       Amber's Trip to Lorna's Laces...
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Last weekend Amber went to Chicago ... and here's her story!

Last weekend I went to Chicago for a little vacation where I got to spend a whole day working at Lorna's Laces. Amanda, who is the manager of LL, put my friend and me up at her adorable apartment in the city and took me to work with her on Friday. We arrived about 9 am and were greeted by Beth (the owner of LL) and her Great Dane Pearl (yes, the yarn is named after her). Pearl
the Lornas Laces parking lot My day started off with a nice tour of LL led by Amanda where I asked a million questions. I met about half of the regular LL staff who were more than happy to answer my second million silly questions. A typical day at LL consists of 2 dyers, 3 people who wind, label and organize the yarn, Amanda, Beth and Pearl (who mostly just wanders around looking cute). They dye about 20 different yarns including Roving and Buffalo Gold's Bison yarn (which is amazing by the way).
There are PVC pipes hanging EVERYWHERE for drying yarn, about 4 Dye Tables, some tables used for labeling and boxes and boxes of natural (un-dyed yarn). While wandering around looking at and touching EVERYTHING I came across the stamps for our Limited Edition colors, past and future. I spotted one very special to me because it was for a color I had tried to design for this past October and then ran out of time. I come to find out that one of my tasks for the day is to work with Amanda to dye that special color. How excited was I?! So it was off to look through the custom color book to try to explain to Amanda my vision. Since I am not very good at explaining things this took a little longer than Amanda probably expected. After we had a rough idea it was off to the dye tables to mix some colors. We tried about 4 different greens before we nailed it, and boy did we nail it! drying yarn

(Amanda from Lorna's Laces)
The other colors were easy and we got dying. The finished product is exactly what I wanted and I would love to tell you what colors it is and the story behind it, but you are just going to have to wait a few months til it comes out... You can read the rest on our blog...

Now: $43.20 w/pattern

Now that we have a kid in the house, the one thing we can't have enough of are blankets... Of course, we used a ton of blankets long before Huck came along - if there was a blanket in the house, Wiley and Buddy would find it and lay on it. And it doesn't always have to be a legitimate blanket for them to like it. Just last night in fact, we had opened up a new memory foam mattress topper and left the temporary fabric cover shoved into the corner of the bedroom. When i woke up this morning, what did I see but Wiley curled up in the corner on top of that cover... sound asleep and comfortable, as if that cheap little cover was made from cashmere. ha! Anyway, in honor of the usefulness of blankets for kids and dogs, we're making a blanket from one of our favorite yarns (a yarn - Muench Family yarn - that is super easy to care for, priced really well, and comes in A TON of colors) the kit of the month. You can't beat $43.20 for a cozy 28" x 30" finished product!

Free Pattern - Terry's Easy Slouch Hat

Slouch Hat
Slouch Hat Pattern
Terry has been using this hat pattern to teach her beginning circular knitting students... It's a great way to practice decreasing, yarn-overs, and knitting in the round. We hope you enjoy it as much as Terry's students have! She used 2 hanks of Lorna's Laces Swirl DK in the Sugar Plum for her hat, but there are still lots of other colors to chose from.

      Last Minute Gift Ideas...
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

The holiday season is quickly approaching (how many days left? Less than 7? Time has never flown by so quickly for this knitter... I guess that's what having a baby and a business will do to you? I still haven't made any plans for our Christmas dinner, nor gotten a tree, and have just barely shopped for gifts for Doug, the dogs, and Hucklebaby. I know it's a bit premature, but I'm really looking forward to next Christmas, as I just know that i'll be better prepared then! If you're at all like me this year, you might need a few last minute items to fill up the stockings - or to exchange with friends at the holiday party (ours was last night - we're going to an Asian Show-Cooking restaurant and then to a Kung Fu show. I'm so excited!!). Here are a few of the items that have been popular this season:

Here's a sampling of our handiwork this month... !!

Jeanne's Footprint
Jeanne's Footprint
I decided to dive into Cat Bordhi's new book Personal Footprints for Insouciant sock knitters, wow!! I am having so much fun and what a cool way to knit socks, which of course I am obsessed with. You trace your foot, or whoever you want to knit the sock for and then customize the sock as you knit. I love this project and decided to use one of my balls of Noro Kureyon Sock yarn in color 233.
Hand Maiden Casbah Socks
Hand Maiden Casbah Socks
When we got the Hand Maiden Casbah yarn in I had to dive in feet first and do my second personal footprint! This yarn is amazing and I decided to knit up a pair of special socks for myself. I am such a greedy knitter and this yarn was just what I needed. With it's blend of super wash merino, nylon and cashmere how could I go wrong. I chose the Banded Rib from Barbara Walkers first book A Treasury of Knitting Patterns and modified it a bit to give me the look I wanted. I used the magic loop so I would have to wait to knit my second sock and could wear them right away. I used a picot hem for the top and am completely in love with these socks!
Huck's Crocheted Beanie
Huck's Crocheted Beanie
I've started crocheting again and am loving it!! Using 3 colors of the Lana Grossa Meringo and the Blue Sky Alpacas Men's Beanie pattern (i just stopped increasing on row 10), I'm almost done. I love the fact that I can just pick up and go - and that i don't have to think too hard about what i'm doing. I'm still figuring out how to do the color changes invisibly - and will be making a bunch more of these.
Huck's Kureyon Sweater
Huck's Kureyon Sweater
ITS FINISHED!! This top down sweater is a breeze and perfect for the mom - me! - that has no time to think about fancy stitches or complicated patterns. I knit the 12 month size, but the photo shows Huck at 6 months old - he's a big kid! The other photo shows Huck, Wiley, and the unfinished sweater at 3 months old. I just barely had to open the 3rd ball of yarn - only needed it for 1/3rd of the 2nd sleeve - so i'm trying to figure out what to do with the rest of that ball. And yes, I did block his sweater in the shower the other day... i've discovered that baby clothes are just small enough that it's almost as easy to wash them by hand as it is to wash them in the machine!
Alice's Gnocchi Scarf
Alice's Gnocchi Scarf
When the Lana Grossa Gnocchi yarn came in we couldn't hold Victoria back and she took home 2 balls to work up this great scarf for her daughter Alice. Isn't Alice sweet? If you want a bigger scarf use 4 balls and follow the pattern that is on the label and voila you have a super soft cozy scarf.
Simplest Baby Jacket
Simplest Baby Jacket
This charming little baby jacket can be knit or crocheted and uses only 2-3 hanks 300-450 yards of the Lorna's Laces Swirl DK yarn. The pattern is sized from newborn up to 6 months and is the perfect quick project for that baby shower you were just invited too.
Chunky Half Zip Cardigan
Chunky Half Zip Cardigan
This fabulous sweater knit out Lorna's Laces Chunky Swirl yarn is one that will become a staple in your wardrobe for a long time. The pattern ranges from sizes 38-50 bust and uses 10-13 hanks of this lovely yarn. We will be getting the pattern soon!
