June Lorna's Laces Limited Edition Colors - Royal Baby!
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

LLE Royal Baby Yarn

In 2010, with our April LLE color Royal Wedding, you showed us how mad about the Royals you were, so we couldn't resist creating a color (or two) in celebration of the next Royal Baby! Even though rumor has it this Royal Baby is a girl, we didn't want to assume anything and created two colors inspired by an old British poem: Sugar and Spice and Snips and Snails. Sugar and Spice is a dressed-up "girly" color, a little bit sweet but with a lot of sophistication. Snips and Snails is a quintessential "boy" color but with deeper teal hues, grayish browns and taupes. Each of these colors is a little bit regal, just as a Royal Baby color should be.

If you are as excited as we are for the birth of the next Royal Baby, you are welcome to join us for a little Royal Baby Knit-a-long (KAL) and Crochet-a-long (CAL)! We've designed an exclusive Royal Baby Blanket using the Royal Baby colors in Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted (3 skeins of each color, or 6 skeins total). Heather and Kristen will be leading the KAL/CAL by releasing a new knit and crochet square each week on the Jimmy Beans Wool Blog for six weeks starting July 1st to create a regal baby blanket. You can choose to knit or crochet all of your squares or include a little bit of both for a truly unique blanket! Feel free to check out the Jimmy Beans Wool Ravelry Group for more information.

Royal Baby in "Sugar and Spice" and "Snips and Snails" is available in all of your favorite Lorna's Laces yarns including: Lorna's newest yarn, Haymarket, Shepherd Sock, Shepherd Worsted, Shepherd Sport, Helen's Lace, Lion and Lamb, Honor, Solemate, and Sportmate!

Psst! If you'd rather "sew" your support for the Royal Baby madness, we are hosting a Sew-Along as well with an exclusive baby quilt pattern designed by our very own quilter extraordinaire-Gus! More about the SAL in next week's Fabric Newsletter!

      Super-Special Limited Edition Yarns!
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

We love the excitement of brand-new yarns here at Jimmy Beans - we're like kids at Christmas opening the packages from new shipments and exclaiming over the contents! Well, we recently received three well worth exclaiming over, and we think you'll flip for them, too! Just be sure to snag them before they're gone for good...

First up is Kookaburra from KFI; we're thrilled to be pre-releasing this fantastic new yarn in three gorgeous hand-dyed colorways exclusive to Jimmy Beans. A wonderfully balanced blend of merino wool, linen, and silk, this light fingering weight beauty is 600 yards of pure deliciousness! It has the softness and loft of a single-ply with a subtle sheen from the silk - one touch and we promise you won't care about Kookaburra sharing its gumdrops with you; you'll be too busy knitting! We think it would be wonderful for the lighter version of the Indigirl Cilantro wrap - just imagine all that silky goodness around your shoulders!

The next new yarn has certainly made a splash, which is fitting: it's Artyarns Silk Splash Light! You could call it Beaded Silk Light's sparkly sister; with the same yardage and gauge, it can easily be substituted in any pattern using Beaded Silk Light, especially if you want to increase your bling factor - Silk Splash Light has shimmering sequins spun right into the yarn along with the glass beads! Best of all, each skein of Silk Splash Light comes with a link to an exclusive free pattern for the Wildflowers Shawlette designed by Iris Schreier! And as an extra bonus, this yarn also comes in the coveted Wildflowers colorway, back for a limited time by popular demand!
Finally, while Madelinetosh Prairie Short Skeins aren't necessarily a new fixture at Jimmy Beans, we were excited to get a fresh shipment in that was chock full of the new Tosh colors, like Vishnu, Laurel, and Dr. Zhivago's Sky! Make sure you stock up fast - these beauties won't last long! And don't let the term "short" fool you; these special skeins lack only 50 yards from a normal skein, still giving you a generous 790 yards of single-ply lace goodness to work with!

New at JBW - Erika Knight Yarn!
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Erika Knight, a designer whose name you might recognize from her many designs for Rowan, has released her own line of British yarn - featuring exquisite 100% British wool yarns and gorgeous pattern support! Erika's name is synonymous with classic British style and her line of yarn emulates that perfectly. With four different yarns - Fur Wool, Vintage Wool, British Blue Wool, and Maxi Wool - the collection shines as a truly unique brand. Fur Wool, perhaps our shop favorite so far (both Leanne and Rachel have already completed projects with this yarn!), is a natural alternative to the fur trend that has been sweeping runways as of late. Vintage Wool and Maxi Wool are great basics in Aran and Bulky weights respectively. And British Blue Wool rounds out the collection as the superwash option, which is great for long-wearing and washable items. The entire collection sports a color palette that is soft, muted, and easy on the eyes - great for everything from baby items to adult apparel!
Along with these gorgeous yarns, there is a hefty collection of pattern support designed by Erika herself. Each of these patterns features a charming sketch that indicates what the knitted garment will look like, no doubt drawn by Erika herself. A range of items including basic sweaters, scarves, mittens (with fur cuffs) and hats can be found in this well-rounded selection. We love how accessible these designs are with options for a variety of knitting levels and skills. Some of our personal favorites include the Fur Gilet (check out Leanne's version on the project log!), the Zig Zag Snood and Mittens, the Fur Muffler, and the Cable Hat. We've also created kits for many of these designs in the collection, so check them out if you are looking for a fun new project using gorgeous British wool yarns!

