This pattern was originally written with Rowan Polar yarn which is now discontinued; however there are many substitutes: Rowan Cashsoft DK: 2 balls (short version); for long version: Rowan Kidsilk Haze (doubled), 4 balls; Blue Sky Alpaca-Organic Cotton (long version): 4 balls; Debbie Bliss - Alpaca Silk: 6 balls; Nashua Creative Focus - 4 balls.
This pattern's so nice, I made it twice: once with cascade pima tencel doubled on 17s, once w/a fingering weight on 11s. Love them, love the pattern! Fun changes in lace patterns at the ends, the main middle section is easy to remember after a bit.
I really enjoyed knitting this pattern. It was super easy and fast. The cabled neckline was what sold me on it and it is beautiful and different from any other ponchos I've seen. Instead of using the super bulky wool I used 4 strand of fisherman's wool which gave me the same gauge, and I made mine longer to my hips. With this change in the weather it is really something great to snuggle in to!
I made this for my daughter with Big Wool Fusion (now out of production), and it turned out so well, I'm making one for my other daughter. It looks so cute, and it was fun searching out a vintage pin to go with it.
I just made this for my 7 yr old daughter using Rowan Big Wool. LOVED the pattern!! Very clearly written and easy to follow with beautiful results. I made the M/L size which was slightly large for my daughter's head but you can tighten the ribbon a little for better fit so she can wear it for a longer time. It just took me a couple of hours and I am not a fast knitter. Highly recommend this line of patterns, I am going to knit Fantine for myself next.
