With the holidays just around the corner, we figured that now might be a good time to share some inspirational words about knitting and the family.
After all, whether you're visiting friends or family is visiting you, you never know when the opportunity to knit together (or to teach someone to knit) will present itself.
And when better than the holiday season to share the hobby together? For me, knitting has always evoked images of sitting by the fire with friends and family, sipping cocoa (with some Baileys, of course!), and clicking the needles rhythmically.
As we all certainly understand, it can be difficult to find enough time to spend with your family these days.
But that doesn't always mean that we can't find time to do the things that we love together...
Just take one of our favorite customers Rhonda and her teenage daughter, Kayla, as an example.
When Rhonda received knitting lessons at our shop for Christmas a few years, Kayla begged to take the class with her.
Kayla picked up knitting quickly (having taught herself to knit a few weeks prior to the class - cheater!!).
For Rhonda the class was an opportunity to enjoy time with her daughter "to sit and relax with Kayla and just knit, rather than go, go, go."
Although the classes have since ended, Rhonda and Kayla continue to knit in the evening working on quick projects - scarves and beanies.
Sometimes their interests take them in different directions - Rhonda is learning to knit socks while Kayla does beadwork.
But while it might seem a simple matter for one family member to teach another to knit, sometimes good intentions wind up with snarled yarn and frayed tempers. "Beginning knitters tend to forget which way to wrap the yarn around the needle or which side to put the needle through until they've created a habit out of how they hold the yarn." notes another great knitter of ours, Audrey. She admits that teaching others to knit can be challenging (images of the teenage cousins that required a lot of supervision still dance in her head).
When her mother accompanied Audrey to yarn stores, she became inspired by the varied colors and the texture of the yarn. She started buying yarn for Audrey to make her scarves and sweaters and eventually asked Audrey to teach her. Audrey was unsure how her mother would take to knitting, but her mother picked up the knit one purl one scarf pattern easily, Audrey only had to show her once.
Audrey advises veteran knitters to have patience and a sense of humor when teaching a loved one to knit. "Give yourselves plenty of time, start with an easy project and make a fun afternoon/evening of it." She and her mother started off their knitting lesson with homemade marshmallows and hot chocolate.
Children's books are an excellent source of simple projects that knit up quickly. Scarf or hat kits like
2 KnitWits Very Easy Sideways Beanie are also good beginner projects.
Whether it is taking a class together or spending a quiet afternoon at home, knitting can bring different generations together for craft and companionship. "It truly is a blessing to me, and I love how it lets me reflect on things, let my mind wander, talk with my family... and at the same time marvel at the beautiful colors of the fiber." Rhonda says of her knitting. And those are exactly the sorts of blessings that we all need this holiday season!!
So, like Audrey and Rhonda, we hope that you'll end up with an opportunity this holiday season to share your love of knitting (or crochet)
with someone you care about... your relationship might just end up being stronger and even better because of it!

As seen in December's Martha Stewart Living...
Snobuddy Kit
Make the Family for $35!
|
That's right! We made the big time! Ok, it's really just a paid advertisement in the back of the magazine, but the staff at Martha Stewart
did have to let us in. :) So what's all the hubub? Well, we've taken one of our most popular patterns EVER and created a kit for it...
the Snobuddy Family pattern calls for 9 different colors of gorgeous Berroco Peruvia - and we've done the work of measuring and winding up
all of the colors for you! Plus, now you don't need to buy an entire hank of orange just to knit a few noses.
For $35, you get enough yarn to make the entire family, the pattern, and a handy clear zippered bag for storing your project as you go.
Plus, if you use the code offered to Martha readers (on this page: https://www.JimmyBeansWool.com/martha),
you'll get Free Shipping. Place your order today and you might be able to get these knit up in time for the holidays...
How cute would these be, resting on the fireplace mantel? Or what if you attached ornament hooks and hung them on your tree?
Or set them out in a row on your dining room table... the possibilities are endless! (In our house, I can only picture Huck or Wiley playing with them and then chewing on their little noses.)

St-Denis
The Premiere issue of St-Denis Magazine sold
out soooo quickly, we just knew that we had to carry the yarn!! Available in a broad palette of 18 different colors,
the St-Denis is a traditional, firm dk weight wool with a soft finish - and is priced just right ($7.50 for 150 yards).
My favorite part about this yarn is that I know it's perfect for the patterns in the book...(some of my favs are below)!
Never Not Knitting
When Sandy recently returned from a knitting vacation in Southern California (yes, I'm jealous!), she was
awash(?) with excitement about a "new" pattern line that she had discovered... she begged and pleaded for us to carry these
new designs (ok, she didn't have to beg too hard - it was love at first sight) and we quickly agreed. Although primarily designs
for little girls, i'm finding myself more and more attracted to the lone sock pattern.