Unisono - 1210
Unisono - 1210
$25.90
Are those marathon knitting sessions leaving your hands a little scratchy? Sometimes wool and other animal fibers can sap moisture from skin from repeated rubbing. That's why we couldn't wait to sink our fingers into new the Zitron Unisono and Unisono Solid yarns, made with a super-soft, ultra-fine merino wool infused with Aloe Vera and Jojoba oils to keep your hands as soft and silky as your yarn! And the same goes for your feet: Unisono is awesome for a pair of soft and cuddly socks! How about the Picot Ribbed Socks from Battle Born Knits?
Alegria - Carnaval
Alegria - Carnaval
$24.50
"Alegria" means "joy" in Spanish, and that perfectly describes our reaction to this yarn! Manos del Uruguay Alegria is easily one of the squishiest, softest sock yarns we've ever felt, amazingly cool to the touch and springy on the fingers. The addition of polyamide to the superwash merino wool makes this yarn extra durable and long-wearing, and the colors are just amazing - they certainly follow this season's trend toward brights!
Free-Spirit Shawls
Free-Spirit Shawls
$24.95
Interweave Knits editor (and former Knitscene editor) Lisa Shroyer has hit the nail on the head with her new book, Free-Spirit Shawls. With 20 eclectic designs from favorites like Romi Hill, Kate Gagnon Osborn, and Carol Feller, all grouped into four distinct categories (Color, Lace, Simplicity, and Texture), she has every taste covered! A special section on shawl-specific techniques like Shetland knitting and semi-circular construction make this a comprehensive guide to the world of small shawls, a trend that's enjoying an unprecedented wave of popularity. This book will have you excited to cast on for your next (or first!) neck-warming project!

      Zealana Yarns - Awesome Possum!
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Have you ever worked with possum fiber? We hadn't, but the second we tried Zealana's lovely yarns, we knew they'd be a hit! Zealana's possum blend yarns are actually helping with an issue that is currently plaguing the country of New Zealand. The common brushtail possum is an invasive species in New Zealand and wreaks environmental and ecological havoc on various animal habitats. As part of a program to alleviate the possum problem, Zealana is making use of the possum fur to create beautiful yarns for us and help the environment as well!
With a variety of weights to choose from you are sure to find something you'll love. For shawls and light scarves, be sure to check out the Air (see Sandy's hat in Air on the Project Log), Kiwi Lace and Fingering, or Rimu Fingering. For mid-weight sweaters, Rimu DK or Kauri Worsted are great choices. The tweedy Heron and bulky Tui are great for heavier sweaters, coats, and blankets. For even more pattern inspiration for these awesome possum yarns, be sure to check out Zealana's pattern booklets: Adventurous Zealana, Seasonless Zealana, and Zealana Air. Whichever possum-blend you choose, you are sure to be blown away with how soft and lovely these yarns truly are!

Kit of the Month: Casablanca Urban Lace Infinity Scarf
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

We've found the perfect summer accessory: the Urban Lace Infinity Scarf designed by Tanis Gray! It's light and lovely enough to grace your neck all summer long, and keep you stylish and warm right on into the fall. And Cascade Casablanca yarn, a softly spun blend of merino wool, silk, and mohair, is the perfect choice for the project: the long color runs create subtly changing beautiful stripes that seem to fade into one another. It's the perfect background for the old shale lace pattern, and best of all, you only need one skein! The color options range from bright jewel tones to muted neutrals, and they're all stunning.
Infinity Scarf
Several of the gals here at Jimmy Beans have made the scarf, and they all agree it is a flash to knit with minimal finishing - just graft together the short ends (or use a three-needle bind off, if you prefer), and you're done! A great choice if you're looking for an instant-gratification knit to finish in a weekend and wear to work on Monday!

      Meet a Bean - Terry!
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Terry
Terry is our resident knitting expert: She's a fixture in the retail shop where she helps countless customers and coordinates and teaches classes; she also answers your toughest knitting questions by email and over the phone. And then she writes a weekly blog and the "Terry's Tips" section of the newsletter, films Instructional Videos, and does many of our video reviews. With over 40 years of experience in the fiber arts, Terry has become a "Jill of All Trades"; she's done everything from raising sheep to processing and spinning their fleece to knitting exquisite lace shawls with the yarn! Born and raised in the Sierras, Terry taught herself to knit as a young Girl Scout, using a knitting book published in 1944.

The hobby quickly became an obsession which branched out to other crafts, including crochet, tatting, weaving, dyeing, basket-making, soap-making, herbology... The list goes on and on! At one point, she was the proud owner of a flock of 120 sheep, whose fleece she sheared, processed, and either spun or sold to spinners in her local fiber arts guild. She's also judged fleeces and handicrafts at the county fair!

It's hard to find Terry not doing something yarn- or knitting-related, but she has a multitude of other interests as well: She enjoys puzzles, word searches, and mysteries - mostly because she loves finding patterns in things (go figure!) - and also likes being out in nature. You can often find her in the woods camping, hiking, and backpacking around the gorgeous natural areas nearby. And while she's a fantastic teacher, Terry's also a perpetual student: she loves learning new things, and is always embarking on a new adventure. Right now she's practicing garment design, pattern writing, and technical editing. We can't wait to see what she gets into next!
