Shawls are the scarves of the past. Often knitted using Lace Weight yarns, most shawls marry intricate designs with somewhat simple yarns. If you're a beginner knitter, look for a pattern where a complex yarn has been knitted using a straightforward pattern - the result is just as stunning.
The book Victorian Lace Today, by Jane Sowerby, contains a written and pictorial history of lace shawls through the Victorian period and includes numerous patterns for gorgeous creations, many based on antique patterns she used in her research. This is a spectacular book for any shawl lover (and those who might not think of themselves as shawl lovers - I included myself in that category until I took a look at this book!).
Although you can use just about any yarn to create a shawl, we've tried to show you the most popular ones used for shawls. Enjoy! |
