The Fibre Company and Kit of the Month!
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Please join us in welcoming The Fibre Company to the JBW family! We are so excited to be carrying three of their wonderful yarns: Terra, Road to China Light, and Acadia, not to mention a stunning array of patterns to accompany them. In 2008, the Fibre Company began as a partnership with Kate Gagnon-Osborn and Courtney Kelly of Kelbourne Woolens, and the popularity of their yarns sky-rocketed. With Kate and Courtney's stunning designs, the uniqueness of The Fibre Company's yarns shine through.

First up in the queue is Terra, a hardworking worsted weight yarn that is a lovely combination of baby alpaca, silk, and wool! It's shiny to the eye, incredibly soft to the touch, and has just a tad bit of tweedy flecks to keep things interesting! Both the Balsam Scarf and Stratum Hat pattern calls for this scrumptious yarn, but there's also a slew of free patterns available on Fibre Company's website which call for this yarn, like the ever popular Hiker's Waistcoat! Road to China Light is also a baby alpaca blend, but with added cashmere, camel, and silk fibers! This DK weight yarn is suitable for all sorts of projects that you might have in mind - anywhere from hats and gloves to cabled sweaters and afghans! Oh-so-soft and available in gorgeous colorways, you'll immediately fall in love as soon as this exquisite yarn lands in your hand! This yarn is also supported by fabulous Fibre Company patterns like the Bismark hat and glorious Mountain Ash Shawl. I also love the free patterns like the Alice Cowl. Crocheters - be sure to check out the crochet kit of the month: the Breda Cowl, now at 15% off! Like Terra, Acadia is another tweed-like fiber that's composed of Merino Wool, Baby Alpaca, and Silk. Available in thirteen stunning jewel-toned colors, Acadia is a delight to knit with and even more of a delight to wear against your skin! With 145 yards per skein, this DK weight fiber will be sure to look great as 1-2 skein accessories like the Avery Cowl, or in bigger projects like luscious sweaters and cozy pullovers!

The Fibre Company Terra Springtime Bandit Shawl
The Fibre Company Terra Springtime Bandit Shawl
Was $64.00
Now $51.20
(19% off!)

Of course, we loved this yarn so much that we want you to try it out! Which is exactly why we're offering up the Terra Springtime Bandit Shawl as October's Kit of the Month! Only using four skeins of The Fibre Company's lovely Terra yarn, you'll really enjoy knitting this shawl up! Several of our beans have already started on it! Of course, the fact that it's a free pattern doesn't hurt at all! This multi-seasonal piece is a great addition to your wardrobe for style and for warmth. You'll want to knit this again and again for yourself and for your friends!

As if this kit at 15% off couldn't get any better, we're also using this pattern as our knit-a-long, starting on October 26th! Kristen will be hosting once again (as she did for the Endless Possibilities KAL) and you can already go to Ravelry for pattern support and questions! She'll be posting her progress on a weekly Wednesday Blog starting October 26th! Check in now on our Ravelry page for more KAL details! Be sure to check out our interview with Kate and Courtney on our blog which will be posted this Wednesday! While you're at it, be on the lookout for our Springtime Bandit Kit giveaway starting October 19th!

      Wise Up with Wisdom Yarns
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

We know that you put a lot of effort into everything that you make but wouldn't it be great if the yarn you used could do some of the work for you? Wisdom Yarns, distributed by Universal Yarns, has an entire collection of fibers that work with you and your projects. With these self-striping yarns, you don't have to worry about selecting the right colors and switching skeins for splendid striping!

First up, the original Poems yarn is 100% single-ply wool loveliness. Pull out your needles (size US 9 through 11) and go to town on a hat, scarf, sweater, blanket...pretty much whatever you can think of! If you're having knitter's block on projects, I would recommend checking out the Poems Collection Book 1 and Volume II for a colorful selection of possibilities. I happen to love the Northern Lights Scarf and the Precious Gems Cardigan, each combining two different Poems colors for added effect. Or, for one-colorway wonders, try the Morning Mist Hoodie and the Agave Scarf. Don't get me started on the amazing afghan and shawl patterns! Crocheters - be sure to check out the gorgeous Millefiori Shawl! In music, a ballad is traditionally about in a romance between people. In yarn, Ballad is a romance of hues. Whether it's in the subtle shifts of purple tones or the broader, more prismatic blends, each colorway is an enchanting combination of variegated tones. This 100% superwash merino wool yarn has just a subtle hint of shine that brings out the magnificent colors. Want to see it knit up? Check out the Seafoam Scarf! Be warned, you may not be able to resist knitting one for yourself. Of course that's not a bad idea, considering the pattern is free from the Universal website!

