I started knitting this hat on the plane to Germany (i visited Lana Grossa headquarters!) and haven't had a chance yet to finish it. I better hurry! I'm using 3 different colors of the Lana Grossa Meringo and making up the stripe pattern as I go.... the colors match his favorite fall and winter jacket - and the yarn is crazy soft - so i think he's going to get a lot of use out of it once it's done.

Will I ever find time to knit again? I think not... Sadly, this one little sock and the 1/2 hat above are the only 2 projects I've managed to work on in months (5.5 months, to be exact). And I only made progress on those because i spend 32 hours in or around an airplane last month. Sigh. Oh well. The hat is a 1 year size and the socks are for a 2 year old, so maybe i'll be able to finish them up before the kid is too big. Sure. :)

This Knitting Pure & Simple pattern is absolutely PERFECT for the Swirl Chunky... At 120 yards per ball, you'll barely need 3-4 hanks to knit up to a 48" chest. And talk about knitting something quickly! If you were thinking of knitting a sweater for a friend this holiday season, the price and simplicity of this garment makes it a perfect contender. :)

As shown, this fun blanket uses 8 different colors of a worsted weight yarn (i'd go with the Shepherd Worsted), but you could definitely get creative with the pattern and use fewer colors or even a different weight of yarn. How about 8 different shades of the Swirl DK? At 150 yards per hank (and only $6.50), you'll want about 8-10 hanks total for the larger size and 3-4 hanks for the baby blanket size. Since the DK is lighter than the Worsted the pattern calls for, the finished size will end up being smaller, so i'd make 1 size larger...

Ok, this book makes me wish sooo hard that Huck's grandmother knew how to knit! I think i mentioned that Chris from Knitting at Knoon knit one of her Safari Friends for him (a blue elephant) and he absolutely adores it - he plays with it all of the time. The pattern for this soft and velvety scarf is on the inside of every label of Lana Grossa Gnocchi. This scarf took 4 balls on a 10 1/2 needle, knitting one stitch on the string between each ball. Using the knitted cast on method, cast on about 10 Stitches. It's a good sized scarf so it doesn't need to be bigger, and you could always make a smaller one, but.... Why??? lol!

Terry just couldn't resist the gorgeous Autumn shades in the Mini Mochi Autumn Rainbow colorway! She's using 2 balls of it right now, but she might make the scarf a bit longer and use an additional ball. Speaking of Mini Mochi, have any of you out there knit with it? Um, this book looks great (and i love the idea that you don't have to perform arithmetic), but i have absolutely no idea what the word Insouciant means... not to mention whether or not that's the kind of sock knitter I am. If it means "she who loves to knit socks but can't mentally manage anything more complicated than stockinette stitch - and rarely finishes 2 matching socks in less than a year", then i guess that does describe me! No matter what the definition, Cat's new book Personal Footprints for Insouciant Sock Knitters is a winner and has lots of creative ideas for knitting up your Trick or Treat Shepherd Sock and Shepherd Sport.

This classic ensemble reminds me of the Mary Tyler Moore days (or maybe "That Girl" w/ Marlo Thomas?). In my mind, there is no other way to describe this hat other than "Smart." It's just smart - and a bit sophisticated too. 1 hank of the Trick or Treat Shepherd Worsted will get you the smallest sized hat and neckwarmer, while 2 hanks of the Worsted or the Lion and Lamb will give you enough yarn to knit all of the other sizes.

1 hank of the Shepherd Worsted in Trick or Treat is plenty for this FUN head-hugging hat from 2 Knit Wits. It that gives the illusion of being layered, but is really knit in just 1 piece.

Speaking of illusions, this Turban is a unique way to keep warm in style! Adorned with a button at the gathering of wide ribs, this hat is knit on size 8 needles and uses the equivalent of 1 hank of Shepherd Worsted or 1 hank of Lion and Lamb.

Ok, well... i had no idea what 'insouciant' meant, but at least i did know how to pronounce it. The title of this book has me absolutely tongue tied! No worries... the beauty of this book is that i can use all of my leftover Trick or Treat and knit all of these little creatures to my heart's content... and still never have to know how to pronounce the title. It's a win-win! Love the idea of knitting all of these little toys, but terrified of the skill level required? Never fear, my dear! Step by step photography teaches all the techniques you'll need to make these little guys, even if you've never ventured beyond a scarf before.

I know, I know. It kinda looks like Navy. But it's not. I promise. It's deeper, darker, and well... more secretive (ha!). Seriously, Cookie's Deep Dark Secret is a bit more variegated than the Navy - and is definitely a much richer shade of blue. So blue, it's almost black in spots. You can really see how it knits up in this photo of Cookie A's finished Clandestine socks (the pattern is free on knitty.com and you'll need 2 hanks of the Shepherd Sock).