A Hodgepodge of Sale Items!
This month, you'll find a huge variety of sale items...there are great yarn deals that we've gotten from our
suppliers, big discounts on yarns that we're getting rid of (to make room for other yarn, of course),
and a second annual 25% off luxury needle sale. If you're like the rest of us and have
been trying to stretch your yarn dollar, then our Sale Outlet is the place for you!
And don't forget, we still have a decent selection of the
Misti Alpaca Lace
(30% Off) and
Lorna's Laces Swirl Dk and Swirl Chunky (50% Off) left. Grab some before it's gone!
Here's a sampling of the hodepodge from the last 30 days...
Take 25% off Select Lantern Moon Needles
For the 2nd year in a row, we're celebrating the end of a terrific year with a 25% Off Lantern Moon Needle sale (select styles).
Ebony, Blondewood, and Rosewood Sox Stix, Destiny Circulars (Ebony and Rosewood), and the classic Ebony and Rosewood Straights
are all on sale... The sale will last until December 15th or until we sell out (and we don't have a ton in stock),
so you might need to give your honey a gentle nudge if some of these are on your wishlist...
(or you'll have to give yourself a nudge if they are on your friend's wishlist!)
Personally, I'm a big fan of the Ebony Sox Stix - I typically knit the leg of socks of long circulars and then switch to
the double points for the heels. I know it's cumbersome, but it works for me :)
Save 25-40% on Select Debbie Bliss Yarns
Save big on some of Debbie Bliss' most popular yarns and colors! The Pure Silk DK is exactly what you'd imagine: 100% pure,
luxurious, soft, silky silk. Perfect alone or mixed with a complementary kid mohair.
Need something machine washable for a special baby (or man!) in the family? Try the Rialto 4Ply or the Cashmerino Chunky
Or maybe it's the cashmere that's appealing, but you're happy to handwash the finished product... that's where the bulky Como comes in.
One of our most popular winter yarns this season, we've got some great overstocked colors (like Ecru!) of the Como on sale for 25% off.
This sale will only last as long as our inventory does, so if you see something that you like, make sure to pick it up now!
Save 30-40% on discontinued colors of Cascade
When Cascade discontinues colors of their best yarns, everyone wins! Save 30-40% on select colors of the yarns shown below.
I mean, $3.12 for a ball of their popular peruvian cotton? That's almost giving it away!!
(Note: we'll be putting up pictures of the Pima Tencel soon.)
Save 25-40% on ALL Southwest Trading Company Yarn
We're phasing our inventory of Southwest Trading Company yarns and have them ALL ON SALE!

Here's a sampling of our handiwork this month... !!
Cara Caridgan
|
This great hooded cardigan only takes 11-13 hanks of the Lorna's Laces DK Swirl (50% OFF - only $6.50 a hank!).
It can also be done as a vest which only requires 8-10 hanks, or 1200-1500 yards to complete.
It is sized at a 38-44 bust and the lace pattern is challenging enough to keep your interest, but easy enough for your first lace project.

Berroco Sundae Legwarmers
|
Victoria is working on these fabulous Berroco Sundae legwarmers. Knit straight and then buttoned up with your choice of funky buttons and worn in a slouchy manner you will turn heads as you walk by. The cable pattern is straight forward and the pattern information will be on the website soon!
|
Swirl Shawl and Sweater
|
This lovely sweater set is elegant and will make you feel and look like the bell of the ball! The sweater uses 7-11 hanks (1050 yards - 1650 yards) of Lorna's Laces DK Swirl and the shawl requires 7 hanks (1050 yards) to complete.
|
Victoria's Stocking Cap
|
Victoria is working on her holiday gifts and this Ann Norling stocking cap pattern was so much fun that she may just keep this great hat for herself.
Ann's patterns are great for just about any yarn, as she helps you choose the yarn to use by the gauge
and you adjust the patterns by putting in the numbers for your cast on and your decreases, etc.
This warm, fun hat will be someone's holiday gift and you can knit one just as cute too!
|
Zebra Project
|
Sandy is knitting this adorable Zebra from Knitting at Knoon's Safari Friends pattern for her grandson, Matteo. She is using US 6 needles and the Debbie Bliss Stella yarn for this one, isn't it cute?
|
Huck's Meringo Hat
|
I started knitting this hat on the plane to Germany (i visited Lana Grossa headquarters!) and haven't had a chance yet to finish it. I better hurry! I'm using 3 different colors of the Lana Grossa Meringo and making up the stripe pattern as I go.... the colors match his favorite fall and winter jacket - and the yarn is crazy soft - so i think he's going to get a lot of use out of it once it's done.
|
Sad, single sock
|
Will I ever find time to knit again? I think not... Sadly, this one little sock and the 1/2 hat above are the only 2 projects I've managed
to work on in months (5.5 months, to be exact). And I only made progress on those because i spend 32 hours in or around an airplane last month.
Sigh. Oh well. The hat is a 1 year size and the socks are for a 2 year old, so maybe i'll be able to finish them up before the kid is too big.
Sure. :)
