I have made dozens of these for my grandson and as gifts. The look is old-fashioned, the gift always ooohhhed and ahhhhed over. I make a variation, instead of feet I use the rib bottom on the legs of the overalls. No guessing feet size or length. The pattern is well explained and I made these as a real beginner first, have honed my skills but still make these. Use a washable wool and make the parents really happy!
I think this is a very cute finished garment. There are two options, one for baby pants with an elastic waist and other for high-waisted baby overalls with feet. My main complaint with the pattern is that it does not include the information you need to actually knit the overalls with feet. If you are knitting this as a gift, you will need to ask a parent to measure the baby to make sure it will fit, (and knit like crazy to get it to them while it still does fit) or do internet research to determine what size to make the feet. In addition, the straps on the overall version have buttons that you are supposed to place "as desired" which means you have to figure it out for yourself. I personally buy patterns when I do not want to figure it out myself--I just want to knit and have a finished item I can use or give to someone I care about--not another project that I have to do extensive research to complete or worse, something that I take hours to knit only to find that it does not fit the intended recipient, or that it requires the recipient to ask me to fix it so it can be used (I won't even consider the scenario of the ill-fitting garment sitting unused in a drawer and never being placed on the baby because it does not fit). If I had known that I would have to figure out the sizing myself, I would not have bought the pattern.
Just finished the hooded version. Runs a bit small and added length because it looked short to me. However, the pattern was easy and the results were good.
Knitting Pure and Simple patterns are concise and so easy to understand.
And the service from Jimmy Beans is the best, as always.
I have knitted one of these for a gift and my great niece loved it. She likes to wear it all the time.
Knitting Pure and Simple patterns are the best. One buttonhole makes it go even quicker.
Of course, the fantastic service from Jimmy Beans makes shopping here a pleasure.
My grandson feels so grown up when he wears a vest like his dad and he wanted me to make something for him, so I had looked for a good looking pattern........this is it!
This sweet little poncho knit up like a dream. I added a few flowers along the bottom front and my granddaughter calls it her snuggle blanket. We can't convince her it's a jacket.
This is a great pattern to have archived for obligatory baby gifts. The perfect little 'hoodie' can be knitted quickly in the much appreciated toddler size. This pattern is also very easy to customize with intarsia animals or knitted cables, etc. I appreciated the unisex versatility of this pattern, very much.
