      Summertime Lace Knitting
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Debbie Bliss Rialto Lace Frill Edge Stole Lacework is often considered the pinnacle skill of knitting and crochet, due to its overall complexity and inability to replicate the pattern in a woven fabric. Lace is a relatively new technique with humble beginnings, as it has only been in existence for a little over 200 years! Lace knitting was mostly developed in more rural and poor areas of countries to be used as a commercial enterprise. Some of the most well-known lace histories come from the Shetland region of Scotland (the same region that the 'walking knitters' were from, featured in our last newsletter), Russia, Estonia, and Iceland...to name just a few. Of course, each region boasts its own distinct style and construction.
One of the more famous examples of fine lace knitting is the Wedding Ring Shawl of Shetland. The shawls are so fine that they can be drawn through a wedding ring! Simply amazing! Euny Jung, editor of Interweave Knits magazine, gives a great description of some of the types of lace constructions in an archived blog post: Majoring in Lace-Introduction. Interweave's Spin-Off Magazine, Knitting Traditions is a great resource to check out, as well!

Lace in modern times has become wildly popular for a variety of knits. More recently, shawls and shawlettes have become one of the most popular items to knit, while delicate lace motifs are also showing up in socks, sweaters, scarves, cowls...just about everything and anything! Lace is great for lighter weight summer items like tank tops, tees, and cardigans, as well.
We're all pretty big fans of lace knitting and constantly have something new and lacy on the needles. Rachel, in our purchasing department, is one of our token lace knitters. One of her greatest lace accomplishments, the beaded Aeolian shawl she knit for her wedding last year, made both Sandy and Jeanne (the lace veterans of the shop) gasp with delight! Rachel's Aeolian Shawl
You can read details about the entire project and see more pictures on our project log here!

Rachel's advice for a new lace knitter? "Lifelines are your best friend! Using a needle that has a little hole in the join like the Knitter's Pride Interchangeable Needles or the new Addi Lace Click Long Tips allows you to attach a piece of dental floss or waste yarn to the needle which easily pulls the lifeline through as you knit your row. Repeat this as frequently as you need to (usually every ten rows or so) and you'll never have to worry about ripping your entire project out again!"
Speaking of lace knitting extraordinaires, one of the latest additions to our pattern collection is Designs By Romi. The woman behind these unique designs, Rosemary Hill, recently moved to the Northern Nevada area where she's quickly become a regular in our shop. We love her designs so much that we now carry a handful of her lovely lace shawl patterns. We just adore Celaeno's delicate lace edge and beadwork, Buttonwillow's gorgeous border, Asterope's bold design, and Taygete's tonal colors and picot edging. Each design is simply divine!

Psst! We have a fun collaboration with Romi in the works starting this summer. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for more info coming soon!

If suitable yarns for lace projects are what you're after, we have some great options to choose from! For summer-weight tops and garments with the amazing drape of Linen, try Fibra Natura's Flax yarn, complete with free patterns like the Natalie Tank and Jocelyn Shawl! For an even lighter-weight option, the brand new Shibui Linen has fantastic drape and sheen for a variety of projects. Kristen, our in-house designer, is currently working with this yarn for a top-secret project, as of yet to be released. However, we can say this much - she loves knitting with this Shibui gem of a fiber!

For a more traditional laceweight yarn, Wolf Creek Wools' Luscious is a lovely silk & alpaca option, available in a soft summery color palette. Check out Gina's Polaris Shawl to get an idea of what you can knit with this wonderful yarn. Lastly, Debbie Bliss' Rialto Lace is an incredible merino wool machine-washable yarn that's, of course, easy to care for. Gina, the crank-em-out knitter, knit this stunning Indian Feathers Shawl using only one ball of the Rialto Lace! Be sure to also check out some of our Rialto Lace kits, such as the Lace Leaf Shawl, Scoop Neck Top, and the Tie Front Cardigan!

We met the super nice gals from Chicken Boots at Stitches this year and were immediately taken in by their darling collection of knitting needle cases and notions bags! Not only that, but they are hand-sewn using popular fabrics by designers like Valori Wells and Tula Pink - many of which we sell here at the shop! We love how easy that makes it to sew matching project bags to go with these cute little cases! Check out Kristen's recent blog post on how to sew a quick-and-easy project bag for knitting - you can make three bags with just one yard of fabric!Chicken Boots Mini Knitter Case Accessories - Butterflies

Bar-Maids was another one of our Stitches West finds this year. Not only do they sport a super catchy name, but their products are to die for! The various scents that their bar lotions come in are so delicious that both Jimmy and Kristen had to take home some yummy smelling products to test out. Kristen's favorite is the Nag Champa for its distinct but not too over-the-top smell and Jimmy is a fan of the Vanilla Moon's soft and warm scent. We have a whole bunch of little samples to share so we are doing a little giveaway with this newsletter! The first 40 customers to place an order for any Bar Maids product including: Lo Lo Body Bars, Lo Lo To Go, Lo Lo Cuticle Intensive, Lo Lo Lips, or O' For Feet's Sake AND put the code "NEWSLETTER" in their order notes at check out will receive a free sample with their order!       JBW Has Been Bit By the Sewing Bug!
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

It's true! We've been bit by the sewing bug big time here at Jimmy Beans Wool and it's obvious that some of our customers have, too! The fabric orders keep coming in and we're so thankful to those of you who are helping support the newest branch of our business. Although knitting and crocheting is still our main passion, many of our beans are branching out into sewing! We love all of the beautiful quilts we see, especially the ones in Denyse Schmidt's gorgeous new book, Modern Quilts, Traditional Inspiration! We love it so much that we're giving a copy away on our blog Wednesday, June 20th. With all of this inspiration that surrounds us, it's no wonder that all of our synapses are firing on high as we crank out project after project!