As lovely as the original Poems, Poems Chunky contains the same 100% wool fibers and equally scrumptious colorways, just in a conveniently thicker weight! With some US size 9-11 needles, you'll finish your project in no time! Each ball contains 110 yards that will work up wonderfully whether you knit it, crochet it or felt it - that's right, felt your favorite color into even the simplest bag or hat pattern and prepare to be further wowed by the effects! Thought you've had your fill of Poems? Not so fast! Nothing accents these color combinations quite like the silky sheen of... well, silk. That's why Poems Silk has us oohing and ahhing. A blend of 75% wool and 25% silk, this worsted weight yarn takes all the wonder of the original Poems and adds luster. Grab a few balls and the Weekend Getaway Cardigan pattern (available for free from the Universal website!) and start knitting!

Not to complicate the choices or anything, but we still haven't gotten to our sock and lace knitters out there! Yep, Poems Sock is also available for your fingering-weight needs with a whooping 459 yards per skein of color-changing bliss! An exquisite blend of 75% superwash wool and a 25% touch of stretchy nylon, Poems Sock is more than just a sock yarn (although it does make incredibly cozy and warm socks!) - it's perfect for lacy shawls, delicate cardigans, and light fingerless mitts! Be sure to check out all of our kits using this wonderfully versatile yarn with links to free patterns on Universal's website!

Wool Watcher Oh, do have a Wool-Watcher treat for you! We'll be posting a few different skeins of all of these Wisdom Yarns you've seen today on Wool Watcher on Thursday, October 20th - all day long! Be sure to keep your computer on and your eye on Wool Watcher to nab some of these wonderful Poems yarns at low prices!

      Introducing Swans Island Yarns
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Swans Island
Swans Island
Shown in Worsted Beetroot.

Introducing Swans Island Yarns! This absolutely beautiful, hand-dyed, organic, and 100% merino wool yarn is some of the softest we've ever felt when knit up! Not to mention that every weight is available in ten gorgeous hand-dyed colorways that are completely natural. Swans Island started as a blanket weaving company, when ex-lawyers John and Carolyn Grace moved to tiny Swan's Island off the coast of Maine in search of a life that was more closely tied to the land. For 20 years they have produced these gorgeous and soft woven blankets and scarves from their 18th century farmhouse. In fact, one of their number one fans is the very own queen of craft, Martha Stewart!

With the success of their to-die-for blankets, the Graces decided to expand the Swans Island line of products to offer lovely hand-dyed yarns and a line of patterns to accompany them! The yarns arrive in three different weights: Fingering, Worsted, and Bulky and each weight is incredibly soft and available in a variety of colors. We are so excited to be able to offer ten of our favorite colors in our shop! In fact, I'm planning to buy enough of the Worsted in Sky Blue to make the lovely Hollyhock pattern by Winged Knits. The Swans Island will surely make this the softest garment in my wardrobe - not to mention the warmest - I can't wait to cast on! Of course, Swans Island has a beautiful arrangement of their own designs to support their yarn which should be arriving to our store very soon - so be sure to stay tuned!

      Riveting Yarns from Kollage
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

If you've ever had a favorite pair of blue jeans, you'll understand why we love the latest yarns from Kollage so much (yep - the same Kollage that brings you your favorite square needles! Riveting (fingering weight) and Riveting Worsted are both 95% cotton yarns, just like your comfy old pair of jeans reincarnated in their second life. Durable and machine-washable jeans you can knit with? What a great idea! Especially for all of you eco-conscious knitters out there since this yarn is made up of 80% post consumer content! That means you're getting fantastic yarn and supporting fiber recycling efforts, making this yarn great for knitting/crocheting AND good for your conscience! What's new yarn without impressive pattern support? For the fingering weight Riveting yarn, we have the My Kind of Saturday cowl, a quick and adorable gift idea! If you have a little more time to commit, you'll want to check out the Tabitha Tank and the Day at the Beach Pullover; each show off the cool faded jean effect of this yarn. The Riveting Worsted patterns are equally classy and fashionable. Try the At the Lake Pullover for those chilly mornings and evenings, or the so cute Barn Dance Skirt - available in children and adult sizes. You'll love the unique draping effects of the recycled jeans material and with all the yardage (350 for Riveting and 163 for Riveting Worsted) you'll have plenty to work with!

Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Here's a tiny sampling of our handiwork this month!! Click on any of the thumbnails to take a closer look or check out all of our projects!

