitter, some chunky yarn to knit up a super-quick last minute gift, or enough yarn to make that project you've been dying to knit after the holidays are over and done with.
As always, the quantities aren't very huge, so you'll want to keep your computer on the Wool Watcher page all weekend long in order to catch the yarn you've had your eye on all year long but just haven't tried yet! Not to worry...just cuddle up in your favorite hand-knit socks and blanket, throw on a few of your favorite holiday movies, and wool watch the day away! We think it's a much more relaxing and enjoyable option than dealing with the long lines, crazy winter weather, and general holiday madness that usually occurs around this time of year! :)

Rowan Books for the Rowan Enthusiasts
Need some inspiration for all of the great yarn that will be up for grabs this weekend? There are a bunch of new books that have just arrived in our shop, featuring your favorite knitwear designers and Rowan yarns! My favorite has to be Touching Elegance by Kim Hargreaves! Featuring rustic, simple coloring with a defined emphasis on texture, these 21 gorgeous designs make for a unique collection of bohemian chic. Kim Hargreaves has been such a busy gal (lucky us!) that she's also released a second book, Cherished. Brimming with rural-inspired knits and catering to those of us who love cozy, comfortable, yet stylish sweaters (who doesn't?), it's no wonder this book has been flying out the door!
If accessorizing is your thing, Nordic Knits is right up your alley! Written by Rowan wizard, Martin Storey, this book contains 25 accessories to wear and to display around the home! Designed using Rowan's natural wool and cotton yarns, Nordic Knits is full of timeless knits for heads, toes, couches, and more! For those who like to knit on the cutting edge of fashion, Fresh Fashion Knits is the book for you! A compilation of the most popular designs that have been featured throughout Rowan's Studio Collection, from elegant tops and flirty skirts to stunning sweaters and vintage capelets, this booklet has it all! Even better, it includes useful tips and techniques for creating and modifying your own polished and professional garments.

 Flamenco $17.00

Trendsetter is known for their unique and funky yarns and the brand new Flamenco definitely fits the bill! By knitting along the top edge of this flouncy ribbon yarn, the net-like Flamenco opens up to about 3 inches which creates beautiful, cloud-like ruffles. If you're a fan of the oh-so-popular Cha-Cha yarn, you'll absolutely adore Flamenco! Looking for fun and trendy patterns using this delightful new yarn? Check out the Flamenco Pattern Booklet as you may just find your next must-knit project!

 Interweave - '10 Winter $6.99
|
Full of knitting articles and fabulous patterns, the Winter 2010 Issue of Interweave Knits has page after page of knitspiration! I've already fallen in love with the casually classic Isobel Skirt knit with Manos Silk Blend...a perfect project to knit up for myself once all of this Christmas madness is over! Of course, there are also some great hats, scarves, and gloves in addition to several spectacular pullovers and cardigans for staying warm and in style during these chilly months! One of my favorite sweaters in this issue has to be the unique Prism Pullover that is knit using Bamboo Ewe, an all-natural yarn from Stitch Nation. If you need a project that only takes a few evenings to complete (last minute Christmas gift?!), try the Kinetic Cowl. This chic neck-warmer only takes one hank of the soft, self-striping Opus 1 from Zitron and is finished in a flash on size US 9 needles!
|
 Autumn Vines Beret $5.50
|
A new pattern has arrived from Never Not Knitting! The Autumn Vines Beret is a timeless design featuring an intricate stitch pattern that creates a unique relief of leafy, intertwining vines. Not only is this pattern a treat for your fingers to knit, it is a fashionable accessory and makes a beautiful gift! Knit with around 200 yards of any DK weight yarn, Autumn Leaves looks spectacular whether you use a hand-dyed fiber like Madelinetosh's Pashmina or solid colorways such as Fresco from Classic Elite.
|
 Mirasol Ushya $14.95
|
Mirasol's Ushya is my kind of yarn! Splendiferously soft and super bulky, Ushya knits up in no time on size US 15 needles. The finger-pleasing merino and nylon blend is perfect for a wide range of projects. Use one 100g skein (114 yards) for a chunky hat, scarf or cowl -the ideal choice for quick gifts! Ushya comes in a friendly palette of classic solids that will compliment any winter outfit! If you're searching for the perfect project using Ushya, be sure to take a peek at the Ushya Pattern Book from Mirasol! With plenty of cozy warm knits and fashionably functional designs, it will be hard to pick just one! Two of our favorites, here at the store, are the Bella Cardigan and the Jacob Pullover. I can just imagine curling up with my knitting during a winter storm wearing either one of these snuggly sweaters!

 Knit Kimono Too $26.95
|
Best-selling author, Vicki Square, pays special tribute to the ancient Japanese aesthetic of Kimono design and colorwork in her latest book, Knit Kimono Too. Traditionally, kimonos are designed to act as a reflection of nature, which is achieved by layering specific patterns and colors found in the natural world. Square does a fantastic job of retaining these Japanese design principles to the foundation of her pieces, while adding her own modern twist, creating truely unique and fascinating pieces! This book features over 20 patterns of not only kimonos but lightweight tops, tanks, tunics and more! The book also includes an instructional DVD featuring Vicki Square demonstrating everything from surface embroidery to two-stranded colorwork. Whether you're hoping to pick up a few tips or take your knitting to the next level, Knit Kimono Too is an excellent resource!
