Knitting a Top Down Sweater

I was chatting with my friend Diane the other day and learned that she has put an entire 'how to knit a top down sweater' tutorial on her website. It's no secret that i am a huge fan of her patterns - and use them whenever possible. If you've never tried a top-down sweater, now is your chance. By following the INCREDIBLE knitting a top down sweater instructions, you'll learn just how simple the technique is - and i can almost guarantee that you'll be hooked! Just so you know, here are a few of my favorites:

So, even if you aren't going to use one of her patterns, make sure to check out the tutorial she so carefully put together. It's loaded with photos - and you won't regret it!

P.S. Yes, you probably noticed that i have suggested that you read Diane's article instead of one that i wrote. I apologize - this month has been absolutely crazy. With the CNN video, traveling back east, going to Austin in a few days for my brother's graduation, and a major trade show in a week, I have barely had time to do anything (you can read more on our blog). But I promise that there will be a wonderfully educational article next month! I'm planning on writing about Buttonholes :)

Kit of the Month

Every month we feature a new yarn + pattern combination at a special kit-of-the-month discount...

Just in time for Election Year (and Patriotic 4th of July) - Your Politically Correct Hat at 20% Off! Inspired by some of Allison's students who leaned in one direction and their spouses in the other, she thought it might be a fine idea for these couples to wear the hats to let the world know just where each of them stand!

Techniques used: Fair Isle, duplicate stitch. Finished circumference: 19" women's, 21 1/2" men's. US 8 - 16" circular needle and size 8 double pointed needle required, not included in the kit.

Note: these hats were featured in our CNN interview - you can bet you'll be seeing them knit all over the country! The pattern has instructions for both parties, and Allison promises to create Green and Independent versions if there is enough interest.

Limited Edition Color - Arriving May 1st

The June Lorna's Laces Limited Edition color will be available on June 1st (just a few days away)! The color is called Blueberry Snowcone because it reminds us of, well, summer snowcones! To be honest, i wanted to name it Blackberry Snowcone since it has so much purple in it (it has purple, periwinkle, bright blue and charcoal), but we figured that might be confusing since Lorna's already has a Blackberry color. Either way, the color is gorgeous and i'm excited to use it for this little sundress or maybe a baby sweater set. Then i'll just have to find a little kid to give it to!

Just a reminder, you can grab some of the Snowcone on June 1st in any of 3 weights: Shepherd Worsted, Shepherd Sock, or the Lion and Lamb.

And if you can't remember what the previous colors looked like, no fear!! We've put together a Lorna's Laces Limited Edition Color page for reminiscing. :)

Turning Scarves into Throws : Months 7 and 8

I'm so sorry! We had a bit of mixup with our scheduling and don't have the next scarf pattern ready for public consumption. However, next month we'll be giving you TWO patterns! I can tell you that the next colors will be Glenwood and Sage.

In the meantime, maybe take the next week or two to sew together some of the ones that you have knit so far. I have finally figured out what the order of the colors will be and have sewn 4 of them together - I am falling in love with sewing things together - and I think you'll be tickled to see how gorgeously these scarves come together as one. That said, here's a photo of Buddy keeping warm with the following (from top to bottom):

P.S. If you're just starting, you can find more information on our Scarves to Throws Project on our website (as well as an explanation for what we're doing).

Blog Update

Speaking of Scarves to Throws, I thought i'd let you guys know that the JBW Blog is still up and running. I've been a blogging fool! I'm still not sure if i'm doing it correctly or not - (e.g., am i supposed to reply to comments posted on the blog? seems weird not to...) - but i've been having fun. Our goal is still to get the other girls in the shop involved (so you can see what we're all up to), but for the time being, you'll just have to read about my life... about the 4 days of snow we received this Memorial Day weekend, about my recent trip to the Hershey Factory, about having Ann Norling over to my house, and about how I almost lost $1300! I've also been trying to post plenty of photos (that's what made me think of the Scarves to Throws) - so, if you have some time to kill, check it out! I'd love to get your thoughts.

P.S. On the blog, i'll be posting the link to the CNN.com interview we did last week. They called on Friday, flew out on Tuesday, and the video should be posted on their site on May 28th. So exciting!!!

By the way, if you're ever interested in adding our logo to your blog (but aren't sure how), you can find instructions on our links page. If you have an account, and a new customer tells us that they found out about us because of you, you'll get 15% off of your next purchase!

Team Jimmy Beans - Meet Victoria

victoria
Employee of the Month :: Victoria

During the craziness of this past winter, we found that we desperately needed the help of an expert knitter with superb computer skills. Enter Victoria!! A brilliant mind - an ever better knitter (she is originally from England) - and a recent emigrant to Nevada - we really lucked out when she joined our team. In addition to helping pull and ship packages, she is almost solely responsible for physically reorganizing our shipping space (and adding kits to the website).

Book Review: Fitted Knits

Fitted Knits

We've been checking out a bunch of new knitting books lately - and thought you might be interested in reading our impressions! This months' review was written by Victoria (that's her above):

Although Stephanie Japel has been creating knitted designs for several years, Fitted Knits is her first book. Published by F&W Publications, this gem contains 25 of her designs. I love this book - a lot of the designs are knit in the round from the neck down, for a clean look and minimal seaming.

What I really like is the way Stephanie creates visual interest in a garment through simple techniques, such as very deep ribbing to emphasize the waist or length of arm, or the use of reverse stockinette to produce strategic banding. Stephanie will often use a different stitch pattern to create shaping without having to increase or decrease - very clever. I love patterns that look great and are not complicated to knit!

Her work looks tailored and elegant and even with very feminine garments, there is a lack of fussiness. In addition to all of the great design strengths is her bold use of color - lots of solid color, pink, purple, yellow, blue, green - it makes for striking knitwear. I love it!

Thumbs up for Fitted Knits, I can't wait for Stephanie's next book, due in Fall 2008! And here are some of my favorite summer projects from the book:

Super Sale :: Rowan, Regia, Nashua and Crystal Palace

You might have heard that we recently received over 65 boxes of Rowan, Nashua, Regia, and and Crystal Palace Sale Yarns. Almost everything is 40-50% off and will stay at those prices until we sell out. Perhaps most exciting, though, is that Rowan unearthed another batch of mis-labeled Cashsoft 4Ply and Cashsoft DK.... 2 of our favorite yarns of all time.

There is simply not enough room to show every single yarn we've got on sale now, so i've just listed a few of my favorites here. Take advantage of the discontinued colors/yarns - and stock up for winter (or get going on some socks for summer)!

Here are my favorite Regia sale colors... Use 2 hanks for a pair of socks -

Regia Sock
Crazy Roma
$3.96 per ball

Blues and tans, this color will be perfect for Doug's dad. If i start now, i can probably finish a pair by December, 2009!

Regia Sock
Nation Red/White
$3.96 per ball

Big bold stripes of Red and White... As a former NCSU college student, this is the perfect color for wearing when i go back home to NC.

Regia Sock
Mineral
$3.96 per ball

Since chocolate brown is my favorite color, I'm also a little partial to tones in the tan family. I can picture using this color for something bigger than socks - a sweater? or vest? Or maybe some fingerless gloves??!!

Regia Sock
Jazz (Cotton)
$4.48 per ball

Yum! This color reminds me of strawberries and kiwi and limes... And with an even split between cotton and wool, it's perfect for little summer projects.

And here are a few other yarns that you might want to stock up on... (we sure are!):