Nicole's Ann Norling Cowl
Nicole's Ann Norling Cowl
When the new Lorna's Limited Edition color "That's How We Roll" came out, Nicole snagged a skein in Shepherd Worsted and started working on the Ann Norling Easy Cowl to keep her warm for the marathon later this month. The pattern is quick and simple, so she'll be able to finish it in time and this soft and vibrant yarn will keep her warm and running strong!
Tutu Scarves
Tutu Scarves
One of our favorite customers, Linda, came in to show off the ruffle scarves she's making as gifts! She used a few different colors of Crystal Palace's ruffle yarn, Tutu. She had a great time knitting these up on size 9 needles. Thanks for sharing, Linda!
Sharon's Chunky Cowl
Sharon's Chunky Cowl
We all adore Noro yarns so of course we almost died when we received their latest yarn, Hitsuji in the shop. Basically the bulky weight version of Kureyon, Hitsuji is a rough and tumble kind of yarn, perfect for quick knits that need to be warm and cozy. Sharon grabbed one ball and found a free pattern on Ravelry called the Dolores Park Cowl. Of course, using a US 13 needle, she finished in only one evenings worth of marathon knitting! She loves the color, how it feels against her skin, and the unevenness that can occur - she says it's more unique that way!
Leanne's Improv Scarf
Leanne's Improv Scarf
How gorgeous and fun is this ruffle scarf made out of Trendsetter's Improv in Lilac and Lavender? Ever since Leanne cast on her first ruffle scarf, she's been literally hooked. Of course, as soon as Improv came into our shop - she was bowled over with excitement and cast on immediately. The next day she came into the shop with this lovely scarf. Shevawn went ahead and modeled it for all of you!
Spud & Chloe Seeing Stars Blanket
Spud & Chloe Seeing Stars Blanket
Thanks to the folks at Spud & Chloe, we had the opportunity to borrow this gorgeous blanket for a while. With 17 colors of Spud & Chloe Sweater, the color combinations really wowed us! It was so warm and cozy, Kristen couldn't resist wrapping herself up in it! The Seeing Stars Blanket pattern also comes in smaller sizes, using 2 hanks of each color rather than 4, in case this enormous one seems daunting to you.
Amber's Saartjes Booties
Amber's Saartjes Booties
Amber made these oh-so-cute Saartjes Booties with a loafer modification for a friend's baby boy, to be born early next year. This is the second project she has made with this great and easy to modify pattern. This pattern is a quick knit and customizable to work for any little one. For these booties, she used two different colors of Madelinetosh's Tosh Vintage which turned out to be perfect for this project!
Berroco Peruvia Quick Lace and Cables Capelet
Berroco Peruvia Quick Lace and Cables Capelet
Here's a perfect example of just how gorgeous our current Project Pack can turn out. Knit with 6 hanks of Peruvia Quick, this capelet is that extra layer you wish you had on cold days. The collar and cables add warmth and lovely texture. Oh, did I mention the pattern is free?
Shevawn's Cable & Lace Blanket
Shevawn's Cable & Lace Blanket
Shevawn is speed-knitting this piece up for her soon to be sister-in-law. She chose Cascade's latest 60 Quick Baby Knits book since there's loads of cute baby projects to knit from. She decided to substitute Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted since the color Chino would go with the colors the couple chose for the nursery - the color is actually a lot lighter in person. Plus, it's machine washable and oh so soft! This is her first cable project, so it's great practice! The baby is due in a month, Shevawn! You better get knitting!
Ann Norling Cowl in Tosh Merino DK
Ann Norling Cowl in Tosh Merino DK
We love trunk shows and we love Tosh, so this Easy Cowl really caught our attention. The classy tonal variety of colors like the Tosh Merino DK in Tern enhance the textured effect of this lovely beginner's cowl.
Sandy's Cat's Eye Tam
Sandy's Cat's Eye Tam
At first touch, Isager Wool 1 is not the softest yarn in the bunch. I couldn't understand, then, why Sandy loves it so much. Turns out once you knit it up and block it, this yarn softens right up! This lightweight Cat's Eye Tam puts it to great use with the airy pattern and the cute XO Fair Isle brim. This project would be a great way to test your hand at the art of Fair Isle, since the band around the brim is the only part requiring the skill!
Jeanne's Transition Gloves
Jeanne's Transition Gloves
Jeanne's Transition Gloves knit out of Shibui Sock are finished! Don't they look just amazing? Jeanne has been wearing them nonstop ever since these got off her hands and says this is a great project for the knitter wanting to dip her hands into fair-isle - it's easy!

      Beans for Brains Scholarship Update
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

We need YOU - to make our 2012 Beans for Brains Scholarship happen!! Jimmy Beans Wool is so excited to be announcing the 2012 Beans for Brains Scholarship Awards! We've got an exciting plan to share with you for the 2012 awards, so we hope you will help.

We first wanted to say thank you again to all of our sponsors from last year! Because of their efforts, we were able to give out $18,000 to our 6 amazing scholarship winners. As the school season is starting up again, we want to get started on the 2012 program. Last year, we reached out to vendors in the industry to get donations, but we heard from so many of you that you also wanted to donate! So, of course, we listened. Here's our new plan:

This year, we have ten major sponsors that will be matching public donations to the Beans for Brains scholarship fund. For the month of November, Jimmy Beans Wool will be accepting donations online and in our retail store with the targeted goal of raising $10,000 from all of YOU! Each of our sponsors will match the amount raised up to $1,000 for a grand total of $20,000 combined. From November 1st through November 30th, please visit our Beans for Brains Scholarship page and donate (and be sure to send your family and friends, too!). If every one of our customers gave $1, we'd be well over our goal in no time!!

In January, we will announce the total amount raised and share a timeline for when we will start accepting applications for the 2012-2013 school year.