That's why we were particularly thrilled when the line of patterns from Serendipity Studio arrived! For those of us wanting to experiment with making some of our own clothing, these patterns were the last push we needed! We were immediately taken in by the adorable bohemian skirts in the Fashion Formula Skirts Booklet, the comfy looking Diane Kimono Dress, and the fantastic retro Sally Shirtdress. Not to mention the Artful Bags and Accessories Booklet is full of cute patterns for useful bags and other items! One of the great aspects of these patterns is that most of them include multiple ways to customize the garment to get it just the way you like it. Perhaps when paired with some of our fun vintage inspired fabrics as we have outlined below (keep reading!), these garments will be equally as fun to sew as they would be to wear!

What's Old is New: Vintage-Style Fabric
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

One of Amy Butler's most popular collections, Gypsy Caravan, is back by popular demand! Now, an entire new generation of sewers and quilters can fall in love with her vintage inspired designs. It didn't take too long for Casey to fall in love with this collection so, of course, she made her very first skirt out of Wild Flowers in the stainless color. Also available in precuts, Gypsy Caravan is the perfect vintage collection for you to start your fabric stash! Use the fat-quarters for a hexagonal quilt or patchwork placemats from Rashida Coleman-Hale's I Love Patchwork book. Or how about using the design roll for a colorful strip quilt from Joel Dewberry's Sewn Spaces - this was the first project for many of our beans!
With a retro color palette and 70's style paisley prints, it's no surprise that we just can't get enough of Denyse's Chicopee (which is on its way!) and Flee Market Fancy collections. On account of summer rolling its way in, skirts are the perfect beginning sewing project! Rachel showcased Denyse's Legacy Bouquet on her very first Vintage Inspired Skirt - absolutely adorable! The big print lends itself well to skirt patterns or bags: Amy Butler's Barcelona Skirt is a great place to start!

      Projects On our Needles
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Our knitting needles have been as busy as ever these past few weeks! Take a look at our latest projects!
Monika's Herbivore Shawl
Monika's Herbivore Shawl
Monika did a fantastic job choosing the perfect yarn to knit Stephen West's Herbivore Shawl. The stripes of the shawl really show off the self-striping nature of Noro's latest yarn, Shiraito. Monika loves how soft the yarn is and the shawl feels really nice when wearing next to her skin. She also liked that it was a bit more consistent in its thickness, which makes for a smoother fabric. She chose US size 2 needles instead of the US size 6 needles recommended because she's quite the loose knitter. Great job, Monika!
Lianna's Easy Cowl in Any Gauge
Lianna's Easy Cowl in Any Gauge
The Madelinetosh Tosh Vintage in Amber Trinket is what inspired Lianna to knit this cowl in the first place! She bought her skein all the way back in December but - being a brand new knitter - she wanted to get better before using what she deemed 'her precious Tosh'. She had a bit of a rough start, but that's what learning is, right? Eventually, Ann Norling's Easy Cowl in Any Gauge Pattern got easier and was true to its name. Jeanne's advice really helped, which was marking every 20 stitches. That way, she knew if she was going a bit off course!
Terry's Owlie Sleep Sack & Hat
Terry's Owlie Sleep Sack & Hat
Terry knit this for Bethany's newborn baby, Penelope, before she was even born. Now, that's thinking ahead! The Owlie Sleep Sack & Hat by Teresa Cole was so cute and adorable that she had to knit them up pronto. I bet it didn't hurt that the pattern is free, too! She loved working with Malabrigo's Merino Worsted in Golden Ochre for the project. Try Malabrigo's Rios for a machine-washable version!
Cherie's Laika Cardigan
Cherie's Laika Cardigan
I don't really know how Cherie does it. Not only does she teach American Sign Language courses and work our retail shop, but she churns out sweaters faster than anyone I know (well...maybe besides Marilyn). Once she saw the Laika Cardigan in Ysolda Teague's Little Red In The City, she thought it would be fun to make, especially with Stitch Red going on. Just a few weeks later, she was already finished! A few weeks after that, she had version 2 already done as well! For this version, she used Ysolda Red in Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock - we think the bright color really does justice to her already bright and bubbly personality!
Rachel's Diantha Shawl
Rachel's Diantha Shawl
Here's yet another of Rachel's fantastic lace projects! She swears by the yarn she used, Artyarns Cashmere 1 Ply Yarn, stating it's "absoutely a dream to work with, and the yarn worked up into the softest shawl ever!" The hand-dyed purple color that she chose has some tonal variation, which gives the shawl another layer of interest. The Diantha pattern by Susanna IC was a lot of fun, and she included both the beads and the nupps. The short row shaping in the body of the shawl gives it a lovely crescent shape that sits beautifully across your shoulders!
