Terry has been using this hat pattern to teach her beginning circular knitting students... It's a great way to practice decreasing, yarn-overs, and knitting in the round. We hope you enjoy it as much as Terry's students have!

Materials
  • Dk (200 yds), worsted (200 yds) or bulky weight yarn. We used 2 hanks of Lorna's Laces Swirl DK for our sample.
  • 16" circular and double pointed: DK use #6, worsted use #7 and for bulky use # 8-10.5 depending on the yarn.
    Optional: if you want a slightly tighter ribbing use one needle size down for the ribbing only.
Gauge: Dk (5.5 sts/inch), worsted (4.25 sts/inch) or bulky (3 sts/inch) weight yarn.
Abbreviations
  • CO: Cast On
  • Kf/b: Knit front and back of stitch (an increase)
  • K: Knit
  • P: Purl
  • YO; Yarn over
  • K2tog: Knit 2 stitches together (a decrease)
Directions (Note: numbers in parentheses are for bulky yarns)
  • CO 104(96)and join into circle.
  • work in K1, P1 ribbing for 1 to 1.5 inches
  • Increase row: *K3, kf/b* repeat around 1 time. 130 (120) stitches
  • Eyelet Pattern:
    **Knit in stockinette for 1"
    Purl 1 round
    Knit 1 round
    Next round: *k2tog, YO* repeat around if you have an odd stitch at the end just work it as K1, YO.
    Knit 1 round
    Purl 1 round**
  • **Repeat above instructions two more times.
  • Knit in stockinette for 1"
  • Shape Crown:
    Rnd 1: *K3, k2tog* repeat around. 104 (96) stitches
    Rnds 2-4: Knit
    Rnd 5: *K2, k2tog* repeat around. 78 (72) stitches
    Rnds 6-8: Knit
    Rnd 9: *K1, k2tog* repeat around. 52 (48) stitches
    Rnds 10-12: Knit
    Rnd 13: *k2tog* repeat around. 26 (24) stitches
    Rnds 14-15: Knit
    Rnd 16: *k2tog* repeat around. 13 (12) stitches
  • Cut working yarn and thread onto tapestry needle. Slip remaining stitches onto tail and draw up tightly. Weave in tails on wrong side.
  • You're done!
