October Tasty Tosh Colorway: Sugar Skulls!
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Sugar Skulls

October is here and so is one of our favorite fall holidays: Dia de los Muertos! While this annual celebration to honor deceased loved ones coincides with Halloween and All Saints Day, it's steeped in its own special traditions, including the making of colorful and festive Sugar Skulls - so, we thought we'd make some of our own! This month's Tasty Tosh 2015 installment, Sugar Skulls, is a vibrant mix of teal, yellow, pink, and rusty purple to represent the lively hues used to decorate the hand-crafted skulls given as special gifts and remembrances during Day of the Dead celebrations. They're not exactly edible, but this color will still make your mouth water! Get it in Pashmina, Tosh DK, Tosh Merino Light, Tosh Sock, and Tosh Vintage!
Sugar Skulls
If you'd like to adorn your own skull with these bright, celebratory colors, knit up Kristen's Winter Wheat hat! It's just $1 for the next month, and uses one hank of Tosh Vintage - and the pattern comes free with purchase of one hank in the Sugar Skulls colorway! To make some decorative sugar skulls of your own, check out this helpful tutorial that Emma used to make the amazing sugar skulls in our photos! Aren't they fantastic?!
As a special bonus, the gals at Black Rock Mud have created a yummy Mini-Mudpot recipe for a delicious Pumpkin Hand Treatment! The one-of-a-kind balancing and moisturizing benefits of mineral-rich Nevada Illite clay from the Black Rock Desert will bust up that dry winter skin and keep you hands soft and smooth!

      New Cascade Yarns for Fall
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Cascade Fall Yarns
It's a cascade of Cascade! One of our favorite yarn-makers is wooling us up for winter with some amazing new yarns and gorgeous patterns to match!
Knockma
We nearly twittered with delight when we saw the Knockma Hood - it's absolutely enchanting! Inspired by a vision of fairy-inhabited forests, this hooded cowl is just magical in new Cascade Salar, a super-bulky blend full of warm wool and soft alpaca! Pull it on and escape into your very own fairy tale!
Light Feather
Once you've rejoined us in the real world, grab a skein of El Cielo and get to work on a new wardrobe staple: the Light as a Feather Shawl! Simple eyelets and a classic shape make this a perfect go-to shawl no matter your outfit or destination, and the yummy, lofty alpaca in the yarn makes sure you'll stay comfortable no matter the weather! And can you believe it takes just one skein? Heavenly!
Stormy Weather
Weather looking ominous? You'll be prepared with the Stormy Weather Cowl knit up with just one ball of gorgeous Cascade Nevado! The unique construction of this bulky yarn - super-soft llama and wool fibers blown into a nylon tube - makes it lofty, squishy, and capable of keeping out any sort of chill! The fun stitch pattern of the cowl looks like a storm of its own - and you'll be right in the eye of it!
Frankie Hat
Chunky knits are still all the rage as we head into cold weather, and who doesn't need a great slouchy hat? The Frankie Hat will be your new favorite: cables and lace play nice in aran-weight, 100% wool Boliviana yarn to create a warm and stylish topper you'll grab every time you go out the door! Make one in every color: there are 30 beautiful hues to choose from!
Evening Shawl
Looking for balance in your life? New Cascade Roslyn strikes it perfectly: springy wool with the perfect amount of gorgeous silk to add drape, not to mention lovely, tweedy flecks for visual texture! We love it in the Evening Shawl; just 2 balls are enough to make a wonderful shoulder-warmer with subtle lace details for those special evenings out - or in!

New Projects to Knit & Crochet
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Fall is our favorite time of the year for both reading and crafting...so what's better than a slew of new knitting and crochet books?!? Pick up a couple of these gems and see if you can stop looking at them long enough to make something!
Bumble Bee
We've never met a Tin Can Knits pattern we didn't like, and now there's a brand new bundle of joy to celebrate: Max and Bodhi's Wardrobe! Alexa Ludeman and Emily Wessel teamed up to clothe their adorable babies (and all of ours, as well!) with a beautiful and timeless collection of baby knits that work for any gender or color palette! We especially love the Bumble Hat in Unraveled Designs and Yarn Swirl DK and the Fly Away Blanket in Tosh DK, but one thing's for sure: you'll want everything in your baby's wardrobe to look just like Max & Bodhi's!
Elizabeth Doherty, a nearby resident and long-time customer, has created a gorgeous new book with a creative and clever approach to sweater construction! Top Down: Reimagining Set-In Sleeve Design tackles sweater challenges with ease and introduces a new, specially-developed method of creating the perfect sleeve. And the patterns are breathtaking: the San Serif Cardigan and the Meris Cardigan are a couple of our favorites, but you'll have to choose your own - it won't be easy!
Serif Meris
Hitchcock
Pom Pom Quarterly is the go-to source for knits that are perfectly on-trend and show a true appreciation of the craft! We're knitting the Hitchcock Pullover for everyone we love; it's understated, unisex, and absolutely elegant - and irresistible in the soft texture of Swans Island All American Worsted! Or, start smaller (but even more charming!) and knit the Karusellen Hat, like our Sandy did for Jenny, in tribute to Jenny's Swedish roots! The saturated colors of Fibre Company Cumbria will look amazing in it!
Crocheters, we didn't forget about you: check out the 2015 Special Issue of CrochetScene! Not only is it full of over 30 brand-new crochet projects to try, it has tips for making beautiful garments with shaping and detailing. Just look at the Petal Top in silky Shibui Staccato: a gorgeous lace bodice and feminine shaping make this simple top a jaw-dropper! And there's nothing school-girlish about the Swish-Swish Skirt; done up in springy HiKoo CoBaSi, you'll be suppressing the urge to swish-swish your way all around town in this darling piece!

Classic Elite Fall Yarns are Here!
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Classic Elite did their homework this season: they knew we knitters are looking for both great patterns, and yarns that pair perfectly with them! Pick up one of their three new collections and revel in the absolute aptness of these gorgeous pieces!
Big Liberty Wool
They've upsized their classic, washable Liberty Wool Print to create Big Liberty Wool, a bulky-weight beauty that will be the workhorse of your stash for sweaters and warm accessories! The Emerald Isle Book has more than a few ideas to get you started, all inspired by the beauty of Ireland: the Skibbereen Sweater can be made up as a pullover or cardigan; the Kilkee Pullover features simple lines and a cable detail; and the Clifden Cowl has a double cable for maximum coziness!
New Telluride is all about texture: a unique blend of alpaca and linen, this all-purpose sport weight is soft and tweedy at the same time! The colors look amazing in the patterns from the Inspired by Patchwork book; we love the double-knitted Shoo Fly Cowl, the subtle color changes in the Nonsuch Pullover, and the colorful versatility of the Lucky Clover Wrap!
Telluride
Song
Cotton, Wool, and gorgeous color are a match made in heaven in new Classic Elite Song: this smooth, DK-weight blend in soft, muted colors looks just melodious in anything! The Unforgettable Cardigan is just that - you'll be thinking about the lovely lace detailing, even when you're not wearing it! The Let's Dance Cardigan is just as lyrical, with an all-over textured lace stitch that's sure to garner plenty of compliments...and invitations to dance! Check out all the patterns from the Sing Book and make your own melody!

Self-Patterning and Striping Sock Yarns to Crave
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Self-Patterning Sock Yarn
Colder weather doesn't always mean heavier yarn: a healthy dose of colorful, self-striping sock yarn can help you beat the winter blues, sometimes with just one skein!

Cascade Heritage Prints is the perfect yarn to get you started, with its vivid and cheerful color combos! The Popp'in Prints Socks will have you smiling every time you look at them! Lane Cervinia Forever Sock boasts a palette of bright colors as well as more muted hues, so you can suit any mood; try it for a pair of special Crocheted Socks! And have you seen Regia Pairfect? Each ball includes a special "starter thread" of bright yellow at the beginning of where each sock should start, so you know your stripes, dashes, and dots will be exactly the same on both feet! Try a pair of Simple Socks to really show off this yarn.
We're not through yet; check out the Regia Design Line by colorwork masters Arne & Carlos! The patterning mimics traditional colorwork motifs used in many of their Norwegian-inspired designs, and looks fabulous in a pair of Socks with Cable Detail. Or, how about a pair of pretty and practical Rose City Rollers in Spud & Chloe Stripey Fine? Of course, you don't have to knit socks with sock yarn; the Happy Magic Scarf in Universal Pix proves that - beautifully!

Tosh Short Skeins: Vintage and Prairie!

We've got a secret: we're a few yards short of a skein...but we love it! You can be short-skeined, too: just grab some Madelinetosh Vintage or Prairie Short Skeins and knit up something amazing! The yarn is all first-quality, richly-colored, high-quality merino wool, but the Vintage Short Skeins are just 3 yards short (yep, that's all!) and the Prairie Short Skeins are 100 yards short of a normal hank. Leanne used 3 colors of Vintage Short Skeins to knit up a new version of Kristen's Uno, Dos, Tres Cowl, and it's gorgeous! Rachel's Aurelia Shawl uses 2 Prairie Short Skeins to create a beautiful gradient effect, and Heather's Blueshift Loop is a quick-knitting, one-hank project with an easy lace option - use 2 colors of Prairie Short Skeins for an even more colorful result!
Crystal Palace Sale Yarns - 50% off!

We just got a new shipment of delicious sale yarns from Crystal Palace! The Mochis are where it's at this fall: long color changes with a gradient effect, in soft, single-ply wool! Mochi Plus makes quick accessories, and Mini Mochi looks great in shawls! Merino 5 is our favorite for warm sweaters, hats, and scarves: it's squishy, soft, and machine-washable! With our love of everything sparkly, you know we love Moonshine - this great mohair blend has the sparkles spun right in! And select colors of sale Sausalito will look amazing in your next long-striping color-change shawl or cowl!

Knit Collage Wildflower and Pixie Dust Mini - 60% off!

We love Knit Collage for their super-fun, hand-spun yarns, and right now, we've got some gorgeous ones at great deals! Wildflower is spun from strands of beautiful cotton voile fabric from Jaipur, India, that's been printed by hand in an age-old tradition - use it for a super-chunky, fashion-forward cowl or an absolutely unique Pembroke Shawl! And Pixie Dust Mini is just as interesting: a single-ply, roving-style bulky yarn with cocoon-like slubs for extra texture and a sprinkling of sparkles, just like magical pixie dust! It would look awesome in a colorful Mini Bandana!

We've got Mara Mania at the shop: the Beans just can't get enough of the Madelinetosh Mara Shawl! And it's no wonder: squishy garter stitch, a fluttery edge, and the gorgeous tonal colors of hand-dyed yarn - what's not to love?!?

Mara Shawls

Many of us chose Madelinetosh yarns for our creations; this simple pattern is perfect for showing off the beauty of those glazed colors! Jenny and Jeanne chose Tosh DK for their shawls (and can you tell they're both green lovers?); the plied wool is firm enough to give structure to the shawl while still being soft to the touch. Emily went with lofty, single-ply Tosh Merino DK and used an extra skein to make her shawl extra-large; it's like a squishy, beautiful blanket! Kristen is a lover of the single-ply, too, but chose a lighter weight: she used Tosh Merino Light and her shawl is light, lush, and lovely!
More Maras
Leanne decided she needed a touch of luxury in her Mara, so she used a pretty purple color of Anzula Cricket with a touch of cashmere for ultimate softness! And Bethany went all out with delicious alpaca Rowan Lima and fluffy Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted to create an eye-catching striped shawl that captures her bright and bubbly personality!
As you can see, there are many options, but one thing's for sure: this pattern is so forgiving and versatile, you can use almost any yarn and make endless modifications to make it your own! How will you make your Mara? Or, if you've already made one, show us on our Mara Shawl Ravelry Thread!
